Materials and methods: A questionnaire with 9 statements was presented to 54 dental and medical students. The responses were converted to a numerical scale for analysis. Using a Mann-Whitney U test, differences between students from both faculties were evaluated. Results: The students showed a good opinion of the importance of basic sciences in clinical practice. It was also observed that the proportion of dental students who consider that basic research is not useful for their clinical practice is higher. Conclusion: Students consider the basic sciences necessary for good professional performance.

Résumé

For more than a century the training of medical professionals has been organized according to the Flexnerian model, which comprises three cycles: basic, clinical and clerkship. On the other hand, the accelerated development of biomedical sciences modified the competences of the first cycle. Additionally, new skills required for medical practice, such as teamwork and innovation as a tool to solve health problems, challenged in recent years the classic paradigm of medical education. Therefore, the medical schools have developed multiple strategies to deal with it, such as curricular integration using competency-based education models, incorporating basic and clinical sciences in parallel during the curriculum, ensuring a relevant and applicable scientific knowledge throughout the training process. Although in Chile the Flexner prototype is still followed, the basic sciences are taught as single or integrated courses or using a systems approach. In this article we report a diagnosis about the local integration of fundamental sciences in medical training. We also compare our schools with those of Canada, Europe and Latin America. Recommendations aimed at modernizing medical school curricula are made.

Résumé

Abstract The aim of the present study is to understand the constitution of kinanthropometry as scientific disciplinary field in the 1970s in Brazil. Therefore, a bibliographic review was carried out in nine databases and in a specific journal focused on publications from the Kinanthopometry perspective, since this is an element to legitimize a scientific discipline. Only two studies dealing with this topic were selected. Given such a gap in the literature, three interviews with professors who organized the Physical Education (PE) course laboratories, as well as a newspaper report from the period, were used in the study. Different names have been associated with the scientific field of human composition assessment throughout history, as well as formulating different body perceptions, such as Biometrics, Anthropometry and kinanthropometry. Each of these factors determine relationships with the involved socio-cultural context. Such a complexity to understand a conjecture within a historical time expands the space available for analyses. In the 1960s, the term kinanthropometry emerged in foreign countries as a new way of interpreting human body composition assessments linked to knowledge in the PE field based on movement and anatomy. This term was imported by Brazilian researchers after their contact with scientists in USA and Canada, since it offered the possibility of acquiring new representations for research in the PE field back in the 1970s.
