Objective@#To explore the risk factors associated with depression in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with erectile dysfunction (DMED).@*Methods@#A total of 60 male DMED patients in Kangning Hospital Affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University were enrolled. They were divided into group A (DMED with depression, 40 cases) and group B (DMED without depression, 20 cases) according to the results of self-rating depression scale (SDS). The comorbidity rate of DMED and depression was calculated.Baseline index, blood glucose control index, sex hormone index and blood lipid biochemical index were compared between the two groups.Pearson correlation analysis was used to judge the correlation between SDS scale scores and the indicators. Finally, these indicators were substituted into logistic regression analysis to find out the factors that may cause the comorbidity of DMED and depression.@*Results@#The age of the patients in group A was older than that in group B[(55.95±6.33)years vs.(44.15±5.08)years, t=7.242, P=0.000], the course of T2DM in group A was longer than that in group B [(10.28±0.94)years vs.(4.38±0.60)years, t=29.467, P=0.000]. The fast plasma glucose (FPG)[(10.24±1.55)mmol/L vs.(8.22±1.15)mmol/L, t=5.153, P=0.000], fasting insulin (FIns) [(21.34±2.58)mU/L vs.(17.35±2.13)mU/L, t=5.967, P=0.000] and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) [(8.75±1.05)% vs.(6.55±0.84)%, t=8.146, P=0.000] in group A were higher than those in group B. Testosterone (TT) level in group A was lower than that in group B [(1.89±0.24)ng/mL vs.(2.46±0.31)ng/mL, t=-7.855, P=0.000]. The luteinizing hormone (LH) [(12.95±1.14)U/L vs.(8.53±0.70)U/L, t=18.515, P=0.000] and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) [(19.55±1.83)U/L vs.(15.40±1.47)U/L, t=8.808, P=0.000] in group A were higher than those in group B. Pearson analysis showed that the SDS scale score was positively correlated with age, T2DM duration, FPG, Fins, HbAlc, LH, FSH (r=0.310, 0.503, 0.465, 0.583, 0.676, 0.355, 0.540, P=0.002, 0.008, 0.017, 0.022, 0.030, 0.026, 0.011), and negatively correlated with TT level (r=-0.713, P=0.028). Logistic regression analysis showed that the age, the course of T2DM and TT were the independent risk factors which caused the comorbidity of DMED and depression.@*Conclusion@#In male T2DM patients, the independent risk factors for DMED with depression are age, long duration, and low TT level.

OBJECTIVES: In the treatment of schizophrenia, treatment compliance is an important prognostic factor. As insight has a significant impact on treatment compliance, an appropriate assessment of insight is essential in the treatment of schizophrenia. This study examined the reliability and validity of the Korean version of Birchwood Insight Scale (BIS). METHODS: Fifty seven adult patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-5 were recruited from a university hospital. They were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), The Scale to Assessment Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD) and BIS. Explorative factor analysis was performed to examine the construct validity of the Korean version of BIS. Concurrent validity was evaluated by a comparison with the PANSS G12 item and SUMD. The test-retest correlation was evaluated to examine the test-retest reliability. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the variables affecting insight. RESULTS: Explorative factor analysis showed that the Korean version of BIS was composed of 2 factors, which are ‘Awareness of symptoms’ and ‘Awareness of illness and need for treatment.’ The Korean version of BIS was reliable in terms of the internal consistency. Concurrent validity with the PANSS G 12 item and SUMD was statistically significant. The test-retest reliability was also statistically significant. Multiple regression analysis showed that the PANSS negative factor affects the BIS score, indicating that negative symptoms of schizophrenia may impair insight of the illness. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the Korean version of BIS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the insight of patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to analyze the sociodemographic characteristics of participants in '1998 Korean Depression Screening Day' and to evaluate the results of the screening test. METHODS: By using the survey results of 619 volunteers from 8 hospitals, the authors examined the prevalence of depression detected at the screening test and sociodemographic characteristics and the psychiatric treatment history of respondents. The assessment measure was the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. RESULTS: The mean depression score of all participants was 57.5+/-13.8 and it came under mild depression. Of all participants, 69.5% (N=430)had at least mild depressive symptoms, 43.1% (N=267)had at least moderate symptoms, and 18.4% (N=114)had severe symptoms. Never have 56.8% of respondents in the severely depressed range and 63.9% of those in the moderately depressed range had psychiatric treatment. The results suggest that the age group of 29-year-old or younger (relative to 60-year-old or older group)and full-time employment status (relative to unemployment)are protective factors of depression. CONCLUSIONS: By '1998 Korean Depression Screening Day', many depressed patients were detected and their depressive symptoms had statistically significant relationships with some sociodemographic characteristics. The results suggest that the education and screening test programs for depressive illness facilitated by Depression Screening Day are useful to the patients regardless of being under current treatment or not.
