Résumé

We organized regular, student-led activities in which medical students listened to patients' narratives and engaged in casual conversation. This report reviews these activities, which were conducted 28 times between June 2020 and September 2022. Through the activities, we received feedback on feelings, new perspectives, and realizations that arose from both students and patients. Our findings suggest that listening to patients' narratives helped students self-reflect and understand the patients' perspectives. Moreover, interacting with students helped patients feel a sense of meaning and a new understanding of their illness.

Résumé

Private self-consciousness is a relevant metacognitive capacity in the self-regulation process, with possible implications in alcohol consumption. This research verified the influence of self-reflection and insight, dimensions of private self-consciousness, on drinking behavior. A total of 523 Brazilians, aged from 20 to 39 years old, participated in a survey by answering the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale and the AUDIT test. The results showed that women have higher levels of self-reflection, whereas men have higher levels of insight. With regard to alcohol consumption, young people drink at higher risk levels than adults. Self-reflection and insight were negatively correlated with alcohol consumption. Age and gender differences in the intensity of the correlation between variables and the influence of environmental factors on the regulation of drinking behavior are discussed. (AU)

(AU)

Résumé

Recently, unprofessional behavior by physicians and misconduct by medical students have led to increased public concern over medical professionalism. Many studies have been conducted to explore strategies that reinforce professionalism education and prevent misconduct in medical students. However, most studies focused on defining the medical professionalism and its conceptual components. In this study, we conducted a conceptual analysis based on the literature review to categorize issues of unprofessional behavior, and identified doctors' indifference to self and others as the reason for the unprofessional behavior. In this regard, self-reflection provides a practical tool to overcome such indifference. We suggest ‘education and evaluation based on self-reflection and reflective practices’ as the effective strategies to enhance the professionalism in medical students.

Research about self has involved the use of scales in measuring their dimensions and relationships with cognition and behaviour. Among those is the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS), developed to measure the private dimension of self-consciousness. As metacognitive components, self-reflection and insight would be involved in the process of reflecting on one's own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, evaluating and modifying them in order to self-regulate. This systematic review sought to understand the relationship between self-reflection and insight into cognition and behaviour through the analysis of empirical studies that used SRIS, published between 2002 and 2017, and retrieved from Periódicos CAPES Portal, by using the words "self-consciousness", "self-awareness", "self-reflection", "SRIS", their equivalents in Portuguese, and "insight". Results pointed out an association between insight and healthy reactions but diverged on the self-reflection benefits. This relationship and the aspects that influence it are discussed.

Overweight has become one of the most important health problems in the last hundred years, not only owing to the deterioration in quality of life of the persons suffering from it, but also because of its relation to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Development. Most treatments are oriented towards maintaining a balance between intake (diet) and expenditure of energy (physical activity), whereas psychological, and to a lesser degree, socio-demographic, factors do not receive they attention they deserve for their role in the etiology and development of this health problem. Objective. To analyze and reflect, based on the most recent scientific literature, about the need to educate and train individuals in two central process that induce weight loss: self-reflection and volition, very closely related to correct psychological development. Conclusions. Focusing on volitional and self-reflexive aspects of behavior in persons who are overweight could improve the effectiveness of treatment owing to the close relation between motivation ("wanting to lose weight") and self-concept ("one's image of oneself"), processes that have been shown to be important in weight reduction.

Résumé

PURPOSE: To examine the results of PBL classes for sophomore nursing students during one semester. METHOD: Self-reflection journals and class evaluation questionnaires were collected from 121 nursing students and analyzed. Results of class evaluation questionnaires were analyzed using mean scores, SD, frequencies and percentages. Significant statements were derived by repeated review of the self-reflection journals by the researchers. RESULTS: The statements, 'Understanding of PBL', 'Improvement of human relationships', 'Expansion of nursing knowledge', 'Excellency in nursing class and application of nursing skills in nursing practices' and 'Improvement of learning ability and attitude during classes' were derived from the self-reflection journals. Analysis of class evaluation questionnaires showed the following scores: prerequisite of PBL (3.0/4), role of facilitator (3.48/4) and satisfaction with PBL learning (3.31/4). Also some complaints such as lack of adequate references in the library, and confusion in at the beginning of PBL were noted. CONCLUSION: PBL was effective. Using the results of the study for planning a more effective PBL class syllabus is recommended.
