Résumé

Cotton is the most important global cash crop which controls economy of many nations. Global sustainability of cotton yield is one of the major challenges for meeting impending threats under climate change. Though India is one among the leading countries in cotton production, the supply is not enough considering the increasing demand. Scientists across the Globe are indulged in developing new lines and cultures with capacity to produce more yields. In this context, here, we have made an attempt to study the growth, physiology, and yield traits of cotton culture - TCH 1819 before its release (now released in the name of CO 17) by different chemical treatments. Observation on the leaf gas exchange traits, leaf parenchymal cells distinguished the source sink relationship of the culture. Chemical manipulation by growth retardants reduced the gibberellins content and modified the foliage structure. By characterizing the physiological potential through manipulation by growth retardant (Mepiquat chloride (0.015 %)) increased the yield by 30%. The traits identified in this study are potential indicators in breeding programme before releasing the variety.

Résumé

The rapeseed mustard is one of the most important sources of edible oil in India and contributes 28.6% in total oilseed production. The mustard growing areas in India are experiencing the vast diversity in the agro climatic conditions. Here, we studied forty-nine advanced breeding lines of Brassica juncea L. for two consecutive years (2016-18) to examine the variations in the remobilization of assimilates from flowering to maturity stage and their contribution to seed filling under stressed environment. Further, we investigated the impact of high temperature on dry matter accumulation and partitioning from source to sink in Brassica germplasm. The synchronization between the seed filling stage and the onset of heat spell is critical event that determines the overall yield. Imbalances caused due to miss-matching of above events created hindrance in source-sink translocation, thus resulted in yield losses. Amount of remobilized dry matter, remobilization efficiency and remobilization percentage increased significantly, while the dry matter accumulation, total carbohydrates content and seed yield per plant declined in the late sown genotypes during both crop seasons. Reduced accumulation of photo assimilates under stress and higher sink demand resulted in more number of shriveled seeds leading to yield depression. The higher remobilization efficiency in late sown genotypes was strongly associated with dry matter at flowering that consequently tended to affect the final seed weight. This study will provide insights for better understanding of source-sink relationships in Indian mustard under heat stress and the differential remobilization efficiencies in the advanced breeding lines.

Abstract The tropical dry forest is a typical lowland ecosystem that is threatened by a strong seasonality and anthropogenic pressures, which can affect the forest composition and structure. The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of two agricultural matrices on the floristic composition and carbon storage in riparian forests. For this, five permanent plots (10 x 10 m each) were established and sampled in the forest interior and at the edge of two agricultural matrices (rice fields and pasture lands), in July 2013. All individuals with a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 5 cm were recorded and measured, and the aboveground biomass was estimated with a general allometric model. Additionally, the importance value index (IVI), species richness and Alpha´s diversity indexes were estimated; an analysis of variance and means comparison tests of Fisher LSD were also carried out. A total of 32 families, 21 genera and 45 species (29 and 33 species in pasture lands and rice fields, respectively) of trees in 0.2 ha were recorded. The most abundant and most ecologically important species were Oxandra espintana and Calliandra sp. (520 and 241 individuals/ha and 72 and 48 % of IVI, respectively). These forests presented a mean dominance of 33.9 m2/ha with no effect (P< 0.05) of forest location or agricultural matrix. The matrix of the landscape did not affect (P> 0.05) the Alpha diversity indexes. The biggest trees and greatest carbon storage were found in forests with pasture matrices when compared to rice fields (14.6 vs 13.4 cm of dbh and 72.9 vs 45.6 t C/ha, respectively). This research provides an understanding of the tree richness and composition and carbon storage of riparian forests in two agricultural matrices, which could be a basis for the establishment of silvopastoral systems with native species.

AbstractCarbon estimations in tropical forests are very important to understand the role of these ecosystems in the carbon cycle, and to support decisions and the formulation of mitigation and adaptive strategies to reduce the greenhouse emission gases (GHG). Nevertheless, detailed ground-based quantifications of total carbon stocks in tropical montane forests are limited, despite their high value in science and ecosystem management (e.g. REDD+). The objective was to identify the role of these ecosystems as carbon stocks, to evaluate the contribution of the pools analyzed (aboveground biomass, belowground biomass and necromass), and to make contributions to the REDD+ approach from the project scale. For this study, we established 44 plots in a heterogeneous landscape composed by old-grown forests located in the Southern Colombian Andes. In each plot, all trees, palms and ferns with diameter (D) ≥ 15 cm were measured. In the case of palms, the height was measured for 40 % of the individuals, following the Colombia National Protocol to estimate biomass and carbon in natural forests. National allometric equations were used to estimate aboveground biomass, and a global equation proposed by IPCC was used for belowground biomass estimation; besides, palms' aboveground biomass was estimated using a local model. The necromass was estimated for dead standing trees and the gross debris. In the latter case, the length and diameters of the extremes in the pieces were measured. Samples for wood density estimations were collected in the field and analyzed in the laboratory. The mean total carbon stock was estimated as 545.9 ± 84.1 Mg/ha (± S.E.). The aboveground biomass contributed with 72.5 %, the belowground biomass with 13.6 %, and the necromass with 13.9 %. The main conclusion is that montane tropical forests store a huge amount of carbon, similar to low land tropical forests. In addition, the study found that the inclusion of other pools could contribute with more than 20 % to total carbon storage, indicating that estimates that only include the aboveground biomass, largely underestimate carbon stocks in tropical forest ecosystems. These results support the importance of including other carbon pools in REDD+ initiatives' estimations. Rev. Biol. Trop. 64 (1): 399-412. Epub 2016 March 01.

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of climatic conditions during the period of bunch formation and growth regulators on yield and quality of banana 'Grande Naine'. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized split plot with six replications. It was considered the plots, and the periods of bunch formation, summer and autumn. In the subplots it was considered the growth regulators: two applications were made with water, gibberellin (GA3, 200mg L-1), auxin (2.4-D, 10mg L-1), cytokinin (TDZ, 150mg L-1) and a mixture of gibberellin, auxin and cytokinin (AG3, 56.3mg L-1; AIB, 56.3mg L-1 and ZEA, 101.3mg L-1). Periods of bunch formation influence the number of hands, the size, shelf life, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids and titratable acidity ratio and the firmness of the fruit. The mixture of growth regulators increase the weight of the bunch and the 4th hand bunches formed in the summer.

Résumé

The tropical montane forests in the Colombian Andean region are located above 1 500m, and have been heavily deforested. Despite the general presumption that productivity and hence carbon stocks in these ecosystems are low, studies in this regard are scarce. This study aimed to i) to estimate Above Ground Biomass (AGB) in forests located in the South of the Colombian Andean region, ii) to identify the carbon storage potential of tropical montane forests dominated by the black oak Colombobalanus excelsa and to identify the relationship between AGB and altitude, and iii) to analyze the role of tropical mountain forests in conservation mechanisms such as Payment for Environmental Services (PES) and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+). Twenty six 0.25ha plots were randomly distributed in the forests and all trees with D≥10cm were measured. The results provided important elements for understanding the role of tropical montane forests as carbon sinks. The information produced can be used in subnational initiatives, which seek to mitigate or reduce the effects of deforestation through management or conservation of these ecosystems, like REDD+ or PES. The AGB and carbon stocks results obtained were similar to those reported for lowland tropical forests. These could be explained by the dominance and abundance of C. excelsa, which accounted for over 81% of AGB/carbon. The error associated with the estimates of AGB/carbon was 10.58%. We found a negative and significant relationship between AGB and altitude, but the higher AGB values were in middle altitudes (≈1 700-1 800m), where the environmental conditions could be favorable to their growth. The carbon storage potential of these forests was higher. However, if the historical rate of the deforestation in the study area continues, the gross emissions of CO2e to the atmosphere could turn these forests in to an important emissions source. Nowadays, it is clear that tropical montane forests are vulnerable to deforestation, especially black Oak forests due to their commercial value. Given their high carbon storage potential, the presence of endemic species and the strategic functions of these ecosystems, we recommend that they should be considered relevant during REDD+, PES or any other conservation assessment. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (1): 69-82. Epub 2015 March 01.

Objective: The effects of the reproductive growth on the source-sink relationship and source-sink characteristic indexes of Alisma plantago-aquatica were studied in order to provide a potential reference for the cultural techniques of high yield and quality and breeding. Methods: The dry weight in each part and the content of non-structure carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds in the leaves and tubers from the wiping off bolting and bolting plant were tested; The accumulative process of physiological indexes was compared. Results: Reproductive growth could benefit the accumulation of reproductive sink, go against the increase of source of leaves and vegetative sink, and obviously increase the plant total storage capacity and the total biomass. Wiping off the reproductive growth could increase the C/N ratio in the leaves at the later stages of plant growth and the tubers during the yield formative period, and promote the production of the leaves and tubers. Conclusion: During the process of cultivation, it is supposed to promptly adjust the plant C/N ratio by artificial measures for increasing the tuber production. The strains with suitable amounts and high C/N ratio in the leaves and high nitrogen content in the tubers at the later stages of the plant growth should be chosen for breeding.

Historically, tillers have been considered detrimental to maize because they do not produce ears and may act as sinks competing for carbohydrates with the main stem. This work was carried out aiming to evaluate the effect of tiller removal on maize grain yield at different sowing dates. The experiment was set during the 2006/07 and 2008/09 growing seasons. A randomized complete block design disposed in split-plots was used. Two sowing dates were tested in the main plots: second half of October (recommended) and second half of December (late). Four tiller's fates were evaluated in the split-plots: tiller removal when the main stem had six expanded leaves (V6), nine expanded leaves (V9), fifteen expanded leaves (V15) and tiller maintenance until harvesting. Hybrid P30F53 was sowed at 55,000 plants ha-1, with a row spacing of 0.7m. The percentage of plants with tillers and the number of tillers per plant were higher when maize was sown in October than in December. There was no grain yield difference between treatments where tillers were preserved and those where they were removed at V6, V9 or V15, regardless of sowing date. Such behavior demonstrates that tillers are not sinks that compromise maize agronomic performance. Furthermore, tillers may contribute positively to grain yield when maize is sown in October.

Résumé

This paper investigated changes in growth and carbohydrate content of shoots and root systems in response to source-sink manipulation in field-grown coffee trees. The source-sink manipulations were carried out using manual de-fruiting. Two plots of trees were established: in one group, the fruit was left on the tree, while in the second group all fruits were removed manually. Similar results were obtained for coffee trees with and without fruit in terms of height, stem and skirt diameter and branch lengths. A biochemical evaluation of the roots showed that no differences were found between the levels of carbohydrates. In the leaves, levels of soluble sugars and reducing sugars were higher in plants with fruit. The starch concentration in leaves and roots did not vary between the plots. Root length density did not vary between plants with and without fruit in the 0 - 0.4 m soil layer. However, plants without fruit had a higher root length density than plants with a full fruit load. These results contrast with results published by others on source-sink relationships of coffee plants. The joint data analysis shows that young trees, with a moderate fruit load, and with good nutritional and health status, produce carbohydrates in sufficient quantities to maintain vegetative and reproductive growth, without harming root system growth.

Objective:To observe the relationship between the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the survival of flap in the rat back which received radiotherapy. Methods: Forty Wistar rats were divided into four groups. A 3×4 cm~2 full thickness dorsal flap with pedicle was prepared at the posterior end. The skin flaps were given~(60)Co radiotherapy in the 2, 4, 6 day postoperation. Group A was given of VEGF in the third, fifth, seventh day. Group B was given a high quantity of VEGF. Group C was the control of Group A,Group D was the control of Group B. Control groups received normal saline. Results: Pathological observation revealed that the survival of flap and blood vessel lumen diameter of group A were higher than that of group B(P<0.05). Group A showed remarkable difference compared with group C(P<0.01). Group B showed remarkable difference compared with group D(P<0.05). Results of fluorescence staining and SDH examination showed that three times injection had better results than one time injection. Conclusion: Three times injection of VEGF has better effect on the viability of rat skin flap than one time injection.

The general aim of this research was to evaluate as the sewage sludge (biosolids) modify C and N stocks in eucalypt plantation. The study was installed with application rates up to 40 t h-1 of dry matter biosolids in Eucalyptus grandis plantation. The eucalypts that received 10 t h-1 of biosolids presented even development that it received full mineral fertilizer, producing, on average, 107,5 t ha-1 of aboveground biomass, 63 percent the more than control. Those treatments also presented larger values of C and N contents in the biomass. The biosolids treated with lime, applied in surface, showed low decomposition rates and it didn’t contribute to increase C and N soil total stocks. The effect of residue on the development of trees is more important to supply input of organic material in system than own application.
