RÉSUMÉ
Introdução: O avanço da pandemia de COVID-19 acarretou alterações no sono da população. Os distúrbios do sono têm relação com as principais alterações de saúde mental e também possuem relação com os fatores psicossociais. Objetivo: Estimar a prevalência e fatores associados às alterações na qualidade do sono em usuários acompanhados na Atenção Primária à Saúde durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Métodos: Estudo do tipo transversal, com adultos (idade >18 anos) de ambos os gêneros, acompanhados por uma unidade de saúde. Foram levantadas as informações do prontuário eletrônico da unidade e, durante a visita domiciliar (entre agosto e setembro de 2021), os dados socioeconômicos, fatores de risco, sinais vitais, variáveis antropométricas, hábitos de vida, medicações em uso, uso dos serviços de saúde, internação e consultas no último ano. A qualidade de vida foi avaliada pelo questionário SF-36 e foi usado o Índice de Qualidade do sono Pittsburgh (PSQI). Resultados: A amostra foi formada predominantemente por mulheres (82,9%) com 60,5±11,7 anos de idade, da cor branca (70,7%), com companheiro (61%) e pertencentes à classe C (65,8%). 53,7% da amostra apresentou até duas comorbidades, 87,8% apresentavam sobrepeso/obesidade e 80% faziam uso de anti-hipertensivo. A prevalência de qualidade do sono ruim foi de 87,8% (IC95% 73,195,0). Os achados apontam para uma relação entre má qualidade do sono com consumo de álcool, presença de ≥3 comorbidades, níveis de PAS, uso de ansiolíticos, nível de escolaridade e uso de serviços de saúde durante a pandemia. Conclusões: A alta prevalência de qualidade do sono ruim na amostra estudada sugere que determinantes sociodemográficos, presença de comorbidades e hábitos de vida devem ser considerados para minimizar os efeitos das alterações do sono na pandemia.
Introduction: The advancement of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in changes in the sleep patterns of the population. Sleep disorders are related to major mental health changes and are also associated with psychosocial factors. Objective: To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with sleep quality changes among users attended in Primary Health Care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving adults (age >18 years) of both genders who were being followed at a healthcare unit. Information was gathered from the unit's electronic medical records, and during home visits (between August and September 2021), socioeconomic data, risk factors, vital signs, anthropometric variables, lifestyle habits, current medications, healthcare service utilization, hospitalization, and consultations in the past year were collected. Quality of life was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality. Results: The sample consisted predominantly of women (82.9%) with an average age of 60.5±11.7 years, of white ethnicity (70.7%), with a partner (61%), and belonging to class C (65.8%). 53.7% of the sample had up to two comorbidities, 87.8% were overweight/obese, and 80% were using antihypertensive medication. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 87.8% (95%CI 73.195.0). The findings indicate a relationship between poor sleep quality and alcohol consumption, the presence of ≥3 comorbidities, systolic blood pressure levels, use of anxiolytics, education level, and the use of healthcare services during the pandemic. Conclusions: The high prevalence of poor sleep quality in the study sample suggests that sociodemographic determinants, presence of comorbidities, and lifestyle habits should be considered to minimize the effects of sleep disturbances during the pandemic.

Los trastornos del sueño están relacionados con los principales cambios en la salud mental y también se asocian con factores psicosociales. Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia y los factores asociados con alteraciones en la calidad del sueño en usuarios atendidos en la Atención Primaria de Salud durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Métodos: Estudio transversal con adultos (edad >18 años) de ambos géneros que son atendidos en una unidad de salud. Se recopilaron datos del historial clínico electrónico de la unidad y durante la visita domiciliaria (entre agosto y septiembre de 2021) se obtuvieron datos socioeconómicos, factores de riesgo, signos vitales, variables antropométricas, hábitos de vida, medicamentos utilizados, uso de servicios de salud, hospitalización y consultas en el último año. La calidad de vida se evaluó mediante el cuestionario SF-36 y se utilizó el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (PSQI). Resultados: La muestra estuvo compuesta predominantemente por mujeres (82,9%) con una edad de 60,5±11,7 años, de raza blanca (70,7%), con pareja (61%) y pertenecientes a la clase C (65,8%). El 53,7% de la muestra presentó hasta dos comorbilidades, el 87,8% tenían sobrepeso/obesidad y el 80% utilizaba medicación antihipertensiva. La prevalencia de mala calidad del sueño fue del 87,8% (IC95% 73,195,0). Los hallazgos señalan una relación entre la mala calidad del sueño y el consumo de alcohol, la presencia de ≥3 comorbilidades, los niveles de presión arterial sistólica (PAS), el uso de ansiolíticos, el nivel de escolaridad y el uso de servicios de salud durante la pandemia. Conclusiones: La alta prevalencia de mala calidad del sueño en la muestra estudiada sugiere que se deben considerar los determinantes sociodemográficos, la presencia de comorbilidades y los hábitos de vida para minimizar los efectos de los trastornos del sueño en la pandemia.

Resumen Objetivo: Ante la escasez de investigaciones que traten de manera conjunta el conocimiento, la calidad y la higiene del sueño en el adolescente, el objetivo del presente estudio es analizar las diferencias y las relaciones que existen entre estas variables en función de características sociodemográficas y personales. Método: A través de los instrumentos Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS), Spanish Adolescents and Young Adults Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (AYA-PSQI-S) y Adolescents Sleep Hygiene Scale Revied (ASHSr), se midieron las características del sueño de 140 estudiantes (M = 16,75; DE = 0,75). Resultados: El 89,3% de los adolescentes presentaban problemas de sueño, subyacentes de la mejorable higiene del sueño por parte del 62,2% y de un escaso conocimiento general del sueño. El sexo femenino y el alumnado en cursos superiores presentaron mayores problemas para conciliar el sueño, somnolencia y una baja gestión cognitiva-emocional (p < 0,05). La higiene del sueño (β = - 0,344), la edad (β = 0,154) y el autoconcepto (β = -0,349) son los factores que predijeron significativamente (p < 0,05) la calidad del sueño del adolescente. Conclusiones: La adquisición de una adecuada higiene del sueño se vuelve fundamental para mejorar la calidad del descanso y la funcionalidad diurna en adolescentes, destacando su importancia, sobre todo, en niveles académicos avanzados y en el caso específico de las mujeres.
Abstract Objective: Given the scarcity of research addressing the intersection of knowledge, sleep quality, and hygiene among adolescents, the primary objective of this study is to analyse the variations and correlations among these variables based on socio-demographic and personal characteristics. Method: The Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS), the Spanish Adolescents and Young Adults Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (AYA-PSQI-S), the Adolescents Sleep Hygiene Scale Revied (ASHSr) were used to measure the sleep characteristics of the 140 Spanish students (M = 16,75; SD = 0,75). Results: Sleep problems were found in 89,3% of the adolescents, underlying poor sleep hygiene in 62,2% and poor general sleep knowledge (SBS = 12,04). Females and students in higher grades presented greater problems in falling asleep, sleepiness, and poor cognitive-emotional management (p < 0,05). Sleep hygiene (β = - 0,344), age (β = 0,154), and self-concept (β = -0,349) were the factors that significantly (p < 0,05) predicted adolescent sleep quality. Conclusions: The acquisition of proper sleep hygiene becomes crucial to enhance the quality of rest and daytime functionality in adolescents, emphasizing its significance, especially in advanced academic levels and specifically in the case of females.
RÉSUMÉ
SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different dietary inflammatory index diets on inflammatory markers, anthropometric measurements, and sleep quality in obese subjects. METHODS: This study was conducted in a public hospital in Turkey between November 2021 and May 2022. Participants with pro-inflammatory dietary habits were included in the study. Randomly divided into two groups of 33 participants, they were subjected to an anti-inflammatory diet or a control diet for 8 weeks. The study evaluated the anthropometric parameters, inflammatory biomarkers, and sleep quality indices of the diet groups. RESULTS: Significant reductions in body mass index were observed in both groups, more marked in the anti-inflammatory diet cohort. C-reactive protein levels, indicative of inflammation, also decreased substantially in both groups, with a more marked reduction in the anti-inflammatory diet cohort. Despite the improvement in sleep quality in both groups, the variation was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the importance of anti-inflammatory diets in nutritional strategies for obesity by reducing body mass index and inflammation.

Background: KaraCalm™ is a novel polyherbal formulation obtained from the combination of Valeriana officinalis extract, Passiflora incarnata extract, Ocimum sanctum extract, Ziziphus jujuba extract, Rosmarinus officinalis extract, and Nigella sativa extract. The objective of the present investigation was to assess the efficacy and safety of KaraCalm™ to manage stress and improve sleep in healthy subjects in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Methods: A total of 60 healthy volunteers were randomized into two groups, with 30 subjects in the KaraCalm™ group and 30 in the placebo group. Participants were asked to take KaraCalm™ 500 mg or placebo once daily for 56 days. As primary outcomes, sleep analysis was performed by using Actiwatch, while stress level was evaluated with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) scores from baseline to the end of the study period. Serum cortisol, and hs-CRP from baseline to the end of the study period were assessed as secondary endpoints. Results: An increase in overall sleep quality was observed in the KaraCalm™ group compared to the placebo as measured by total sleep time, onset latency, wake after sleep onset minutes, and number of awakenings. There was also a reduction in PSS scores in the KaraCalm™ group from baseline to the end of the study, indicating reduced stress levels. A significant reduction in Serum cortisol and hs-C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the KaraCalm™ group from baseline to the end of the study further supported the effectiveness of KaraCalm™ in reducing stress. There was no significant change in the safety analyses of the patients in the intervention group when assessed from the start of the study to the end. Conclusions: KaraCalm™ can be considered a safe and effective dietary herbal Supplement to reduce stress and improve sleep quality.

La calidad del sueño en los estudiantes es un factor esencial que influye en el correcto desarrollo de los procesos cognitivos del aprendizaje, así como en la calidad de vida y la salud mental y física de los futuros profesionales. Objetivo: evaluar la relación entre la ansiedad, la depresión y la calidad del sueño en estudiantes de la carrera de Odontología de la Universidad Nacional del Altiplano de Puno. Materiales y métodos: estudio de tipo observacional de cohorte transversal con la participación de 78 estudiantes, con edad promedio de 22.63±2.87 años, con una distribución de género de 32 varones (41,0 %) y 46 mujeres (59,0 %). Se utilizó la escala de valoración de Hamilton para la evaluación de la ansiedad y la depresión, con una consistencia interna de α = 0,88 y 0,86, respectivamente y el cuestionario de Pittsburgh para medir el índice de calidad del sueño (α = 0,87). Resultados: en el modelo predictivo los coeficientes estandarizados ß señalan que la ansiedad psíquica (ß = -,870; p<0,001), la depresión (ß = ,119; p<0,05) y el desarrollo de prácticas clínicas (ß = -0,019; p<0,05) fueron los factores que más contribuyeron significativamente al índice de calidad del sueño de los estudiantes. Conclusión: estos hallazgos subrayan la importancia de abordar los problemas del sueño como parte integral del tratamiento de la ansiedad y la depresión, además de resaltar la necesidad de tener en cuenta la salud mental en la evaluación y el manejo de los trastornos del sueño
The quality of sleep-in students is an essential factor that influences the correct development of cognitive learning processes, as well as the quality of life and the mental and physical health of future professionals. Objective: to evaluate the relationship between anxiety, depression and sleep quality in students of the Dentistry program at the National University of the Altiplano of Puno. Materials and methods: observational cross-sectional cohort study with the participation of 78 students, with an average age of 22.63±2.87 years, with a gender distribution of 32 men (41.0%) and 46 women (59.0%). The Hamilton rating scale was used to evaluate anxiety and depression, with an internal consistency of α = 0.88 and 0.86, respectively, and the Pittsburgh questionnaire was used to measure the sleep quality index (α = 0.87). Results: in the predictive model, the standardized ß coefficients indicate that psychological anxiety (ß = -.870; p<0.001), depression (ß = .119; p<0.05) and the development of clinical practices (ß = -0.019; p<0.05) were the factors that contributed most significantly to the students' sleep quality index. Conclusion: these findings underscore the importance of addressing sleep problems as an integral part of the treatment of anxiety and depression, as well as highlighting the need to consider mental health in the assessment and management of sleep disorders

Los estudiantes universitarios están propensos a sufrir alteraciones en el sueño como la somnolencia diurna, lo cual tiene repercusión directa en su calidad de vida y desempeño diario. Objetivo. Determinar la relación entre la calidad de sueño y somnolencia diurna en estudiantes de la Universidad nombre, en Perú. Materiales y Métodos. Se consideró el enfoque cuantitativo, de diseño no experimental, con la aplicación de los instrumentos de calidad del sueño de Pittsburgh y la escala de somnolencia Epworth. La población fue de 446 estudiantes y se obtuvo una muestra de 220 estudiantes universitarios, mediante un muestreo no probabilístico. Resultados. Se presentan severos problemas en relación a la calidad del sueño en un 60,9 %; así como en la calidad subjetiva del sueño en un 49,5 %, duración del sueño en un 54,5 %, uso de medicación hipnótica en un 56,8 %, disfunción diurna 50,5 %; y la latencia del sueño, eficiencia de sueño habitual y alteraciones del sueño en un 57,7 %. Entre tanto, la somnolencia diurna fue alta en un 58,6 %. Conclusiones. Existe relación positiva y significativa entre la calidad del sueño y la somnolencia diurna en los alumnos de la Universidad nombre, alcanzando una ρ = 0.000 (ρ < 0.05); del mismo modo se encontró relación significativa en cada una de las dimensiones de la calidad del sueño y la somnolencia diurna; de lo que se interpreta que la calidad del sueño de problemas de nivel leve, la somnolencia diurna se encuentra en niveles bajos en los universitarios.
University students are prone to sleep disturbances such as daytime sleepiness, which has a direct impact on their quality of life and daily performance. Objective. Determine the relationship between sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in students at the Universidad Nombre, in Peru. Materials and methods. The quantitative approach was considered, with a non-experimental design, with the application of the Pittsburgh sleep quality instruments and the Epworth sleepiness scale. The population was 446 students and a sample of 220 university students was obtained, through non-probabilistic sampling. Results. There are severe problems in relation to sleep quality in 60.9 %; as well as in the subjective quality of sleep in 49.5 %, duration of sleep in 54.5 %, use of hypnotic medication in 56.8 %, daytime dysfunction 50.5 %; and sleep latency, habitual sleep efficiency and sleep disturbances by 57.7 %. Meanwhile, daytime sleepiness was high at 58.6 %. Conclusions. There is a positive and significant relationship between sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in the students of the Name University, reaching ρ = 0.000 (ρ < 0.05); Likewise, a significant relationship was found in each of the dimensions of sleep quality and daytime sleepiness; from which it is interpreted that the quality of sleep has mild problems, daytime sleepiness is at low levels in university students.
Os estudantes universitários são propensos a distúrbios do sono, como a sonolência diurna, o que tem impacto direto na sua qualidade de vida e no desempenho diário. Objetivo. Determinar a relação entre qualidade do sono e sonolência diurna em estudantes da Universidad Nombre, no Peru. Materiais e métodos. Considerou-se a abordagem quantitativa, com desenho não experimental, com aplicação dos instrumentos de qualidade do sono de Pittsburgh e da escala de sonolência de Epworth. A população foi de 446 estudantes e obteve-se uma amostra de 220 estudantes universitários, através de amostragem não probabilística. Resultados. Existem problemas graves em relação à qualidade do sono em 60,9 %; bem como na qualidade subjetiva do sono em 49,5 %, duração do sono em 54,5 %, uso de medicação hipnótica em 56,8 %, disfunção diurna 50,5 %; e latência do sono, eficiência habitual do sono e distúrbios do sono em 57,7 %. Enquanto isso, a sonolência diurna foi elevada, 58,6 %. Conclusões. Existe uma relação positiva e significativa entre a qualidade do sono e a sonolência diurna nos estudantes da Universidade do Nome, atingindo ρ = 0,000 (ρ <, 05); Da mesma forma, foi encontrada relação significativa em cada uma das dimensões da qualidade do sono e da sonolência diurna; a partir do qual se interpreta que a qualidade do sono apresenta problemas leves, a sonolência diurna é baixa em estudantes universitários.

There are severe problems in relation to sleep quality in 60.9 %; as well as in the subjective quality of sleep in 49.5 %, duration of sleep in 54.5 %, use of hypnotic medication in 56.8 %, daytime dysfunction 50.5 %; and sleep latency, habitual sleep efficiency and sleep disturbances by 57.7 %. Meanwhile, daytime sleepiness was high at 58.6 %. Conclusions. There is a positive and significant relationship between sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in the students of the Name University, reaching ρ = 0.000 (ρ < 0.05); Likewise, a significant relationship was found in each of the dimensions of sleep quality and daytime sleepiness; from which it is interpreted that the quality of sleep has mild problems, daytime sleepiness is at low levels in university students.
Os estudantes universitários são propensos a distúrbios do sono, como a sonolência diurna, o que tem impacto direto na sua qualidade de vida e no desempenho diário. Objetivo. Determinar a relação entre qualidade do sono e sonolência diurna em estudantes da Universidad Nombre, no Peru. Materiais e métodos. Considerou-se a abordagem quantitativa, com desenho não experimental, com aplicação dos instrumentos de qualidade do sono de Pittsburgh e da escala de sonolência de Epworth. A população foi de 446 estudantes e obteve-se uma amostra de 220 estudantes universitários, através de amostragem não probabilística. Resultados. Existem problemas graves em relação à qualidade do sono em 60,9 %; bem como na qualidade subjetiva do sono em 49,5 %, duração do sono em 54,5 %, uso de medicação hipnótica em 56,8 %, disfunção diurna 50,5 %; e latência do sono, eficiência habitual do sono e distúrbios do sono em 57,7 %. Enquanto isso, a sonolência diurna foi elevada, 58,6 %. Conclusões. Existe uma relação positiva e significativa entre a qualidade do sono e a sonolência diurna nos estudantes da Universidade do Nome, atingindo ρ = 0,000 (ρ < 0,05); Da mesma forma, foi encontrada relação significativa em cada uma das dimensões da qualidade do sono e da sonolência diurna; a partir do qual se interpreta que a qualidade do sono apresenta problemas leves, a sonolência diurna é baixa em estudantes universitários.

Background: The quality of sleep, a multifaceted construct encompassing factors such as duration, continuity, and depth, plays a pivotal role in cognitive function, while perceived stress, the subjective appraisal of stressors and one's ability to cope with them, has been identified as a significant factor affecting various aspects of individuals' lives. The present study aimed to investigate “Perceived stress and sleep quality among patients who visited community and primary health centers in Kerala during the COVID-19 pandemic”. Methods: The sample of the study consist of 60 patients aged between 18 and 50, who visited community and primary health centers in Kerala. Questionnaire for Perceived Stress Scale – Malayalam Version and Sleep Quality Scale were used in this study. Results: Findings of the study reveals that the patients visiting community and primary health centers in Kerala during the COVID-19 pandemic experience slightly elevated levels of perceived stress, closely aligned with general stress scores. However, their sleep quality remains largely normal, with only minor deviations. Conclusions: The study reveals a negative impact of pandemic-related stress on sleep timing and quality among these patients. Consequently, it underscores the importance of addressing both stress levels and sleep quality during such public health crises.

Background: Poor sleep quality is a global health concern and is fast becoming one of the silent epidemics. Sleep quality among medical students is of particular interest as they are considered high risk groups for developing sleep related issues because of their demanding schedules. This study aims to estimate the magnitude of poor sleep and its correlates among undergraduate medical students of a medical school in Belgaum, India. Methods: An institutional based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 293 undergraduate medical students using a self-administered questionnaire. Sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). The potential determinants of quality of sleep were identified using logistic regression. A p<0.05 was considered statistically significant and adjusted odds ratio with 95%CI was used to present the strength of association. Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality among medical students was 69.3%. Factors like gender, female students (AOR=2.381, 95%CI=1.359-4.172), being overweight or obese (AOR=2.499, 95%CI=1.297-4.817) were associated with poor sleep quality. Students with good sleep hygiene (AOR=0.415, 95%CI=0.231-0.745) and who did not use technology during bedtime (AOR=0.38, 95%CI=0.168-0.878) were less likely of having poor sleep quality at p<0.05. Conclusions: Prevalence of poor sleep quality among substantial proportion of medical students in the current study is alarming. The already existing personal and professional development programme committee can conduct routine screening to assess sleep quality among students and focus on programmes to improve their sleep hygiene.

Background: Sleep disturbances are common among medical students worldwide and affects their health and academic performance. The objective of this study was to assess the quality of sleep in undergraduate medical students of Delhi. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 234 undergraduate students from medical college in New Delhi. A pre-designed, pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and life style details and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to study the quality of sleep. Data was analyzed by SPSS software version 25.0 and for qualitative data analysis chi-square test was used. Results: Mean age of study subjects was 21.99±1.74 years and males (67.5%) were more as compared to (32.5%) females. Most of the participants 47.4% were in first and second year, 35.5% were from third and final year and 17.1% were interns. Out of 234 participants, only 44% of study participants has good quality of sleep. Most of study participants (56%) were suffering from poor sleep quality. Batch of MBBS, relationship status, BMI and dietary habits of participants were found to be significant predictors of quality of sleep. Conclusions: This study shows that 56% of study participants were suffering from poor quality of sleep. Professionals and medical students who suffer from poor sleep quality have a higher risk of misjudgements, substance abuse, accidents, burnout, anxiety, and depression. So, there is a need to improve knowledge regarding importance of good sleep quality among medical students.

Introdução: Na pandemia desencadeada pela COVID-19, o desenvolvimento progressivo de sintomas de ansiedade e a má qualidade do sono devem ser investigados em profissionais e estudantes da área da saúde para o adequado manejo. Objetivo: Identificar a prevalência de problemas de sono e sintomas ansiosos em profissionais e estudantes da saúde, e analisar o efeito de variáveis sociodemográficas-clínicas na ansiedade e sono dessa população.Metodologia: Neste estudo transversal de caráter quantitativo aplicou-se um formulário online a 3.337 profissionais e estudantes da saúde do Brasil participantes de um congresso virtual, contendo 51 perguntas subdivididas em três categorias: Perfil sociodemográfico-clínico, Escala de Sono de Jenkins e Inventário de Ansiedade de BECK.Resultados: Dentre os participantes, 81,4% eram estudantes da área da saúde e 12,8% profissionais de saúde. Os achados obtidos indicam que 41% dos participantes apresentaram problemas de sono muito frequentes e 46,6% sinais de ansiedade moderada a grave. Houve associação estatisticamente significativa entre as variáveis sociodemográficas-clínicas e os questionários validados de sono e ansiedade. Conclusão: Essa pesquisa identificou importante prevalência de problemasde sono e sintomas ansiosos em profissionais e estudantes da saúde, sendo primordial a identificação precoce dessas alterações para um manejo efetivo (AU).
Introduction: In the pandemic triggered by COVID-19, the progressive development of anxiety symptoms and poor sleep quality should be investigated in healthcare professionals and students for proper management.Objective: To identify the prevalence of sleep problems and anxious symptoms in healthcare professionals and students, and to analyze the effect of sociodemographic-clinical variables on anxiety and sleep in this population. Methodology: In this cross-sectional quantitative study, an online form was applied to 3,337 healthcare professionals and students from Brazil participating in a virtual congress, containing 51 questions subdivided into three categories: Sociodemographic-clinical profile, Jenkins Sleep Scale and BECK Anxiety Inventory.Results: Among the participants, 81.4% were healthcare students and 12.8% were healthcare professionals. The findings indicate that 41% of the participants had very frequent sleep problems and 46.6% showed signs of moderate to severe anxiety. There was a statistically significant association between the sociodemographic-clinical variables and the validated sleep and anxiety questionnaires. Conclusion:This study identified a high prevalence of sleep problems and anxiety symptoms among healthcare professionals and students, and early identification of these alterations is essential for effective management (AU).

Os instrumentos utilizados na coleta dos dados foram o Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck,Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh, Escala de Sonolência de Epwort-th e um questionário sociodemográfico. Utilizou-se o software estatístico R versão 4.0.2 e foram feitas suas correlações. Resultados: Foram encontrados padrões de ansiedade grave, com níveis de sonolência diurna anormal. A correlação entre o Inventário de Ansiedade de Beckcom a Escala de Sonolência de Epworth e o Índice de Qualidade de sono de Pittsburgh, que embora tenha sido considerada fraca a moderada, por sua vez mostrou-se significativa (r=0,29; p=0,01). Ademais, temos que, a relação entre oinventário de Becke o Índice de qualidade de sono de Pittsburgh mostrou-se também com valor de significância (r=0,35; p=0,01). Conclusões:Foi possível compreender que a ansiedade pode interferir na qualidade do sono e sonolência diurna do público de estudantes de Enfermagem (AU).
Objective: To evaluate the correlation between anxiety and sleep quality and daytime sleepiness among undergraduate nursing students, as well as to characterize the students' sociodemographic profile. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study with a quantitative approach involving 255 nursing students from a private institution. Data collection took place in October 2022 in classrooms. The instruments used to collect the data were the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Epwort-Th Sleepiness Scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Statistical software R version 4.0.2 was used and correlations were made. Results:Patterns of severe anxiety were found, with abnormal levels of daytime sleepiness. The correlation between the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, although considered weak to moderate, was significant (r=0.29; p=0.01). Furthermore, the relationship between the Beck Inventory and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was also found to be significant (r=0.35; p=0.01). Conclusions:It was possible to understand that anxiety can interfere with the quality of sleep and daytime sleepiness among nursing students (AU).

Metodología:Estudio descriptivo transversal con enfoque cuantitativo en el que participaron 255 estudiantes universitarios de enfermería de una institución privada. La recogida de datos tuvo lugar en octubre de 2022 en las aulas. Los instrumentos utilizados para la recogida de datos fueron el Inventario de Ansiedad de Beck, el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh, la Escala de Somnolencia de Epwort-Th y un cuestionario sociodemográfico. Se utilizó el software estadístico R versión 4.0.2 y se realizaron correlaciones. Resultados:Se encontraron patrones de ansiedad severa, con niveles anormales de somnolencia diurna. La correlación entre el Inventario de Ansiedad de Beck con la Escala de Somnolencia de Epworth y el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh, aunque se consideró de débil a moderada, fue significativa (r=0,29; p=0,01). Además, la relación entre el Inventario de Beck y el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh también resultó significativa (r=0,35; p=0,01). Conclusiones: Se pudo comprender que la ansiedad puede interferir en la calidad del sueño y en la somnolencia diurna de los estudiantes de enfermería (AU).

Em universitários, comprometimentos na qualidade de sono e na saúde mental estão relacionados com maior disfunção diurna e menor desempenho acadêmico. O contexto causado pela covid-19 prejudicou a qualidade de sono e a saúde mental de diversos grupos populacionais. Entretanto, mais estudos são necessários para avaliar essas variáveis em estudantes universitários matriculados em diferentes cursos da área da saúde durante a referida pandemia. Com esta pesquisa, objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade de sono e saúde mental de estudantes universitários da área da saúde durante a pandemia da covid-19, bem como investigar possíveis correlações entre os referidos aspectos nessa população. Trata-se de estudo transversal que empregou um formulário eletrônico contendo tanto perguntas para caracterização da amostra quanto questionários específicos. O índice de qualidade de sono de Pittsburgh (PSQI) foi empregado para avaliar a qualidade de sono. Já o questionário de saúde geral (QSG-12) e a escala hospitalar de ansiedade e depressão (HAD) para avaliar, respectivamente, o bem-estar psicológico e ansiedade e depressão. 324 estudantes da área da saúde participaram deste estudo. Entre eles, 87.3% apresentaram uma qualidade de sono pobre (≥ 5), 74.1% apresentaram prejuízo na saúde mental e 73.7% apresentaram quadro de ansiedade possível ou provável. Além disso, evidenciou-se correlação moderada positiva entre os valores do PSQI, do QSG-12 e da escala HAD. Nesse contexto, estudos são necessários para investigar opções terapêuticas capazes de atenuar esses impactos.
In university students, sleep quality and mental health impairments are related to greater daytime dysfunction and lower academic performance. COVID-19 has harmed the quality of sleep and mental health of several population groups. However, more studies are needed to evaluate the quality of sleep and mental health of university students enrolled in health courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. To evaluate the quality of sleep and mental health of university students in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic and to investigate possible correlations between the aforementioned aspects in this population. An electronic form containing questions to characterize its sample and other specific questionnaires were used in this cross-sectional study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality and the General Health Questionnaire (QSG-12) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) were used to evaluate psychological well-being, anxiety, and depression, respectively. Overall, 324 health students participated in this study. Of these, 87.3% of students had poor sleep quality (≥ 5), 74.1% had impaired mental health, and 73.7% had possible or probable anxiety. Furthermore, the PSQI, QSG-12, and HAD scale values showed a moderately positive correlation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, university students in healthcare experienced significant losses in their sleep quality and mental health. In this context, studies must investigate therapeutic options to mitigate these impacts.
Las alteraciones en la calidad del sueño y la salud mental de estudiantes universitarios se relacionan con una mayor disfunción diurna y menor rendimiento académico. El contexto provocado por el covid-19 ha perjudicado la calidad del sueño y la salud mental de varios grupos de la población. Sin embargo, se necesitan más estudios para evaluar la calidad del sueño y la salud mental de estudiantes universitarios matriculados en diferentes carreras de salud durante la pandemia del covid-19. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la calidad del sueño y la salud mental de estudiantes universitarios en el campo de la salud durante la pandemia del covid-19, así como investigar posibles correlaciones entre los aspectos antes mencionados en esta población. Se trata de un estudio transversal que utilizó un formulario electrónico que contenía preguntas para caracterizar la muestra y cuestionarios específicos. Se utilizó el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburg (PSQI) para evaluar la calidad del sueño. El Cuestionario de Salud General (CSG-12) y la Escala Hospitalaria de Ansiedad y Depresión (HADS) se utilizaron para evaluar, respectivamente, el bienestar psicológico y la ansiedad y depresión. En este estudio participaron 324 estudiantes del campo de la salud. De estos, el 87,3% de los estudiantes tenía mala calidad del sueño (≥ 5), el 74,1% presentaban problemas de salud mental y el 73,7% tenía posible o probable ansiedad. Además, hubo una correlación positiva moderada entre los valores de las escalas PSQI, CSG-12 y HADS. Durante la pandemia del covid-19, los estudiantes universitarios del campo de la salud experimentaron pérdidas significativas en su calidad de sueño y salud mental. En este contexto, son necesarios estudios que investiguen opciones terapéuticas capaces de mitigar estos impactos.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Evaluar las características sociodemográficas y académicas asociadas a la calidad del sueño en estudiantes de Medicina Humana. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal en una muestra que se seleccionó de manera aleatoria de 184 estudiantes de Medicina Humana de una universidad privada ubicada en la ciudad de Lima, Perú. Se llevó a cabo entre junio y julio del 2022, periodo de retorno gradual de los estudiantes a la presencialidad. Los participantes completaron un formulario virtual anónimo que contenía preguntas sobre factores sociodemográficos y académicos, y el índice de calidad de sueño de Pittsburgh (ICSP). Este instrumento comprende siete parámetros con un puntaje cuyo rango es de 0 a 21, donde la buena calidad del sueño se definió de 0 a 5 puntos. El desenlace fue dicotómico (buena y mala calidad del sueño), por lo que se aplicó una regresión logística binaria para evaluar los factores asociados. Resultados: El 53,26 % eran mujeres y el promedio de edad fue 20,05, con una desviación estándar de 1,73. El 61,35 % de las horas de clases fueron dictadas de manera virtual. En la muestra, la prevalencia de una mala calidad del sueño fue 69,02 %; entre mujeres fue 76,53 % y en varones, 60,47 %. Entre los que tuvieron mala calidad del sueño, la media del porcentaje de virtualidad fue mayor respecto a los de buena calidad (63,48 % vs. 56,58 %, p = 0,030). Independientemente del porcentaje de clases virtuales, las mujeres tuvieron el doble de chance de tener mala calidad de sueño (OR = 2,00, IC 95 %: 1,05-3,82). Conclusiones: La mala calidad de sueño afectó a siete de cada diez estudiantes de Medicina Humana en el contexto del retorno gradual a la presencialidad posrestricciones sociales por la pandemia de la COVID-19. Las mujeres tuvieron mayor chance de mala calidad de sueño, independientemente del porcentaje de clases virtuales.
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the sociodemographic and academic characteristics associated with sleep quality among School of Human Medicine students. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a randomly selected sample of 184 School of Human Medicine students from a private university located in the city of Lima, Peru. The study was conducted between June and July 2022, a period of gradual return to in-person classes. The participants completed an anonymous virtual survey containing questions on sociodemographic and academic factors as well as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). This instrument comprised seven parameters with scores ranging from 0 to 21, where a good sleep quality was established from 0 to 5 points. The outcome was dichotomous (good and poor sleep quality), so binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the associated factors. Results: Females accounted for 53.26 % and the mean age was 20.05 with a standard deviation of 1.73. Concerning the hours of class time, 61.35 % were taught online. As for the sample, the prevalence of poor sleep quality was 69.02 %, out of which 76.53 % were females and 60.47 % males. The mean percentage of online classes was higher among those with poor sleep quality compared to those with good sleep quality (63.48 % versus 56.58 %, p = 0.030). Regardless of the percentage of online classes, females were twice as likely to have poor sleep quality (OR = 2.00, 95 % CI: 1.05 to 3.82). Conclusions: Poor sleep quality affected 7 out of 10 School of Human Medicine students in the context of the gradual return to in-person classes after the COVID-19 social restrictions. Females had a higher chance of poor sleep quality, regardless of the percentage of online classes.

Background: Electronic devices here means devices like computer, laptop, smart phones, e-games etc. Recently the ownership, use and time-spent on electronic devices has increased dramatically on all age groups for the purpose of communication, entertainment, education, work, etc. and mostly adults are dependent on these devices. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional was done among 248 BPH students of Kathmandu valley. Four colleges were selected through lottery method and 62 students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year were conveniently selected from each college by disproportionate stratified sampling. Semi-structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data which was analysed in SPSS version 21.0 and interpreted using bivariate test. Results: All the respondents owned at least one electronic device. Smart phones were found to be the mostly used electronic device and entertainment was the main purpose for which the devices were used. 10.5% showed range of health adversities in relation to electronic device use with eye symptoms being the most common adversity. 80% were found to use electronic device before going to bed which was associated with the sleep quality of the respondents. Conclusions: This study concluded that time-spent on electronic device is high and using electronic devices before bed time was significantly associated with the sleep quality. Not just sleep quality but excessive use of these devices for long run had the risk of developing health effects like headache, eye, ear and musculoskeletal symptoms and few had mild health effects.

abstract Introduction: The prolongation and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to an uncertain and devastating panorama in many populations, and the evidence shows a high prevalence of mental health problems in medical students. The objective was to evaluate the association between mood disorders and sleep quality (SQ) in Peruvian medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 310 medical students from a private uni versity in Peru. The SQ was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while mood disorders were evaluated using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). All information was collected by online surveys and then analyzed in the R programming language. Results: The SQ results measured by PSQI were poor in 83.9% of the medical students. In the Poison regression analysis, the results of the bivariate analysis in men show that all mood disorders found the prevalence of poor SQ. However, in the multivariate analysis only stress (PRa = 1.30; 95% CI, 1.08-1.57; P <0.01) and anxiety (PRa = 1.34; 95% CI, 1.09-1.56; P < 0.01) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. Women had a similar pattern in bivariate analysis, whereas in multivariate analysis, only severe stress (PRa = 1.15; 95% CI, 1.01-1.29; P < 0.05) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. Conclusions: This study allows us to observe the consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on medical students in Peru. It also revealed a population group vulnerable to poor quality of sleep and bad mood, which in the future will impact on health. It is suggested to educate medical students about the importance of proper sleep hygiene and the consequences of poor sleep hygiene practices.
resumen Introducción: La prolongación y las consecuencias de la pandemia de COVID-19 generan un panorama incierto y devastador en muchas poblaciones, y la evidencia muestra una alta prevalencia de problemas de salud mental en estudiantes de Medicina. El objetivo del estudio es evaluar la asociación entre los trastornos del estado de ánimo y la calidad del sueño (SQ) en estudiantes de Medicina peruanos durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal en 310 estudiantes de Medicina de una universi dad privada del Perú. El SQ se midió a través del Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (PSQI), mientras que los trastornos del estado de ánimo se evaluaron mediante la Escala de Depresión, Ansiedad y Estrés-21 (DASS-21). Toda la información se recopiló mediante encuestas en línea y luego se analizó en el lenguaje de programación R. Resultados: Los resultados de SQ medido por PSQI fue malo en un 83,9% de los estudiantes de Medicina. En el análisis de regresión de Poisson, los resultados del análisis bivariado en varones muestran que todos los trastornos del estado de ánimo aumentan la prevalencia de mala SQ, pero en el análisis multivariado solo el estrés (PRa = 1,30; IC95%, 1,08-1,57; p < 0,01) y la ansiedad (PRa = 1,34; IC95%, 1,09-1,56; p < 0,01) aumentaron la prevalencia de mala SQ. Las mujeres tuvieron un patrón similar en el análisis bivariado, pero en el análisis multivariado solo el estrés grave (PRa = 1,15; IC95%, 1,01-1,29; p <0,05) aumentó la prevalencia de mala SQ. Conclusiones: Este estudio permite observar las consecuencias de la pandemia COVID-19 en los estudiantes de Medicina de Perú. Se da a conocer que son una población vulnerable a la mala calidad del sueño y el mal humor, lo que en el futuro repercutirá en su salud mental y física y como profesional de la salud. Se propone formar a los estudiantes de Medicina en la importancia de una adecuada higiene del sueño y las consecuencias de las malas prácticas de higiene del sueño.

Background: This study aimed to assess the sleep quality of family medicine physicians before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and to explore the associations between sleep quality and various demographic and health-related factors. Methods: A total of 109 family medicine physicians participated in this cross-sectional study. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was utilized to evaluate sleep quality, encompassing seven components: subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication, and daytime dysfunction. Data were collected asking questions regarding both before and during the pandemic period. Descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Results: The study revealed significant changes in sleep quality components before and during the pandemic. While sleep latency and sleep duration improved, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication, and daytime dysfunction worsened during the pandemic. The overall global PSQI score indicated a decline in sleep quality during the pandemic. Females reported poorer sleep quality than males. Participants with general anxiety disorder, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension experienced worse sleep quality. Other demographic and health-related factors exhibited mixed associations with sleep quality. Conclusions: The study highlights the nuanced impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sleep quality of family medicine physicians. The observed changes in sleep quality components and their associations with various factors underscore the need for tailored interventions to address sleep disturbances among healthcare professionals. These findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of sleep quality dynamics in the context of a global crisis and emphasize the significance of promoting well-being among healthcare providers for enhanced patient care.

Background: Mental health related symptoms are common among the population. Current treatment exhibits serious adverse effects, delayed onset of action and low efficacy. Ashwagandha has a variety of beneficial effects in mental health disorders. We did a comparison of two Ashwagandha brands using a variety of scales for anxiety, depression, stress, and sleep quality. Methods: The study was conducted in 80 patients suffering from mental health related symptoms. Test product used was: Herbochem +91 Ashwagandha 500 mg capsules and control used was: KSM 66 Ashwagandha 600 mg capsules. Results: The reduction in the perceived stress scores and Hamilton depression scale scores at day 30/60 from day 0 was higher in the test group as compared with the control group. The reduction in the Beck抯 anxiety inventory scores at day 30/60/90 from day 0 was higher in the test group as compared with the control group. The increase in the Pittsburgh sleep quality index scores at day 30/60 from day 0 was higher in the test group as compared with the control group. The reduction in the serum cortisol scores at day 30 from day 0 was higher in the test group as compared with the control group. Results showed that, the incidence of adverse events was same in both groups. Conclusions: It is important to note that test product having 500 mg Ashwagandha, showed better efficacy as compared to control product having 100 mg more (600 mg) of Ashwagandha.

RESUMEN Evaluar la asociación entre sintomatología ansioso-depresiva y la calidad de sueño en alumnos de la Universidad de Piura, Perú, pertenecientes al programa Beca 18. Estudio observacional transversal, en el que se utilizó el Índice de Calidad de Sueño de Pittsburgh (PSQI), la Escala de Autodiagnóstico de Ansiedad de Zung (SAS) y la Escala de Depresión de Zung (SDS). De los 293 alumnos becarios participantes en el estudio, 62,5 % reportaron ser «malos dormidores¼, y el 47,8 % y el 56,0 % presentaban algún grado de sintomatología ansiosa y depresiva, respectivamente. Se encontró también que, a medida que aumentaba la sintomatología ansioso-depresiva, la calidad de sueño empeoraba. Se evidenció así una relación significativa (p < 0,005) entre la calidad de sueño y los síntomas depresivos y ansiosos. Existe una tendencia significativa a que los universitarios del programa Beca 18 con sintomatología ansioso-depresiva experimenten concomitantemente un patrón de sueño de mala calidad.
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the association between anxious-depressive symptomatology and sleep quality in students of the Universidad de Piura (Perú) belonging to the "Beca 18" Program. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study that used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Zung's Self-Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Zung Depression Scale (SDS). Results: From the 293 participating scholarship students, 62.5% were "poor sleepers", wheras 47.8% and 56.0%, respectively, presented some degree of anxious and depressive symptomatology; as well, it was found that as the anxious-depressive symptomatology increased, the quality of the students' sleep worsened. Thus, a significant relationship (p(p<0.005) between sleep quality and anxiety and depressive symptoms, was documented. Conclusions: There is a significant tendency for Beca 18 university students with anxious-depressive symptoms to concomitantly experience a sleep pattern of poor quality.
