BackgroundThe persistently high prevalence of insomnia seriously affects the quality of life of all populations. Studies showed that state-trait anxiety, resilience and neuroticism are related to the occurrence of insomnia, while the research on the relationship among the four factors in college students is still insufficient. ObjectiveTo discuss the impact of neuroticism on insomnia among college students, and to examine the mediating role of state-trait anxiety and resilience in the relationship between neuroticism and insomnia, thus providing references for the intervention of insomnia in college students. MethodsFrom September to December 2020, simple random sampling techniques were utilized to select 1 416 students in a university in Sichuan province, and all subjects were assessed using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory-15 (CBF-PI-15) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Then Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to examine the correlation among the above four scales, and the mediating role of STAI and CD-RISC in the relationship between CBF-PI-15 neuroticism dimension and ISI was verified by Process macro mediation analysis. ResultsInsomnia was reported in 241/1 416 (17.02%) college students. The prevalence rate of insomnia in male students was higher than that in female students, with statistical difference (χ2=16.417, P<0.01). Total ISI score was positively correlated with CBF-PI-15 neuroticism dimension and total STAI score (r=0.127, 0.563, P<0.01), and negatively correlated with total CD-RISC score (r=-0.149, P<0.01). State-trait anxiety and resilience of college students had a chain mediation effect on the relationship between neuroticism and insomnia (indirect effect size was -0.011), and the size of direct effect of neuroticism on insomnia was 0.120, accounting for 75.00% of the total effect. ConclusionState-trait anxiety and resilience of college students exert a chain mediation effect on the relationship between neuroticism and insomnia, so the neuroticism causes an impact on insomnia both directly and indirectly through the chain mediating effect of state-trait anxiety and resilience.

Objective:To investigate the effect of intolerance of uncertainty (IU) on state worry, state anxiety, and galvanic skin response in college students with medium and low trait anxiety. Methods:The trait anxiety inventory (TAI) and the intolerance of uncertainty scale (IUS) were used to investigate 1 378 college students in Beijing. A total of 537 individuals with medium or low trait anxiety (TAI score ≤54) were selected, from which high IU individuals (IUS score ≤58) and low IU individuals (IUS score > 58) were selected and allocated to uncertain group ( n=28) and certain group ( n=28) according to gender, age, education level and IU score. The modified NPU paradigm task, the penn state worry questionnaire(PSWQ)and the brief state anxiety measurement(BSAM) were used to assess the subjects' worry and anxiety. The galvanic skin response of individuals completing the NPU paradigm task was recorded.SPSS 26.0 was used for a two factor analysis of variance (classification: high IU, low IU; group: uncertain group, certain group). Results:The results of the two factor analysis of variance showed that the interaction between individual state anxiety classification and group was not significant( F(1, 55)=0.05, P>0.05, η2=2.16). The main effect of classification was significant( F(1, 55)=24.17, P<0.05, η2=1143.01). The anxiety level of individuals with high IU was significantly lower than that of individuals with low IU( P<0.05). The group main effect was not significant( F(1, 55)=0.03, P>0.05, η2=1.45), and there was no significant difference between the uncertainty group and the certainty group in terms of worry( P>0.05). The interaction between individual state anxiety classification and group was significant ( F(1, 55)=4.38, P<0.05, η2=3.02). The simple analysis results showed that in the uncertain group, the state anxiety of individuals with high IU was significantly lower than that of individuals with low IU ( P<0.05). In the certain group, there was no significant difference in state anxiety between individuals with high and low IU ( P>0.05). The interaction between individual galvanic skin response classification and group was not significant ( F(1, 55)=0.03, P>0.05, η2=0.00). The classification main effect was not significant( F(1, 55)=0.07, P>0.05, η2=0.00), and there was no significant difference in skin electrical activity between individuals with high and low IU ( P>0.05). But the main effect of the group was significant( F(1, 55)=4.86, P<0.05, η2=0.03). The skin electrical activity of the uncertain group was higher than that of the certain group( P<0.05). Conclusion:In the college students with medium and low trait anxiety, IU is an effective predictor of individual state worry and state anxiety under uncertain conditions.

@#Introduction: Venepuncture procedure is painful and anxiety associated with venepuncture is common. There are many tools for assessing anxiety levels in an outpatient setting. Hence, this study is to compare the degree of agreement between State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) for measuring anxiety levels among adult patients before venepuncture procedure. Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted among patients while waiting for a venepuncture procedure in the Phlebotomy Unit, UiTMMC in April 2020. The Malay-validated version of the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used to assess the anxiety level. Differences between sets of data were plotted as described by Bland-Altman to determine the agreement between these two assessment tools. Results: A total of 330 patients participated in the study with a mean age of 46.34 ± 14.34 years old and gender was equally distributed. The scores of state-anxiety (STAI-S), trait-anxiety (STAI-T) and BAI score were 30.04 ± 20.74; 29.51 ± 19.11; and 40.98 ± 20.45, respectively. The score of anxiety using BAI was higher compared to STAI-S (p<0.001) and STAI-T (p<0.001). The mean difference between the STAI-S and BAI was -10.94 (95%CI: -53.01, 26.87) and between the STAI-T and BAI was -11.47 (95%CI: -42.26, 19.32). However, very few patients’ scores outside the 95% LOA for both differences. Conclusion: The STAI and BAI are concordances in measuring anxiety levels among these patients. However, the anxiety score using BAI was higher than STAI. Thus, both assessment tools can be used in clinical practice in measuring anxiety in the out-patients setting.

Introduction: Guided imagery (GI) is a mind–body intervention, in which individuals generate mental images of pleasant objects or eventsin their minds. These mental images produce positivity and alter the perception of headaches and other pain disorders. A review of literature suggests that GI is an effective psychological treatment for tension‑type headache (TTH) and state‑trait anxiety. Hence, the present study aimedto assess the efficacy of GI on TTH associated with state‑trait anxiety and to compare its efficacy with treatment as usual (TAU). Materials and Methods: Forty treatment‑naïve patients diagnosed with TTH were selected from the psychiatry outpatient department through purposivesampling method. The Henry Ford Hospital Headache Disability Inventory and the State‑Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults were administeredon all the patients for baseline data. Experimental group (n = 20) were given eight sessions of GI along with TAU for 2 months, whereas waitlistgroup (n = 20) were given only TAU. Results: ASignificant positive association was obtained between emotional and functional disabilityof headache and state‑trait anxiety at baseline. Postassessment findings demonstrated a significant reduction in severity and frequency of TTH, emotional and functional disability, and state‑trait anxiety in the experimental group receiving GI as compared to the waitlist group. Conclusion: Patients living with TTH more commonly suffer from state‑trait anxiety. Those patients who were given GI along with TAU for 2 months improved on severity and frequency of TTH, emotional and functional disability of TTH, and state‑trait anxiety more effectively than those patients receiving only TAU. Consequently, it can be said that GI is an effective treatment for TTH and state‑trait anxiety as compared to TA

Purpose: To compare the anxiety levels related to visual field testing and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with glaucoma. Methods: This prospective, comparative study was conducted on patients with glaucoma. The participants’ anxiety traits were assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI]. Before visual field testing on Humphrey visual field analyzer (HVF) and retinal nerve fiber analysis on OCT, the participants completed Form Y1 to measure the current pretest level or ‘State’ anxiety [pretest anxiety]. Immediately after testing, participants were administered the Form Y1 questionnaire to assess the induced anxiety level during the testing [Intratest anxiety]. Results: A total of 228 patients were enrolled with 152 participants in the HVF group and 76 in the OCT group. The mean age of the participants in the HVF group was 57.2 ± 20.8 years and in the OCT group was 56.8 ± 20 years. There was no significant difference in trait and pretest anxiety between the HVF group and the OCT group (P = 0.971 and P = 0.716). Intratest test anxiety score was slightly higher in the HVF group (HVF: 42.13 ± 10.63, OCT: 40.71 ± 9.76; P = 0.33). The anxiety scores were higher when the experience of previous HVF tests was <2 and least when the number of tests exceeded five. Conclusion: Automated perimetry induces slightly more anxiety than OCT, which may affect test performance. The measured anxiety reduces as patients gain familiarity with the test with experience. This adds credence to the recommendation of more frequent visual field testing in newly diagnosed glaucoma patients

Abstract 420 university students of Psychology and Law were evaluated in order to update the psychometric evidence of the State Anxiety Inventory - trait: STAI in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample consisted of men and women, the group of women being the largest, with an age range between 18 to 57 years old. The validation tests with expert judges allow obtaining an Aiken "V" greater than 0.80 and the values of the binomial test were significant with a p <.05. The item-test discriminative analysis tests obtained scores for the entire Inventory ranging from 0.334 to 0.679, with item 34 eliminated for not meeting the expected criteria. For convergent validity, its correlation with the CASE A30 questionnaire obtained for A-E an "r" of .320 and for A-R of .522, both with a p <.05. The construct validity was evaluated by means of the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, finding 4 independent scales: state anxiety, state well-being, trait anxiety and trait well-being. Reliability was obtained by calculating Cronbach's Alpha coefficient = 0.86 and McDonald's Omega coefficient = 0.89. Likewise, in the reliability by Guttman halves, values between 0.76 and 0.89 were found. Scales were established by sex and by age for the total population. The prevalence of anxiety in university students in Lima was 29.4 %, which is close to the data from China and Colombia, but it is higher than in England all in the time of COVID-19.

The current research aimed to assess the effect of the trait anxiety on the fear of Covid-19 mediated by resilience. For that, we counted on a convenience sample of 261 university students from Brazil. Participants completed a survey composed of the Fear of Covid-19 Scale (FC-19S), the Brief Resilience Scale, the Trait Anxiety Inventory, and demographic questions. Results from a simple mediation with 5000 bootstrap simulations supported the hypothesis that resilience mediates the link between the trait anxiety and fear of Covid-19 (β = .14; 95% C.I. = .027, .254). It was observed that resilience mediated around 35% of the link between the trait anxiety and the fear of Covid-19. In sum, we concluded that resilience plays an important role in maintaining people's mental health, which is especially relevant in troubled times like the pandemic.
Background: Stress has been seen to deteriorate normal physiological functions as well as the psychological functions of the brain. Medical students face a range of enduring normative stressors in the form of academic demands. This brings upon an amount of stress on the students which is related to the examinations and concerns with achieving high grades consequently referred to as academic-related stress. Thus, it becomes crucial to set upon a tool for measuring this stress in order to present methods for overcoming it. In the present study, one such method is evaluated by assessing the reaction time of first-year medical entrants. Material and Methods: The effect of stress on response time in 50 normal healthy medical students of Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur in the age group of 18 to 21 years was explored in the study. Visual Reaction Time was recorded through the computer program. Results: There was an increase in visual reaction time for the red color in both the sexes during stressful situations as compared to stress-free situations. While a decrease in Visual Reaction Time was seen for green color. A decreased auditory reaction time for both sexes was seen in stressful situations. Conclusion: The results revealed that stress within a limit facilitates positive feedback to Central Nervous System information processing consequently decreasing the reaction time.

Abstract Background: Anxiety is a state of worry caused by the anticipation of external or internal danger. Awareness During Anesthesia (ADA) is an unexpected memory recall during anesthesia. In this study, we aimed to determine the factors that affect preoperative anxiety and observe the incidence of ADA, as well as to determine the anxiety levels of these patients with a history of ADA. Methods: This study was planned to be prospective, observational, and cross-sectional. Patients in whom septoplasty was planned, who was admitted to the anesthesiology outpatients between March 2018 and September 2018, were ASA I-II, and aged 18-70 years were included in the study. The demographic characteristics of patients were recorded. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to determine anxiety during a preoperative evaluation. The modified Brice awareness score was used simultaneously to determine previous ADA. Results: The anxiety scores of patients who were conscious during anesthesia were higher than other patients. The mean STAI score was 40.85 ± 14.8 in the 799 patients who met the inclusion criteria of this study. When the anxiety scores were compared, the scores were higher in females than in males (p < 0.05). The mean STAI score was found as 40.3 ± 13.8 in patients who dreamed during anesthesia. Conclusion: It is important to determine the anxiety levels of patients in the preoperative period to prevent the associated complications. Preoperative anxiety, besides preventing ADA, should be dealt with in a multidisciplinary manner. ADA should be carefully questioned while evaluating previous anesthesia experiences.

Trait anxiety is a relatively stable anxiety tendency with individual differences in personality traits. The level of trait anxiety is related to gene polymorphism, oxidative stress, and brain volume and brain chemicals. At the same time, trait anxiety can affect an individual's cognitive performance, such as the extinction of fear memories and the process of threat-related information. Fully understanding the neurobiological factors of trait anxiety and its impacts on individual cognitive performance can help us cope with life events better and prevent or treat anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses more effectively.

Medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC) abnormalities have been observed in various anxiety disorders. However, the relationship between mOFC activity and anxiety among the healthy population has not been fully examined. Here, we conducted a resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) study with 56 healthy male adults from the Nathan Kline Institute/Rockland Sample (NKI-RS) to examine the relationship between the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) signals and trait anxiety across the whole brain. A Louvain method for module detection based on graph theory was further employed in the automated functional subdivision to explore subregional correlates of trait anxiety. The results showed that trait anxiety was related to fALFF in the mOFC. Additionally, the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) between the right subregions of the mOFC and the precuneus was correlated with trait anxiety. These findings provided evidence about the involvement of the mOFC in anxiety processing among the healthy population.

Objective To investigate the relationships between mindfulness, anxiety and depression in surface warship soldiers and the mediating role of attentional control. Methods Chinese versions of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory ( STAI ) , Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale ( CES-D ) , Attentional Control Scale ( ACS) and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire ( FFMQ) were used to survey 475 sur-face warship soldiers. Single factor analysis of variance, correlation analysis and path analysis were conducted by SPSS 20.0 and Amos18.0. Results ①The scores of the state anxiety, trait anxiety and depression in the soldiers and noncommissioned officers were significantly higher than that of commissioned officers (P<0.05) . As for the state anxiety, trait anxiety, depression and attentional focusing, there were statistically significant differences among different educational levels (P<0.05) . Specifically, the lower educational level, the higher anxiety and depression, the lower control focusing. ② There were significant positive correlations among at-tentional focusing (27.12±4.43),attentional shifting (29.43±3.78) and mindfulness (120.27±11.16,r=0.49-0.51,P<0.01). State anxiety (38.65±10.07) was negatively correlated with attentional focusing,atten-tional shifting and mindfulness (r=-0.32--0.54, P<0.01). Similar results were observed for trait anxiety (41.28±8.79) and depression (9.97±10.13). ③Attentional focusing partially mediated the relationships be-tween state anxiety, trait anxiety, depression and mindfulness. Conclusion Anxiety and depression of sol-diers have obvious relationships with kinds of soldiers' rank and education level. Mindfulness and attentional control are vital protective factors for marine army's mental health. This study indicates that mindfulness may improve individuals' attentional focusing and attentional shifting, and ameliorate negative moods such as anx-iety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based art therapy (MBAT) induces emotional relaxation in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, and is a treatment known to improve psychological stability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the treatment effects of MBAT for CAD patients. METHODS: A total of 44 CAD patients were selected as participants, 21 patients belonged to a MBAT group, and 23 patients belonged to the control group. The patients in the MBAT group were given 12 sessions of treatments. To measure depression and anxiety, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI) were used. Anger and anger expression were evaluated using the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI). The treatment results were analyzed using two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: The results showed that significant effects for groups, time, and interaction in the depression (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 23.15, P < 0.001]; between groups, [F(1,36) = 5.73, P = 0.022]), trait anxiety (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 13.23, P < 0.001]; between groups, [F(1,36) = 4.38, P = 0.043]), state anger (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 5.60, P = 0.023]), trait anger (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 6.93, P = 0.012]; within group, [F(1,36) = 4.73, P = 0.036]), anger control (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 8.41, P = 0.006]; within group, [F(1,36) = 9.41, P = 0.004]), anger out (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 6.88, P = 0.012]; within group, [F(1,36) = 13.17, P < 0.001]; between groups, [F(1,36) = 5.62, P = 0.023]), and anger in (interaction effect, [F(1,36) = 32.66, P < 0.001]; within group, [F(1,36) = 25.90, P < 0.001]; between groups, [F(1,36) = 12.44, P < 0.001]). CONCLUSION: MBAT can be seen as an effective treatment method that improves CAD patients' psychological stability. Evaluation of treatment effects using program development and large-scale research for future clinical application is needed.

Objective: To assess the interaction of chronotype with anxiety in patients with chronic primary insomnia. Methods: Sixty-four patients (50 women) with mean age 43.9±8.1 years were investigated with the Horne and Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results: Significant negative correlations of chronotype-MEQ score with STAI state-anxiety (r = -0.40, p < 0.05), STAI trait-anxiety (r = -0.40, p < 0.05), and STAI pre-sleep state anxiety (r = -0.30, p < 0.05) were observed. Eveningness preference was associated with higher trait, state, and pre-sleep state anxiety. Conclusions: These results suggest that chronotype may be an important parameter to identifying the origin and significance of a vicious anxiety-insomnia-depression cycle in patients with chronic primary insomnia.

BACKGROUND: It is important to evaluate preoperative anxiety and prepare sedation when performing dental surgery under local anesthesia. Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is useful for predicting preoperative anxiety. State anxiety is defined as a subjective feeling of nervousness. Reduction in the number of the state anxiety items (questions) will be clinically important in allowing us to predict anxiety more easily. METHODS: We analyzed the STAI responses from 1,252 patients who visited our institution to undergo dental surgery under local anesthesia. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted for 9 groups comprising anxiety level determinations using the STAI; we then developed a coefficient of determination and a regression formula. We searched for a group satisfying the largest number of requirements for regression expression while setting any necessary conditions for accurately predicting anxiety before dental surgery under local anesthesia. RESULTS: The regression expression from the group determined as normal for preoperative state anxiety was deemed the most suitable for predicting preoperative anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: It was possible to reduce the number of items in the STAI by focusing on “Preoperative anxiety before dental surgery.”

BACKGROUND:This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and anxiety pertaining to basic life support (BLS) and medical emergencies among interns in dental colleges of Mangalore city, Karnataka, India. METHODS:The study subjects comprised of interns who volunteered from the four dental col eges. The knowledge and attitude of interns were assessed using a 30-item questionnaire prepared based on the Basic Life Support Manual from American Heart Association and the anxiety of interns pertaining to BLS and medical emergencies were assessed using a State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Questionnaire. Chi-square test was performed on SPSS 21.0 (IBM Statistics, 2012) to determine statistical y significant differences (P<0.05) between assessed knowledge and anxiety. RESULTS:Out of 183 interns, 39.89% had below average knowledge. A total of 123 (67.21%) reported unavailability of professional training. The majority (180, 98.36%) felt the urgent need of training in basic life support procedures. Assessment of stress showed a total of 27.1% participants to be above high-stress level. Comparison of assessed knowledge and stress was found to be insignificant (P=0.983). CONCLUSION:There was an evident lack of knowledge pertaining to the management of medical emergencies among the interns. As oral health care providers moving out to the society, a focus should be placed on the training of dental interns with respect to Basic Life Support procedures.
