Abstract Current neurocognitive models define attention as a cognitive control system responsible for activation and hierarchical organization of the processes to elaborate information. It plays a key role in child cognitive performance and in school learning. It has been documented that children with greater attention capabilities show better performance in tasks that require cognitive control and better school performance. Therefore, it is important to have valid and reliable assessment instruments, which allow evaluating attentional performance in children with greater precision, and that are adapted to the sociocultural context of the target population. In line with these postulates, this paper presents a new instrument designed to evaluate visual attention in children called the Ring Test. The Ring Test is a visual discrimination test that has been constructed using Landolt's C optotype and following the tristimulus structure proposed by the Perception of Similarities and Differences (FACES) Test. Ring Test is a pencil and paper test that is made up of 60 blocks of stimuli each with triads of optotypes, where two optotypes are the same and one different. Subject's task is to find the different optotype in each stimulus triad and cross it out. This instrument brings into play focused and sustained attention and makes it possible to assess attentional effectiveness (AE), attentional efficiency (AF) and attentional performance (AP). Also, the Ring Test measures impulsivity (ICI) and net correct answers (NCA). The purpose of the study is to analyze psychometric properties for the Ring Test. Study's specific objectives were: (1) analyze the convergent validity between the Ring Test and the FACES Test, and (2) analyze the reliability of the Ring Test through the temporal stability. This study is framed in an instrumental design. The sample was composed of 86 schoolchildren, between 8 to 10 years. The results indicated that the Ring Test presented accurate values of convergent validity with the FACES test. The indicators of the Ring Test (AE, AF, AP, ICI and NCA) weighted for the complete execution of the test, showed the highest convergent validity indexes with the FACES Test (rho: from .55 to .62). AR and NCA for the complete execution of the test were the indicators that presented the highest validity (rho > .58), within the analyzed indicators. Also, the Ring Test presented a satisfactory temporal stability between the first and second measurement. It was observed that the most stable indicators are those that are calculated for the complete performance of the test (rho: from .56 to .76), and not for the partial times. AR and NCA calculated for the complete execution of the test were the indicators that denoted the greatest temporal stability (rho > .65). Another interesting aspect to highlight is that the Ring Test proved to be a valid and reliable instrument to measure attentional efficacy and impulsivity. AE evaluates the accuracy with which a child discriminates targeted stimuli within a set of similar stimuli and, consequently, can be considered a good indicator of attentional control. The ICI assesses the reflexivity or impulsiveness with which a subject performs a visual discrimination task. In sum, the results indicated that the Ring Test is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring visual attention in children. It is recommended to apply the complete test, not in time fractions, because the indicators calculated for the complete execution of the test showed greater convergent validity with the FACES test and greater temporal stability than the part-time indicators. It is concluded that the Ring Test is a contribution to the neuropsychological instruments available for the proper evaluation of visual attention in children.

Résumé

Abstract In this study, we investigated the influence of the olfactive stimulus on visual attention. Two groups of 30 subjects participated in two experiments. Both experiments presented two arrays of fruits stimulus intercalated by an olfactive intervention. The stimulus was received in the form of images by the first group and in the form of words by the second group. An eye-tracking device monitored the timekeeping of visual attention dispensed in each stimulus. The results showed that olfactive priming influenced visual attention in both cases but with a greater degree in the images stimulus group. This study shows for the first time that image information is more susceptible to priming olfactive information than wording information. This effect may be associated with the formation of mental images in working memory, aroused by fragrances.

Résumé

@#The question of whether dyslexic children have visual cognitive differences in terms of brain activity as compared to normal children remains unsolved. Here, we aimed to study the neuronal source activity during visual attentional processing reflected in the P300 Event-Related Potential (ERP) component, when being exposed to the different congruency of visual images on dyslexic children by utilizing an ERP. Twelve dyslexic and twelve non-dyslexic children in the range of age 8 to 11 years old took part in this study. They pressed button ‘1’ when they saw a congruence image of the animal in its natural habitat and button ‘2’ for incongruence animal images in non-natural habitat. The source localization of P300 was executed on the grand average waveform by utilising Standardised Low-Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (sLORETA) algorithm provided by Net Station software. The BA 19 of the left occipital lobe was the most activated during congruence and incongruence images in the dyslexic children. As for the control children, BA 18 and BA 17 of the occipital lobe were activated during congruence and incongruence images, respectively. In sum, there were no differences in source activity areas during both visual images in dyslexic children as compared to the control children, which brings us to a conclusion that the visual attentional activity in dyslexic children used the brain areas that are associated with visual characteristics rather than context differences.

Résumé

Objective:To investigate the value of event-related potential (ERP) P3 in the assessment of visual attention impairment in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD).Methods:Twenty-five patients with CSVD diagnosed in the Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University from July 2019 to December 2020 were selected as the CSVD group, while 25 healthy subjects who underwent physical examination in the same period were selected as the control group. The neuropsychological evaluation of CSVD group and control group was carried out by Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA), 7-items generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) and patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Magnetic resonance imaging brain white matter high signal of CSVD group and control group was carried out by Fazekas score. The amplitude and latency of ERP component P3 were measured by visual tristimulation Oddball experimental paradigm.SPSS 23.0 software was used for statistical analysis. The differences of amplitude and latency between the two groups were compared by repeated measurement analysis of variance.Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis were used to explore the correlation between P3 amplitude, latency and related scale scores.Results:(1)In the amplitude of P3, the interaction effect between group and stimulation was significant( F(2, 96)=3.922, P=0.023). The main effect between groups was significant( F(1, 46)=15.976, P<0.01). The main effect of stimulation was significant( F(2, 96)=86.212, P<0.01). Further simple effect analysis showed that compared with the control group((9.82±5.14)μV, (11.12±4.72)μV) the P3 amplitude induced by target stimulation ((6.59±4.22)μV, F(1, 48)=7.363, P=0.009) and novel stimulation ((7.08±3.91)μV, F(1, 48)=13.907, P=0.001) in CSVD group decreased significantly.(2)In the latency of P3, the main effect between groups was significant( F(1, 48)=4.870, P=0.032). The main effect of stimulation was significant( F(2, 96)=86.212, P<0.01). The interaction effect between group and stimulation was significant( F(2, 96)=4.561, P=0.013). The main effect of stimulation was significant( F(2, 96)=16.299, P<0.01). Further simple effect analysis showed that the P3 latency induced by novel stimulation in CSVD group was longer than that in control group( F(1, 48)=17.124, P<0.01). (3)P3 amplitude induced by target stimulation was positively correlated with MoCA score ( r=0.255, P=0.027). The P3 amplitude ( r=-0.502, P<0.01) and P3 latency ( r=-0.265, P=0.022) induced by novel stimulation were negatively correlated with Fazekas score. Conclusion:The speed and ability of patients with CSVD to process visual spatial information are impaired, especially for rare stimulation.ERP examination may be a rapid, objective and sensitive method for the diagnosis of visual attention impairment in patients with CSVD.

Résumé

@#Introduction: Children with dyslexia have disparate visual attention while reading varied structures of grapheme-phoneme that have different congruency. Exploring more related with attention and reading disability, we investigated the visual attention, topographic mapping and correlation of ages of children with dyslexia using ERP study. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional, non-interventional study was performed with simple randomization to select participants. A total of 24 children were recruited into two groups; control (n=12) and dyslexic (n=12) groups. 128-ERP net was used for ERP experiment. Congruent (true meaningful Malay, 80%) and incongruent (meaningless, 20%) words were used for stimuli. Participants pressed button ‘1' and ‘2' when they saw congruent and incongruent words, respectively. Amplitudes and latencies of P300 ERP component were analysed at 19 electrode sites in 10-20 system. Results: Dyslexics evoked significantly higher P300 amplitude at T6 and shorter P300 latency at Fp1 areas compared with the control group. Moreover, pseudo word stimulations showed a high P300 voltage distribution in the prefrontal and right occipital area in the dyslexics, whereas there was more activation in the bilateral occipito-parietal areas in the controls. Significantly moderate positive correlation was found in the control group at F3, F7 and negative correlation in the dyslexic group at T4 areas for P300 latency. Conclusion: Children with dyslexia have higher visual attention with fronto-central topographic distribution for true Malay words and prefrontal and right occipital areas for pseudo Malay words. Age correlation results indicated that attention is directly related to the brain maturity of children.

Résumé

Objective To construct an intelligent analysis system based on visual attention for diabetic retinopathy ( DR) assistant diagnosis and to realize the automatic screening and grading of fundus images of DR. Methods Total of 35126 DR fundus images were downloaded from the Diabetic Retinopathy Detection competition in the Data Modeling and Data Analysis Competition Platform (Kaggle),and 1200 fundus images were downloaded from the Messidor website. Firstly, according to the characteristics of DR fundus images,a series of preprocessing was carried out for retina images. Then,on the basis of VGG16 network, visual attention SENet module was introduced to improve the saliency of lesion features, and a deep convolution neural network SEVGG with complex network structure was generated. The network basically inherited some structural parameters of VGG16,and the parameters of SENet module were adjusted according to the basic network and training data set. Finally, the SEVGG network model was used to screen the DR fundus image, and the fundus image was divided into different levels according to the degree of lesions of DR in different periods. Configure the training platform and environment and perform algorithm performance verification experiments. Results The method proposed in this study was tested on different open standard datasets, and finally achieved high accuracy in image-based classification. The accuracy of 5 classification in Kaggle dataset was 83%,the sensitivity of lesion detection was 99. 86% and the specificity was 99. 63%. The accuracy rate of the 4 classification in the Messidor data set was up to 88%,the sensitivity of the lesion detection was 98. 17%,and the specificity was 96. 39%. The introduction of visual attention was more significant for the focus of the lesion, which helped the accurate detection of DR. Conclusions This method effectively avoids some shortcomings of traditional artificial feature extraction and fundus image classification, and is more accurate for lesion recognition. It is not only superior to the previous method, but also shows better robustness and generalization.

Orienting attention to a memorized scene using an endogenous cue positively favors processing, in a manner similar to endogenous cueing in perceptual tasks. In perception, endogenous and exogenous cues have different temporal dynamics. We investigated the efficacy and temporal dynamics of retrieval of information held in working memory using two types of retro-cue (endogenous and exogenous), presented in different intervals before the probed stimulus. Our results show that both cue types provide an equivalent benefit in accuracy and response time, which increases at longer cue-target-asynchrony. Our data indicate that performance is linked with cue validity and also with cue-target-asynchrony, but it is not linked with cue type, at least at the investigated intervals.

Abstract We investigate the retrieval of visual characteristics (color, form) of an object stored in visual working memory. Retro-cues based on location or on memorized characteristics were presented in a visual recognition task. Location retro-cues pointed out the place where the to be recognized feature (color or form) was at the memorized scene; color retro-cues cued the to be recognized form; form retro-cues cued color. Results show that spatial retro-cue allows a gain in color recognition but not in form recognition. Neither the color nor the form retro-cues provide significant improvement in recognition of form or color, respectively. Our results suggest that spatial information is more relevant to the recovery of the memorized information than the visual characteristics. We discuss the role of attention in the recovery process and the importance of the visual buffer as a visual working memory system.

Résumé

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with dyslexia experience reading difficulties, whereas their other cognitive abilities seem normal. The purpose of this study was to investigate the event-related potential (ERP) patterns of children with dyslexia during a target-detection task. METHODS: Seventeen children with dyslexia and 18 children without this disorder participated in this study. We evaluated their writing and reading ability, symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and intelligence quotient. ERPs were recorded while participants performed a target-detection task, and the peak amplitude and latency of P100 and P300 were analyzed. The lateral asymmetry index (LAI) was calculated for each ERP component. RESULTS: The dyslexic group exhibited longer reaction times and larger P100 amplitudes than the non-dyslexic group in the right hemisphere. The P100 latency was also significantly delayed in the right hemisphere of those in the dyslexic group compared with those in the non-dyslexic group. The P300 amplitude was larger in the right hemisphere compared with left hemisphere in the dyslexic group, whereas no interhemispheric differences were observed with respect to the P300 latency. The LAI for P100 showed a significant right hemispheric dominance, whereas the LAI for P100 was significantly correlated with the accuracy of target detection in children with dyslexia. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that right hemispheric dominance acts as an ancillary system that compensates for poor reading in children with dyslexia.

This study aimed to verify the relationship between visual attention span (VAS), phonemic awareness (PA) and reading performance in a sample of 48 students from the 1st, 3rd and 5th grade from a public elementary school in Sao Paulo. Children were assessed in three sessions through a battery of tasks, which included single word reading, VAS, PA, nonverbal intelligence, phonological memory and letter identification threshold. Results showed that the VAS and PA correlated with performance in reading from 1st to 5th grade, and they play a more important role at 1st grade, but remain relevant in 3rd and 5th grade, especially in the reading of nonwords and irregular words.

In this study we investigated phonological working memory, visual attention, and reading in 37 scholars (16 girls and 21 boys), fifth (mean age of 11.3 years) and sixth graders (mean age of 12.2 years). The participants were administered a reading subtest from an academic achievement test, a visual attention task (Posner paradigm), and three phonological working memory tests (words, pseudowords, and digits). Children from both grades had similar performances in reading and working memory for digits. Sixth graders had faster reaction times in the visual attention task, and they recalled more words and pseudowords than fifth graders. The results indicate the increase of processing speed and the development of working memory from 11 to 13 years, but the digit span test did not detect this change.

Résumé

Objective: To explore the temporal mechanism of attention in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and controls using a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task in which two letters (T1 and T2) were presented in close temporal proximity among distractors (attentional blink [AB]). Method: Thirty children aged between 9 and 13 years (12 with ADHD combined type and 18 controls) took part in the study. Both groups performed two kinds of RSVP task. In the single task, participants simply had to identify a target letter (T1), whereas in the dual task, they had to identify a target letter (T1) and a probe letter (T2). Results: The ADHD and control groups were equivalent in their single-task performance. However, in the dual-task condition, there were significant between-group differences in the rate of detection of the probe letter (T2) at lag + 1 and lag + 4. The ADHD group exhibited a larger overall AB compared with controls. Conclusion: Our findings provide support for a link between ADHD and attentional blink. .

Résumé

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop computerized attention tasks using smart devices for preschool aged children for assessment of auditory attention, visual attention, and attention shifting abilities. We then evaluated their construct and concurrent validity of them. METHODS: Sixty-seven 5- to 7-year-old children attending kindergarten were recruited. Newly developed computerized attention tasks and existing standardized attention tests such as Advanced Test of Attention (ATA) and Children's Color Trails Test-2 (CCTT-2) were successively administered. To examine the concurrent validity of these tasks, correlation coefficients between the participants' scores on the newly developed tasks and the scores on well-known measures were calculated for assessment of each component construct. We also examined the construct validity of the tasks using the developmental trend of the auditory attention, visual attention, and attention shifting abilities with age. RESULTS: Significant correlations were observed between the scores of computerized attention tasks using smart devices and corresponding scores of ATA-auditory task, visual task, and CCTT-2. And there were significant linear increasing trends of correct scores with age from 5 to 7 years. CONCLUSION: This study provides promising evidence for the utility of computerized attention tasks using smart devices for preschool-aged children.

Résumé

To Look and speak requires a dynamic synchronization of both visual attention and linguistic processing. This study explored patterns of visual attention in a group of Hindi speaking children and adults, as they generated sentences to real photographs. Photographs contained either a single human agent performing an intransitive action, an agent performing an action with an object or two actors involved in a mutual action in the presence of an object. The eye movements were recorded as participants generated sentences for each photograph, and several dependent measures were calculated. Eye movements to subject and verb regions in each picture revealed striking differences between children and adults as far as deployment of visual attention was concerned. Adults deployed significantly higher amount of attention to the verb region during the conceptualization process and throughout viewing compared to children. Children had higher number of fixations and saccades to different regions but did not attend to the regions in a stable manner over time. The results suggest that in a verb final language like Hindi, generating sentence requires first allocation of attention to the region denoting action, and children and adults differ from each other in this process.

A briefly presented peripheral flash is often mislocalized with a bias toward an attended object. The target mislocalization has been ascribed to the integration of location signals between a target and an attended object, and this results in the mislocalization of the target toward the attended object. It was unclear whether external objects that attract observer's attention were necessary to cause the target mislocalization. This study aimed at examining whether the target mislocalization occurred when the shift of observers' attention was induced by gaze cueing, in which observer's attention is shifted in the direction of other's gaze. This cueing paradigm requires no external object to attract attention, thus it enabled us to directly examine the necessity of external objects in the target mislocalization. Stimuli consisted of a pictorial face, a target, and a probe. First, the pictorial face was presented, and its gaze was shifted so as to look at either upper-right or upper-left. The target was successively presented for 50 msec. After a temporal interval of 0 or 2000 msec was inserted as a retention interval, the probe was presented below the target. The observers' task was to judge whether the target had appeared at the left or right side of the probe location. The target was significantly mislocalized in the direction of gaze shift only when the retention interval was 2000 msec. Moreover, reaction time for detecting a target was shorter at the gazed than non-gazed location. These results suggest that the mislocalization does not require external objects attracting attention. Neural signals of target location are possibly averaged with the attention-induced local change in neural signals, and this results in the target mislocalization toward the gazed location.

The blocking effect describes a circumstance which impedes function transfer among events that are part of a relation of spatiotemporal contiguity. However, theoretical and empirical evidence in stimulus class acquisition predicts that the blocking effect should not be observed even if some of the stimul11n the class are presented simultaneously as compound stimuli. The present study examines if additional A-EI training, whether prior or following training with a compound sample AX, constitutes a critical variable in the occurrence of the blocking effect. Performances in blocking tests by a group exposed to the blocking procedure, a group exposed to the backward blocking procedure and a control group were compared. Findings suggest that additional training with one member of the compound does not impede responding to all stimuli as members of the class. Instances where the blocking effect was observed are interpreted in terms of configural and elemental types of responding.

Résumé

A percepção visual depende do arcabouço sensorial e do processamento atencional.

Visual perception depends on the sensory framework and on attentional processing. This study examined the effects of the size, eccentricity and predictability of a visual stimulus on manual reaction time (RT). In experiment 1 (n=8), a target was presented randomly in one of four different eccentricities, with three possible sizes. Experiment 2 (n=12) had a similar configuration but a cue indicated the higher predictability (70%) of target presentation quadrant. The results showed an increase in RT as a function of target eccentricity, and a decrease in RT with increasing target size or accuracy of the cue. An analysis of interaction effects suggests an overlay of attentional and purely sensory mechanisms sharing common stages of visual processing.

Résumé

ObjectiveTo investigate the neural mechanism of processing the salient target during the visual search task with spatiotemporal patterns of event-related potential(ERP).MethodsSixteen subjects were asked to judge the existence of a low or high salient target from 4 items,in which one distractor might be also salient or not.A two-way repeated-measure ANOVA was carried out for behavioral performance and ERP data( distractor saliency:YES,NO)*( target:none, low salient, high salient).ResultsSignificant interaction was found between target and distractor for the reaction time (F( 1.99,29.79) =21.56,P=0.00).For the low salient target, significant difference of reaction time was found between the YES (552.57 ± 82.32 ms) and NO (540.47 ± 75.68 ms)of distractor saliency( t (15) =- 2.489,P =0.025 ).However, such difference of reaction time was not significant for the high salient target. The statistical parametric mapping of F-value of ERP suggested the effect of the distractor saliency revealed in the right fronto-parietal-temporal areas related to stimulus novelty and the effect of the target saliency appeared in the parietal-occipital regions related to visual processing during the same stage ( 350 ~ 450ms ).The significant interaction occurred in the left temporal regions (450 ~ 600 ms ) related to stimulus familiarity and its classification.ConclusionDue to both mechanisms of the parallel processing for the target and the distractor during the perceptual stage and the effective classification of the familiar network within left hemisphere during the stage of pattern classification, the salient target can be processed quickly in spite of the interference from the salient distractor.

Some studies suggest the existence of distinct maturation moments of the attentional system. This study investigated the selection patterns of visual information through a perceptual load task performed by three age groups: children, adults and elderly people. In general, the obtained results indicate a decrease of the efficiency in the process of information selection under low perceptual load in the group of elderly people, and a decrease of the selection efficiency under conditions of high and low perceptual load in the group composed by children. The results suggest the existence of specific patterns in the selection of visual information in relation to age and the perceptual load to be processed by the visual system.

Résumé

Three experiments were performed to investigate the distribution of attention across the visual field and the possibility of attentional resources to be more concentrated inside an abrupt onset frame (cue). The participants performed a temporal order judgment task of two letters presented in sequence; one letter presented inside and the other outside the frame. The results showed that the information presented inside the frame had its perceptual latency shortened in relation to the information presented outside the frame in experimental conditions where the frame orientation, the distance between the two letters and the cue onset time were manipulated. The advantage of the information presented inside the frame was attributed to the displacement of attention to the area delimited by the frame. The results contribute to the understanding of visual perception, showing that attentional resources may be redistributed inside the borders of a geometric figure.
