BACKGROUND:Trunk pressure biofeedback is considered a reliable indicator for assessing core muscle strength. It not only reflects the status of an individual's trunk strength but also has a close relationship with the function of respiratory muscles. OBJECTIVE:To explore the correlation between trunk pressure biofeedback and diaphragmatic function in young adults. METHODS:A total of 80 young adults from Shangrao Normal University,China were enrolled, including 34 males and 46 females, with an average age of(19.83±1.45)years.Diaphragmatic thickness and mobility were measured using a bedside musculoskeletal ultrasound system.Maximum inspiratory pressure was determined using a portable pulmonary function tester.Lumbar and abdominal pressures in prone and supine positions were assessed using a pressure biofeedback device. The degree of correlation between trunk pressure biofeedback and diaphragmatic function was determined using Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients.A multivariate linear regression analysis was used to determine predictive models for diaphragmatic function. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Grouped by sex, age, height, body mass, trunk pressure biofeedback values, diaphragm thickness during quiet inspiration and expiration, diaphragmatic thickening ratio during quiet breathing, diaphragmatic thickness during deep inspiration and expiration, diaphragmatic thickening ratio during deep breathing, diaphragmatic mobility during deep inspiration, and maximum inspiratory pressure were higher in the male group than the female group(all P<0.05).Grouped by physical activity level, trunk pressure biofeedback values and maximum inspiratory pressure were lower in the sedentary group than in the exercise group(both P<0.05).Both anterior and posterior trunk pressure biofeedback were significantly correlated with diaphragmatic thickness during quiet inspiration and expiration, diaphragmatic thickening ratio during quiet breathing, diaphragmatic thickness during deep inspiration and expiration, diaphragmatic thickening ratio during deep breathing, diaphragmatic mobility during deep inspiration, and maximum inspiratory pressure(all P<0.01).Anterior trunk pressure biofeedback entered the predictive model for diaphragmatic thickness during quiet inspiration(F=27.228,P<0.001),during deep inspiration(F=38.615,P<0.001),and along with age for diaphragmatic mobility during deep inspiration(F=15.408,P<0.001).Anterior trunk pressure biofeedback, body mass, and age entered the predictive model for maximum inspiratory pressure(F=22.314,P<0.001).To conclude, there is a strong correlation between trunk pressure biofeedback and diaphragmatic thickness, diaphragmatic mobility, and maximum inspiratory pressure. The rapid and simple measurement of trunk pressure biofeedback can serve as a method for screening the diaphragmatic function in healthy young adults.

Résumé

Introduction: sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing a boom in the number of adolescents and young adults living with HIV (AYALHIV). Existing HIV intervention programs are mainly for children and adults living with HIV, with little attention paid to AYALHIV. Characterizing this population is necessary for planning, and designing, AYALHIV-centered HIV intervention programs. Methods: a retrospective single-center, hospital-based chart review was conducted at the largest HIV clinic in Ghana. We examined routinely collected data for AYALHIV (aged 10-24 years) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) for at least 1 year and in active care from 1st January to 31st December 2019. Data was collected using a structured data extraction form. The Chi-square and the Student´s t-test were used to compare characteristics between adolescents and young adults. Results: of 252 AYALHIV, 68% (172/252) were adolescents with a median age of 17 years (IQR 13-19); 32% were young adults with a median age of 22 years (IQR: 20-24). Most (56.7% (143/252)) AYALHIV were female. Almost 40% were orphans. Eighty-six percent of AYALHIV had HIV type I infection. The commonest mode of HIV acquisition among adolescents was vertical transmission (70.5%) and that among young adults was via unprotected sex (31.3%). 88% of AYALHIV were on non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors-based regimen. The viral suppression rate among AYALHIV was 78%. Conclusion: the study shows there is a growing population of AYALHIV most of which are adolescents. About two-fifths were orphans. Policymakers and HIV programs should ensure AYALHIV-centred interventions are developed for this vulnerable population.

Résumé

ABSTRACT Purpose The purpose of the study was to develop the Tamil Matrix Sentence Test (TMST) and evaluate the performance of a group of young adults with normal hearing on the developed test. The developed sentences were also administered at varying intensities to obtain a performance-intensity (PI) function. Methods A base matrix with 10 sentences containing 5 words each with a total of 50 words was used to develop the TMST. The sentences had a fixed semantic sentence structure of Tamil language in the order of noun, number, adjective, object and verb. The developed test consisted of 30 lists with 10 sentences in each list. The performance of 60 young adults with normal hearing aged 18 to 24 years across the 30 lists were compared for list equivalency. To obtain the PI function the sentences were administered on 20 young adults with normal hearing at intensities from 20 dB HL to 100 dB HL in 10 dB increments. The performance across the intensity levels were compared. Results The 30 lists of TMST were found to be acoustically equivalent. However, few lists showed significant difference in the scores obtained on them compared to the rest of the lists. The PI function revealed a saturation in performance beyond 40 dB HL. Conclusion From the results it was construed that TMST can be used to evaluate the speech identification abilities of Tamil speaking listeners. Multiple lists offer the advantage of retesting without the influence of practice or listeners memorizing the test material.

Résumé

Abstract Medium chain acyl-coA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD), the most common fatty acid oxidation disorder, has been regarded as a relatively benign condition with low risk of mortality in patients with a known diagnosis, if adequate caloric intake is met. However, inadequate energy provision, as occurs in eating disorders, significantly amplifies the risk of metabolic decompensation. This case series describes four patients with MCADD and a concomitant eating disorder and aims to raise awareness of the potentially under-recognised coexistence of these conditions. All patients were female with signs of disordered eating in adolescence and young adulthood though latency in diagnosis was apparent. Three of the patients had low body mass index (BMI) and the other was overweight. Metabolic decompensation and hospitalisation occurred in three of four patients secondary to extreme risk-taking behaviour with caloric restriction. The coexistence of MCADD and eating disorders is of significant concern, placing the patient at substantial risk of decompensation in an otherwise relatively stable metabolic condition. Awareness of disordered eating in this population is paramount, as early recognition of signs and symptoms of eating disorders in the MCADD population may facilitate prompt intervention and avoidance of morbidity and potential mortality.

Abstract: Eating disorders are one of the most frequent chronic diseases in adolescents and young women. In Mexico, percentages from 5 to 18% of risk eating behaviors have been found in samples of female university students (Unikel-Santoncini, et al., 2004). On the other hand, resilience is defined as a construct that includes certain phenomena that consist of the individual's adequate adaptation to traumatic situations, extreme deprivation, serious threats, or high stress (González-Arratia, 2008, in Camacho Valadez, 2016). This research examines the relationship between resilience and risk eating behaviors through the application of the EAT-26 and RESI-M instruments to 201 Mexican women, with an average age of 22 years. A Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis was performed, which showed that those women with higher levels of resilience showed less risk eating behaviors. It's proposed to carry out the same study with younger populations, as well as with male participants.

Résumé

ABSTRACT Introduction: Improving survival of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in adult patients has been a challenge. Despite intensive chemotherapy treatment, overall survival is poor. However, several studies demonstrate that young adult patients have better survival when treated with pediatric-based intensive regimens. Considering these results, We decided to treat newly diagnosed ALL patients according to age and risk factors. The goal of this study was to describe the results of this intensive chemotherapy treatment approach for ALL adult patients diagnosed at our institution. Methods: Fifty-eight ALL patients, diagnosed from 2004 to 2013, were included in the analysis. Patients were assigned to either the St. Jude Total Therapy XIIIB high-risk arm (St Jude) or the CALGB 8811 (CALGB). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used for the survival analyses and the Cox proportional hazard regression, for multivariable analysis. Results: The overall survival was 22.9% at 10 years. The St. Jude improved survival, compared to the CALGB (p = 0.007), with 32.6% vs. 7.4% survival rate at 10 years. However, no survival benefit was found for patients younger than 20 years old (p = 0.32). The multivariable analysis demonstrated that undetectable minimal residual disease (MRD) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) had beneficial impact on survival (p = 0.0007 and p = 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: ALL is a disease of poor prognosis for adults. The joint effort to standardize treatment and seek solutions is the way to start improving this scenario.

Résumé

ABSTRACT Introduction: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) presents a poor prognosis in adults. The adoption of pediatric protocols has been changing this scenario, especially for adolescents and young adults (AYA). Objective and method: We aimed to evaluate a consecutive series of patients treated at the State Institute of Hematology of Rio de Janeiro between 2012 and 2020, focusing on the AYA subgroup. Result: The B-ALL was the most frequent subtype (81.6%) and AYA, the predominant age group (57.7%). The median overall survival (OS) was 9.4 months. High early mortality was observed and sepsis was the main cause of death. Better OS results were noted in AYA, in comparison to over 39y (13.3 × 6.2 months, respectively), the Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) being the protocol of choice in this group. Conclusion: The use of the pediatric protocol seems to improve the OS of AYA, however, high rates of deaths from infection were observed, demonstrating the need for advances in the Brazilian public system clinical support.

Résumé

Background: Heart rate recovery at 1st min (HRR 1 min) after graded treadmill exercise (GTX) is a predictor of parasympathetic function. Impaired HRR 1 min and obesity are strong predictors of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disorders. This study is done to asses HRR 1 min on apparently healthy obese young adults with body mass index (BMI) ?30, without any other metabolic syndrome components. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the parasympathetic function by estimating HRR 1 min after exercise in apparently healthy obese young adults of 18–30 years of age without any metabolic syndrome components and is compared with age- and gender-matched controls with normal BMI. Materials and Methods: Fifty obese young adults with BMI ?30 without any other metabolic syndrome component and 50 age- and gender-matched controls with BMI ?24.9 were selected and subjected to GTX according to modified Bruce protocol. Maximum heart rate reached during exercise (HRmax) and heart rate at 1st min of recovery phase (HR1min) were recorded. HRR 1 min was calculated as HRmax-HR1min and was analyzed. Results: This study showed significantly attenuated HRR 1 min in obese young adults compared to age- and gender-matched controls (mean 24.02 ± 8.87 vs. 42.42 ± 5.3, P < 0.001). Conclusion: HRR 1 min was significantly decreased in obese young adults, indicating attenuated parasympathetic function, who are at higher risk of developing chronic cardiovascular and other metabolic disorders.

Résumé

Background: In the context of the rising trend of overweight and obesity, young people are more concerned about their weight. This study investigates the association between measured Body Mass Index (BMI), self-perception of body weight and weight change behavior among university students. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed a sample of 415 university students aged 18-23 years residing in urban areas of Anand. Measures included weight, height, BMI, body weight perception and weight change behavior. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, the student’s t-test and Chi-square test. Results: About 36.1% of the participants misclassified their weight category. More women than men felt overweight in relation to their actual body shape. Among normal-weight or underweight BMI participants, 44.4% of females and 31.8% of males were inappropriately trying to lose weight. Conclusions: The study showed a higher prevalence of weight perception and inappropriate weight change behaviour. It also observed that the correct perception of body weight influences the willingness to lose or gain weight. It is important to consider these issues while designing a public health campaign targeting obesi-ty and healthy lifestyles.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged sitting and a sedentary lifestyle may result in hamstring shortness. A decline in regular physical activity could lead to a decrease in the flexibility of the muscle in a younger adult. Increasing hamstring muscle flexibility could decrease the possibility of injuries and prevent low back pain. The application of high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) has proved to be innumerable benefits for many conditions. However, to date, no published research is available on the effectiveness of this therapy in improving hamstring muscle length in healthy young adults. This article describes the study protocol for investigating the benefits of HILT in treating hamstring muscle tightness among young adults. METHODS: 136 healthy young individuals will be recruited, by purposive sampling method, to participate in a randomized, single-blinded, sham-controlled study. Recruited participants will be randomly divided into two groups, the active HILT group, and the sham HILT group. The treatment duration will be 8-10 minutes per session, on both lower limbs, for alternate days a week, for two weeks. The active knee extension test and sit-toe and touch test are the outcome measures that will be recorded at baseline, end of the 2-week post-intervention period. The p-value ≤0.05 will be considered statistically significant. DISCUSSION: The study findings will provide the data to determine whether HILT would be a future non-pharmacological non-invasive intervention to reduce hamstring muscle tightness among young adults. TRIAL REGISTRY: Clinical Trials Registry NCT05077761.

Introduction: Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is the use of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) to reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection after potential risk exposure. ARV-based interventions are recommended as part of combination HIV prevention, especially for key populations. Objective: The aim of this study was to measure knowledge about PEP among university students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on university students from the Health, Education, Exact, and Human Sciences Departments of the State University of Bahia, Brazil. Sociodemographic data, information on sexual behavior, and knowledge of PEP were collected through a standardized self-applied questionnaire. Results: We analyzed 1580 questionnaires, of which 66.7% (1024/1536) were from females, with a mean age of 23.9 (±6.5) years, and 35.4% (448/1264) reported irregular use of condoms and regular use was not associated with being students from the health area (p=0.44, OR 0.90, 95%CI 0.691.17). Regarding PEP, 28.5% (449/1578) had known about it and their knowledge was statistically associated with men who have sex with men (MSM) (p<0.01, OR 3.92, 95%CI 2.456.28). It was noted that 94.0% (1485/1579) did not know the time limit for starting PEP, 95.1% (1500/1578) did not know the duration of prophylaxis, and 91.1% (1437/1577) did not know where to get PEP. Finally, 0.4% (7/1578) referred to previous use and 96.6% (1488/1540) would not change their sexual behavior after knowing about PEP. Conclusion: PEP is a prevention strategy available for decades and is safe, effective, and cost-effective. However, it is underutilized and a lack of knowledge on PEP is one of the main obstacles to access. Among university students, there is a limited knowledge about PEP acting as a barrier in preventing new infections, which shows the need for interventions based on sexual-health education, stimulating the reduction of risk behaviors and disseminating information about combination prevention.

The importance of the relationship between young people and their parental figures for adaptative de-velopment has been supported by literature, namely prosocial capacities and less involvement in risk beha-viors. The quality of peer relationships may also play a protective role regarding alcohol consumption. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of parenting styles and peer attachment on the reasons for alcohol consumption. Participants were 1.044 university stu-dents of both sexes, between 18 and 25 years of age (m = 19.78; sd = 1.68). For data collection, a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Parenting Styles & Dimensions Questionnaire: Short Version (psdq), the Inventory of Peer and Parental Attachment (ippa-peer), the Drinking Motives Questionnaire Revised (dmq-r), and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (audit) were used. The results reveal a positive predictive effect of negative parenting styles (authoritarian and permissive) and alienation with peers on the reasons for alcohol consumption and a negative predictive impact on democratic parenting style and peer attachment ba-sed on communication and trust. Women have a better relational quality with their peers compared to males. Men have a greater diversity of reasons for consuming alcohol. Results are discussed considering the relevance of parenting styles, the quality of peer relationships in personal development, and the motivations of young adults, in a university context, for risk-taking behavior.

Résumé

Objective:To investigate the risk factors for ruptured saccular intracranial aneurysms in young adults. Methods:Young patients with saccular intracranial aneurysm admitted to the First People's Hospital of Kashgar Region from February 2017 to November 2022 were retrospectively included. The demographic and clinical data from patients were collected. Risk factors of ruptured intracranial aneurysm were determined by univariate and multivariate regression analysis. Results:A total of 151 young patients with saccular intracranial aneurysm were enrolled, including 94 in the ruptured group (62.2%) and 57 in the unruptured group (37.8%). There were 70 males (46.4%) and 81 females (53.6%), with a median age of 41 years (interquartile range, 36-42 years). Univariate analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the proportion of male and triglycerides level between the ruptured group and the unruptured group (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that males (odds ratio [ OR] 5.546, 95% confidence interval [ CI] 1.946-15.807; P=0.001), lower triglycerides ( OR 0.244, 95% CI 0.219-0.511; P<0.001), and aneurysms located in the anterior cerebral artery/anterior communicating artery ( OR 4.207, 95% CI 1.361-13.004; P=0.013) and middle cerebral artery ( OR 3.277, 95% CI 1.091-9.848; P=0.034) were the independent risk factors for intracranial aneurysm rupture. Conclusions:Male and lower triglycerides are the risk factors for ruptured saccular intracranial aneurysms in young adults. In addition, intracranial aneurysms located in the anterior cerebral artery/anterior communicating artery and middle cerebral artery are more prone to rupture.

Résumé

Young patients have unique characteristics in terms of body structure and fertility needs. There is currently no consensus on the definition and treatment of inguinal hernia in adolescents and young adults. Biodegradable meshes are materials derived from homologous or heterologous tissues, which retain the three-dimensional fiber structure containing collagen after special processing. They can meet the requirements of high comfort and low impact on fertility while ensuring repair strength. The authors define inguinal hernia in young adults based on recent research results and summarize the application effect of biological meshes.

Résumé

@#Introduction: Excessive sugar consumption is a major global health concerns as it plays a significant role in the development of non-communicable diseases. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) are a major source of added sugar in daily life that can lead to many health concerns. Understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to SSB intake is a key component of healthy beverage intake. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of SSBs intake and the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of university students during the recovery phase of COVID-19 in 2022. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 176 young adults aged 18-26 years old who completed a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic and KAP data related to SSBs. Descriptive statistics were outlined, and a chi-square test was conducted to compare categorical variables. Results: Based on the frequency of beverage intake, sugar-sweetened coffee, or tea (39.8%) was the most frequently consumed SSB daily (at least once daily) while regular soft drink (52.3%) was the most consumed SSB among the participants on a weekly basis (≤6 times per week). Overall, the majority of university students had a positive attitude towards SSB intake (90.6%) but poor knowledge (51.7%) and poor practice (80.7%) levels. Gender and weight status were significantly related to the attitude and knowledge scores (p< 0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of SSB intake among young adults should be addressed. Comprehensive education and intervention are vital to improving the knowledge and practice about proper SSB intake as part of healthy eating lifestyles.
