Resumen Introducción : Las funciones ejecutivas y la meta cognición se integran para la gestión de recursos inte lectuales, en estrecha relación con la inteligencia, su funcionamiento y resultados, especialmente interesan te para comprender la expresión y desarrollo, más o menos óptimos, de la alta capacidad intelectual (ACI). El Objetivo del trabajo es conocer la relación entre las funciones ejecutivas (y componentes) y la metacognición (y componentes) en escolares con ACI. Materiales y Métodos : Las medidas de funcionamien to y ejecutivo, metacognitivo y de perfeccionismo ex traídas en una muestra de n= 147 escolares con ACI son analizadas estadísticamente mediante el Path análisis. Resultados : Se obtiene un modelo ajustado en el que se relacionan los distintos componentes ejecutivos con los metacognitivos. Discusión : Se concluye y discute el modelo integrador entre función ejecutiva y metacognición y su papel me diador, como endofenotipo entre la dotación genética y la expresión de rendimiento de los recursos, sugiriendo la transferencia de resultados a la educación de la alta capacidad intelectual para la óptima y ética expresión del alto potencial.


Abstract Introduction : Executive functions and Metacogni tion are integrated for the management of intellectual resources in close relation to intelligence its function ing and results; they are specially interesting for un derstanding the expression and development of high intellectual abilility (HIA). The aim of the study is to find out the relationship between executive functions (and components) and metacognition (and components) in schoolchildren with HIA. Materials and Method : Measures of executive and metacognitive functioning and perfectionism were ex tracted from a sample of n= 147 schoolchildren with HIA. Results : statistical analyses using Path analysis, of fered an adjusted model in which the different ex ecutive components are related to the metacognitive components. Discussion : We conclude and discuss the integrative model between executive function and metacognition and its mediating role as an endophenotype between genetic endowment and the expression of resource performance, suggesting the transfer of results to the education of high intellectual ability for the optimal and ethical expression of high potential.

Abstract People with cognitive disabilities face multiple challenges concerning oral health and frequently show oral tissue decay because of the barriers society imposes upon them, and due to financial issues, professional and family lack of knowledge, limitations regarding access to services, lack of empowering-driven actions, among others. Positive knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding oral health, developed during the course of a lifetime, help in preserving good health. The aim of the current study is to describe oral health knowledge, attitudes and practices in people with cognitive disabilities participating in the Institutional Program for the Inclusion of People with Cognitive Disabilities in Higher Education at the University of Costa Rica (PROIN, in Spanish), during 2021. A descriptive study with mixed focus was performed; a representative sample comprised of 86 students enrolled in PROIN was used for the quantitative approach, while the qualitative approach used a criteria sample along with an opinion sample, limiting size due to information overload. The survey, along with its corresponding questionnaire and the semi-structured interview, were used as data gathering techniques. It was evidenced that certain issues need to be readdressed, such as bleeding gums, the importance of preserving dental pieces, as well, the practice of flossing, which many students expressed difficulties doing. Good attitudes were found, such as dentist visits; however, access barriers for this population must be overthrown. This article showed the importance of training professionals in disabilities as well as developing oral health promotion programs aimed at people with cognitive disabilities.


Resumen La población con discapacidad cognitiva enfrenta múltiples retos en cuanto a la salud oral, presentado comúnmente un deterioro de los tejidos orales; esto como consecuencia a las barreras impuestas por la sociedad, factores económicos, desconocimiento de los profesionales y familiares, limitaciones en el acceso a la atención, falta de acciones para fomentar su autonomía, entre otras. Los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas favorables en salud oral ayudan a conservar una buena salud, los cuales se desarrollan a lo largo de la vida. El objetivo del presente estudio es describir los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas de salud oral en las personas con discapacidad cognitiva que participaron en el Programa Institucional de Inclusión de Personas con Discapacidad Cognitiva a la Educación Superior de la Universidad de Costa Rica (PROIN) durante el año 2021. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo con un enfoque mixto, para el enfoque cuantitativo se utilizó una muestra representativa de 86 estudiantes matriculados en PROIN y para la parte cualitativa se utilizó una muestra por criterio con un muestreo opinático, estableciendo el tamaño por saturación de la información. Se utilizaron como técnicas de recolección de datos la encuesta con su respectivo cuestionario y la entrevista semiestructurada. Se evidenció que existen temas que se deben reforzar, como lo es el sangrado de encías, la importancia de conservar las piezas dentales, así como la práctica de uso de hilo dental, donde la mayoría de los estudiantes expresaron tener dificultades para su utilización. Además, se encontró buenas actitudes con respecto a la visita al odontólogo, sin embargo, se debe derribar barreras de acceso que se presentan para esta población. Este estudio demostró la necesidad de capacitar a los profesionales en el tema de discapacidad y desarrollar programas de promoción de la salud oral específicos para personas con discapacidad cognitiva.

Clinical studies have found that neonatal sevoflurane exposure can increase the risk of cognitive dysfunction. However, recent studies have found that it can exhibit neuroprotective effects in some situations. In this study, we aimed to explore the effects of sevoflurane neonatal exposure in rats. A total of 144 rat pups (72 males and 72 females) were assigned to six groups and separately according to sevoflurane exposure of different times on the seventh day after birth. Blood gas analysis and western blot detection in the hippocampus were conducted after exposure. The Morris water maze test was conducted on the 32nd to 38th days after birth. The expression of PSD95 and synaptophysin in the hippocampus was detected after the Morris water maze test. We found that neonatal exposure to sevoflurane promoted apoptosis in the hippocampus, and Bax and caspase-3 were increased in a dose-dependent manner. The 2-h exposure had the greatest effects on cognitive dysfunction. However, with the extension of exposure time to 6 h, the effects on cognitive function were partly compensated. In addition, sevoflurane exposure decreased synaptogenesis in the hippocampus. However, as the exposure time was extended, the suppression of synaptogenesis was attenuated. In conclusion, neonatal sevoflurane exposure exhibited duration-dependent effects on cognitive function via Bax-caspase-3-dependent apoptosis and bidirectional effects on synaptogenesis in rats.

Introducción Los factores de riesgo psicosociales como determinantes de la salud en el trabajo pueden afectar tanto al bienestar físico como al bienestar psíquico del trabajador. En los sistemas de formación que incluyen contenidos cognitivo-preventivos, funcionan mejor cuando la construcción del conocimiento está basada en el neuroaprendizaje. El objetivo del estudio fue comparar el grado de procesamiento de contenidos con inserción de frases disuasivas (grupo A) versus inserción de frases persuasivas (grupo B), como efecto de una capacitación con aproximación al neuroaprendizaje de la salud psicosocial en el trabajo de un grupo de profesionales con seguro sanitario de la Amazonía peruana. Métodos Diseño experimental con pre/posprueba, que incluyó dos grupos experimentales más un grupo de control: n = 48 sujetos en total, 16 por cada grupo, con edades entre 22 y 36 años. La capacitación se desarrolló entre diciembre de 2018 y enero de 2019 con una duración de 18 horas, espaciadas en seis semanas. Para la recogida de datos se utilizó un registro previamente validado por cinco expertos. Resultados La distribución de datos en los grupos fue adecuada tanto en preprueba como en posprueba, excepto en posprueba del grupo B (p = 0,002). En el grupo control los resultados del procesamiento de contenidos, tanto preprueba como en posprueba, se mantuvieron similares (p = 0,667). El procesamiento de contenidos sobre salud psicosocial en el trabajo en posprueba fue significativamente diferente entre los grupos de intervención y el grupo control (p = 0,001), distinguiéndose el procesamiento de contenidos con inserción de frases disuasivas. Conclusiones Los resultados indican que la capacitación con aproximación al neuroaprendizaje, puede mejorar el procesamiento de contenidos con inserción de frases disuasivas para el cumplimiento de normativas orientadas a promover la salud psicosocial en el trabajo.


Introduction Psychosocial risk factors as determinants of health at work can affect both the physical and psychological well-being of the worker. Training systems that include cognitive-preventive content work best when knowledge construction is based on neurolearning. The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of content processing with the insertion of deterrent (group A) versus persuasive sentences (group B) as an effect of a training with a neurolearning approach to psychosocial health in the work of a group of professionals with health insurance in the Peruvian Amazon. Methods Experimental design with pre-/post-test, including two experimental groups plus a control group, n = 48 subjects in total and 16 per group, aged 22-36 years. The training took place between December 2018 and January 2019 with a duration of 18 hours spaced over six weeks. A register previously validated by five experts was used for data collection. Results The distribution of data in the groups was adequate in both pre-test and post-test, except in post-test in group "B" (p = 0.002). In the control group, the results of content processing in both pre-test and post-test remained similar (p = 0.667). The processing of psychosocial occupational health content in the post-test was significantly different between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.001), distinguishing the processing of content with the insertion of deterrent phrases. Conclusions The results indicate that training with a neurolearning approach can improve the processing of content with the insertion of deterrent phrases for compliance with regulations aimed at promoting psychosocial health at work.

RESUMEN Los inhibidores de la bomba de protones (IBP) son los medicamentos más potentes para inhibir la secreción gástrica ácida, y se utilizan en el tratamiento de la mayor parte de las afecciones inflamatorias de la mucosa gástrica. Forman parte de los fármacos más recetados y sobreprescritos en todo el mundo; por ejemplo, en los Estados Unidos, según la Encuesta nacional de salud y nutrición, casi duplicaron su uso en los adultos de 40 años de un 4,9 % hasta un 8,3 %, entre los años 1999 a 2012. Aunque, en general, se consideran bien tolerados, algunos estudios epidemiológicos ―que extraen información a partir de grandes bases de datos― han reportado una serie de efectos adversos asociados con su uso prolongado, entre los cuales están el deterioro cognitivo, la enfermedad renal crónica, el infarto de miocardio, el accidente cerebrovascular, las fracturas óseas e incluso la muerte, entre otros. El objetivo fue realizar una revisión narrativa de la literatura acerca de los efectos del uso crónico de los IBP sobre el deterioro cognitivo en los adultos mayores. Se revisaron artículos a partir de una búsqueda en las bases de datos Pudmed, Scopus y Scielo con las palabras clave y términos Mesh/DeCS relacionados tanto en inglés como en español. Los efectos secundarios a nivel neurológico inducidos por el uso crónico de los IBP pueden estar relacionados indirectamente con la presencia de alteraciones sistémicas secundarias (deficiencia de magnesio y vitamina B12) o con efectos directos sobre el funcionamiento neuronal después de pasar a través de la barrera hematoencefálica. Si bien se han descrito varios mecanismos neurobiológicos por medio de los cuales los IBP podrían favorecer el desarrollo de la demencia ―que comprenden el funcionamiento de la proteína tau, la acumulación de beta amiloide (βA) y la deficiencia de cobalamina, entre otros―, la mayor parte de la evidencia clínica disponible no ha encontrado una asociación significativa entre el uso de los IBP y el riesgo de demencia o el deterioro cognitivo. Para establecer de una manera más clara los efectos clínicos adversos del uso crónico de los IBP, en especial, en el funcionamiento cerebral, se necesitan estudios de cohorte bien diseñados, con tamaños de muestra grandes y periodos de seguimiento prolongados, con un método confiable para ajustar los factores de confusión estandarizados y, además, realizar análisis por subgrupos.


ABSTRACT Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most potent drugs to inhibit gastric acid secretion, being used in the treatment of most inflammatory conditions of the gastric mucosa. They are among the most prescribed and overprescribed medications worldwide; for example, in the United States, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, they almost doubled their use in adults aged 40 years and older from 4.9 % to 8.3 % between 1999 and 2012. Although they are generally considered well tolerated, some epidemiological studies extracting information from large databases have reported a number of adverse effects associated with their prolonged use, including cognitive impairment, chronic kidney disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, bone fractures and even death, among others. The objective was to conduct a narrative review of the literature on the effects of chronic use of PPIs on cognitive impairment in older adults. Articles were reviewed based on a search in the PubMed, Scopus and SciELO databases using both English and Spanish keywords and related MeSH/DeCS terms. Neurological side effects induced by chronic PPI use may be indirectly related to secondary systemic disorders (magnesium and vitamin B12 deficiency) or to direct effects on neuronal functioning after passing through the blood-brain barrier. Although several neurobiological mechanisms by which PPIs could favor the development of dementia-which involve Tau protein function, beta-amyloid [βA] accumulation and cobalamin deficiency, among others-have been described, most of the available clinical evidence has not shown a significant association between PPI use and the risk of dementia or cognitive impairment. To establish the adverse clinical effects of chronic PPI use more clearly, especially on brain functioning, well-designed cohort studies with large sample sizes and long follow-up periods, with a reliable method to adjust for standardized confounders, as well as subgroup analyses are needed.

El Toxoplasma gondii es un parásito que se encuentra, aproximadamente, en el 30 % de la población humana. Durante los últimos años se ha evidenciado que la infección latente puede ser un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de trastornos mentales; particularmente para la esquizofrenia, ansiedad, trastornos bipolares y trastornos de conducta. La asociación con los trastornos neuropsiquiátricos pueden explicarse por la influencia que tiene el parásito sobre la expresión de múltiples neurotransmisores; entre ellos la dopamina. Se realizó una búsqueda en las bases de datos PubMed y SciELO de 2015 a 2023, se seleccionaron artículos originales y de revisión de revistas científicas internacionales, en idiomas inglés y español con el objetivo de describir la relación entre la seroprevalencia de T. gondii y el desarrollo de trastornos mentales en población adulta. Existe relación entre los trastornos mentales en la población adulta con la infección por Toxoplasma gondii y este aumenta la posibilidad de desarrollar esquizofrenia y depresión en individuos sin historial previo, y que podría exacerbar cuadros psiquiátricos previos con dificultad en el tratamiento. Sin embargo, no todos los datos estadísticos establecen una relación directa, algunos estudios demuestran una asociación, ciertos datos son discordantes, lo que abre una puerta para futuras investigaciones.


Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that is found in approximately 30 % of the human population. In recent years, it has been shown that latent infection can be a risk factor for the development of mental disorders; particularly schizophrenia, anxiety, bipolar disorders, and conduct disorders. The association with neuropsychiatric disorders can be explained by the influence of the parasite on the expression of multiple neurotransmitters; among them, dopamine has received the most attention. A narrative bibliographic review article was done with the search of original and review articles in international scientific journals, in English and Spanish listing the relationship between the seroprevalence of T. gondii and the development of mental disorders in the adult population. The relationship between mental disorders in the adult population with Toxoplasma gondii infection is present and increases the possibility of developing schizophrenia and depression in individuals with no previous history, including the ability to worsen previous psychiatric conditions, making it difficult for standard management. Not all statistical data establish a direct relationship, some studies show an association and certain data are discordant, which opens a door for future research.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a influência das habilidades intelectuais-cognitivas verbais na percepção de fala no ruído, em idosos com perda auditiva sensorioneural, considerando a escolaridade, a idade e o grau da perda auditiva. Método Participaram 36 idosos entre 60 e 89 anos com perda auditiva sensorioneural bilateral, que após avaliação psicológica por meio do Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults (WAIS III), foram divididos em (GI) 24 idosos sem alteração cognitiva e (GII) 12 idosos com risco de alteração cognitiva. Foram submetidos à avaliação otorrinolaringológica, entrevista audiológica, audiometria tonal liminar e a avaliação da percepção de fala no ruído por meio do Hearing in Noise Test (HINT-Brasil). O teste estatístico U de Mann-Whitney comparou os resultados entre os grupos, e a correlação de Spearman verificou as variáveis idade, grau da perda auditiva e nível de escolaridade. Resultados Não houve diferença entre os grupos na habilidade de percepção de fala no ruído, exceto na condição ruído à esquerda, no qual o GII apresentou melhor desempenho no HINT-Brasil. O grau da perda auditiva e o nível de escolaridade influenciaram na percepção de fala no ruído. O nível de escolaridade teve correlação com os resultados do WAIS III. Conclusão O declínio das habilidades intelectuais-cognitivas verbais não interferiu na percepção de fala no ruído nos idosos com perda auditiva. O grau da perda auditiva e o nível de escolaridade influenciaram no desempenho dos idosos no teste de percepção de fala no ruído. O desempenho nas habilidades cognitivas verbais variou com o nível de escolaridade.


ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the influence of verbal intellectual-cognitive skills on speech perception in noise, in elderly with sensorineural hearing loss, considering education, age, and degree of hearing loss. Methods 36 elderly between 60 and 89 years old with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss participated in the study. After psychological assessment using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults (WAIS-III), they were grouped into (GI) 24 elderly without cognitive alteration and (GII) 12 elderly with risk of cognitive alteration. They underwent otorhinolaryngological assessment, audiological interview, pure tone audiometry, and assessment of speech perception in noise using the Hearing in Noise Test (HINT-Brazil). The Mann-Whitney U statistical test compared the results between the groups, and the Spearman correlation verified the variable's age, degree of hearing loss, and level of education. Results There was no difference between the groups in the ability to perceive speech in noise, except in the noise on the left condition, in which GII showed better performance in HINT-Brazil. The degree of hearing loss and level of education influenced the perception of speech in noise. The level of education was correlated with the WAIS-III results. Conclusion The decline in verbal intellectual-cognitive skills did not affect speech perception of noise in the elderly with hearing loss. The degree of hearing loss and level of education influenced the performance of the elderly in the speech perception test in noise. Performance in verbal cognitive skills varied according to the level of education.

ABSTRACT. The repercussions of Long COVID demand specialised rehabilitation care. Interdisciplinary interventions in a 58-year-old patient were implemented to improve the clinical, motor and cognitive complaints associated with COVID-19. The rehabilitation team performed quantitative and qualitative evaluations in the initial phase and after 12 months of follow-up. The patient's neuropathic pain, ankle and foot muscle strength, gait pattern, general cognitive functioning, initiative, emotional expressiveness, processing speed, neuropsychiatric symptoms and quality of life improved. She demonstrated gains in metacognition and expanded the use of compensatory strategies, resuming her routine and professional activities, although still with signs of executive dysfunction. It is concluded that a rehabilitation program calibrated to the profile of the patient with Long COVID had positive effects on functionality and satisfaction with quality of life.


RESUMO. As repercussões da COVID Longa demandam atendimentos especializados de reabilitação. Intervenções interdisciplinares em paciente de 58 anos foram implementadas com o objetivo de melhorar as queixas clínicas, motoras e cognitivas associadas à COVID-19. A equipe de reabilitação realizou avaliações quantiqualitativas na fase inicial e após 12 meses de acompanhamento. A paciente evoluiu com melhora da dor neuropática, da força muscular de tornozelo e pé, do padrão de marcha, do funcionamento cognitivo geral, da iniciativa, da expressividade emocional, da velocidade de processamento, dos sintomas neuropsiquiátricos e da qualidade de vida (domínios físico e psicológico). Demonstrou ganhos na metacognição e ampliou o uso de estratégias compensatórias, retomando suas atividades rotineiras e profissionais, embora ainda com indícios de disfunção executiva. Conclui-se que um programa de reabilitação calibrado ao perfil do paciente com COVID longa trouxe efeitos positivos na funcionalidade e satisfação com a qualidade de vida.

ABSTRACT Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people suffered from Long Covid Syndrome, in which affected individuals do not recover immediately after the end of the infectious and inflammatory process caused by the virus. The most common neuropsychological symptoms of this syndrome are: memory decline, lack of attention, anxiety and depression. Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop a proposed cognitive rehabilitation protocol for post-COVID individuals with cognitive symptoms. Methods: A rehabilitation proposed protocol focusing on attention and memory was developed, based on the tests used in the neuropsychological evaluation of affected patients. Researchers held weekly sessions for six months, each lasting 60 minutes. Homework activities were also assigned and corrected in the following session. The attention and memory sessions were conducted with activities based on the applied tests. Results: Despite the methodological separation of attention and memory, the activities indirectly affect other cognitive functions and abilities, such as executive function, language, reasoning, execution strategies, and cognitive flexibility. A computer, a sheet of paper, and a pen were used to present the slides for the activities. Attention training included all types of attention: sustained, alternating, selective and divided. Memory training sessions included activities that stimulated both short-term and long-term memory. With each session, the difficulty of the activities was gradually increased. Conclusion: Cognitive rehabilitation already has more consolidated evidence about its effectiveness for the treatment of other pathologies, so it can be thought that it will also be a promising strategy for COVID-19 too.


RESUMO Desde o início da pandemia de COVID-19, muitas pessoas sofreram com a síndrome da COVID longa, em que os indivíduos afetados não se recuperam após o término do processo infeccioso e inflamatório causado pelo vírus. Os sintomas neuropsicológicos mais comuns dessa síndrome são: declínio da memória, falta de atenção, ansiedade e depressão. Objetivo: Desenvolver uma proposta de protocolo de reabilitação cognitiva para indivíduos pós-COVID com sintomas cognitivos. Métodos: Foi desenvolvida uma proposta de protocolo de reabilitação com foco na atenção e na memória, baseada nos testes utilizados na avaliação neuropsicológica dos pacientes afetados. Os pesquisadores realizaram sessões semanais durante seis meses, cada uma com duração de 60 minutos. As atividades de lição de casa também foram atribuídas e corrigidas na sessão seguinte. As sessões de atenção e memória foram realizadas com atividades baseadas nos testes aplicados. Resultados: Apesar da separação metodológica entre atenção e memória, as atividades afetam indiretamente outras funções e habilidades cognitivas, como função executiva, linguagem, raciocínio, estratégias de execução e flexibilidade cognitiva. Foram utilizados computador, folha de papel e caneta para a apresentação dos slides das atividades. O treinamento da atenção incluiu todos os tipos de atenção: sustentada, alternada, seletiva e dividida. As sessões de treinamento de memória incluíram atividades que estimularam memória de curto e longo prazo. A cada sessão, a dificuldade das atividades foi aumentando gradativamente. Conclusão: A reabilitação cognitiva já possui evidências mais consolidadas sobre a sua eficácia para o tratamento de outras patologias, pelo que se pode pensar que na COVID-19 será também uma estratégia promissora.

Introducción: La detección temprana del deterioro cognitivo en personas mayores permite disminuir la incertidumbre y mejorar las tareas de intervención. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar las características psicométricas de un protocolo de cribado online para detectar tempranamente deterioro leve en personas mayores. Método: el método usado fue de tipo mixta con preguntas de tipo cuantitativas y cualitativas. La muestra fue de 75 personas mayores del gran Concepción, región del Bio-Bio. El protocolo estaba compuesto por: Cuestionario sociodemográfico, Test del Reloj Versión Cacho, Moca, Escala Depresión Yesavage y Test Acentuación de Palabras. El procedimiento consistió en la aplicación del protocolo a través de un Tablet o Laptop, videollamadas. Resultados: Se encontró que el protocolo presenta validez discriminante y convergente. Conclusiones: se concluye que el protocolo de cribado online para detectar tempranamente deterioro leve en personas mayores es válido y fiable. Se discute el uso y la aplicación de un protocolo cribado usando la Teleneuropsicología (TeleNP), en personas mayores


ABTRACT Introduction: Early detection of cognitive impairment in the elderly allows us to reduce uncertainty and improve intervention tasks. The objective of this research was to determine the psychometric characteristics of an online screening protocol for early detection of mild impairment in the elderly. Method: the method used was of a mixed type with quantitative and qualitative questions. The sample consisted of 75 older people from the greater Concepción, Bio-Bio region. The protocol consisted of: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Cacho Version Clock Test, Mocha, Yesavage Depression Scale and Word Stress Test. The procedure consisted of the application of the protocol through a Tablet or Laptop, video calls. Results: It was found that the protocol presents discriminant and convergent validity. Conclusions: it is concluded that the online screening protocol for early detection of mild deterioration in the elderly is valid and reliable. The use and application of a screening protocol using Teleneuropsychology (TeleNP) in older people is discussed.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: During development, children face a number of demands and cognitive, behavioral, and social challenges necessary for growth. Cognitive skills make individuals competent and allow them to interact with their environment. OBJECTIVE: To identify the cognitive skills that promote better social insertion in children with autism spectrum disorder within 12 months. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective cohort study METHODS: In this study, 21 children aged 3-12 years were assessed, and their mothers were interviewed. Children were enrolled in regular or special autistic schools. Twelve months after the first assessment, the same children participated in the second assessment. In individual interviews, mothers provided data by answering the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale. Each child was assessed individually using the fourth edition of the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale 4th Edition. RESULTS: In the first assessment, the Stanford Binet areas and total scores correlated with the communication domains, daily life abilities, socialization, and total score of the Vineland Scale. After 12 months, a correlation was observed between the Stanford Binet areas and the total and communication domains, daily life abilities, socialization, motor abilities, and total score on the Vineland Scale. CONCLUSION: Logic mathematics and memory promote better social insertion in children with autism spectrum disorder. General cognitive ability promotes communication.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify sociodemographic factors, clinical conditions and sarcopenia parameters that predict hospital admission and death in older adults with cognitive impairment. Method: this is a longitudinal observational study carried out with 170 older adults with cognitive impairment assessed between 2019 and 2021. Predictor variables were sociodemographic characteristics, clinical conditions and sarcopenia parameters. Sarcopenia was operationalized through handgrip muscle strength (dynamometry), muscle mass (calf circumference) and the Timed Up and Go test. Occurrence of hospital admission and death within one year after assessment of older adults were the predicted variables. Analyzes were carried out using descriptive statistics, independent Student' t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test and univariate logistic regression. Results: most participants were female (±77.57 years old), with low education, sedentary, 15.9% with sarcopenia and 13% with a history of hospital admission. It was identified that education level had an effect on occurrence of hospital admission (U=1,423.5, p=0.027) and death (U=647.0, p=0.025) within one-year follow-up. Furthermore, there is an association between history of hospital admission in the last 6 months and occurrence of hospital admission [χ2(1)=4.729; p=0.030] and death [χ2(1)=3.919; p=0.048] within one year follow-up. It was identified that history of hospital admission in the last 6 months was associated with occurrence of hospital admission within one-year follow-up (OR=2.963; 95%CI 1.076-8.165, p=0.036). Conclusion: history of hospital admission in the last six months is associated with occurrence of hospital admission over a year in older adults with cognitive impairment.


RESUMEN Objetivo: identificar factores sociodemográficos, condiciones clínicas y parámetros de sarcopenia que predicen la hospitalización y la muerte en personas mayores con deterioro cognitivo. Método: estudio observacional longitudinal realizado con 170 personas mayores con deterioro cognitivo evaluados entre 2019 y 2021. Las variables predictoras fueron las características sociodemográficas, las condiciones clínicas y los parámetros de sarcopenia. La sarcopenia se puso en práctica mediante la fuerza de los músculos de prensión manual (dinamometría), la masa muscular (circunferencia de la pantorrilla) y la prueba Timed Up and Go. La ocurrencia de hospitalización y muerte dentro del año posterior a la evaluación del anciano configuró las variables predichas. Los análisis se realizaron mediante estadística descriptiva las pruebas t de Student independiente, U de Mann-Whitney, chi-cuadrado y regresión logística univariada. Resultados: la mayoría de los participantes fueron del sexo femenino (±77,57 años), con bajo nivel educativo, sedentarios, el 15,9% con sarcopenia y el 13% con antecedentes de hospitalización. Se identificó que el nivel de escolaridad tuvo efecto en la ocurrencia de hospitalización (U=1.423,5, p=0,027) y muerte (U=647,0, p=0,025) al año de seguimiento. Además, existe asociación entre el antecedente de hospitalización en los últimos 6 meses y la ocurrencia de hospitalización [χ2(1)=4,729; p=0,030] y muerte [χ2(1)=3,919; p=0,048] al año de seguimiento. Résumé

Objective: This study aims at shedding light on online child psychotherapy using cognitive-behavioral therapy as well as suggesting forms of psychological interventions during a pandemic. Method: Since the beginning of the recent coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak, which causes COVID-19, there has been a great concern about a disease that has rapidly spread over the world, bringing about several different socio-economic issues. The fear of contracting the disease has led to safety measures and uncertainties with regard to the future, and it is believed that social isolation has had a direct and psychological impact on both adults and children. This way, we conducted a systematic search for literature review articles. Results: The clinical practice has led to observe that children had their routine interrupted and, consequently, prevented from basic activities such as going to school, being separated from friends, being apart from grandparents, spending the day with their parents, and not to mention, depending on their age, attending online classes in the most varied ways. Conclusion: It is clear that through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy, forms of psychological interventions can be suggested in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, it is clear that effective results are possible with online intervention.


Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo é sistematizar conhecimentos sobre o atendimento online infantil através da terapia cognitivo-comportamental e sugerir formas de intervenções psicológicas diante da pandemia de COVID-19. Método: Desde o início do surto do coronavírus (SARS-CoV-2), causador da COVID-19, houve preocupação diante de uma doença que se alastrou rapidamente em várias regiões do mundo, com diferentes impactos. Além do medo de contrair a doença, dos cuidados com os familiares e das incertezas frente ao futuro, o isolamento causou impactos psicológicos diretamente relacionados à COVID-19 tanto em adultos como em crianças. Deste modo, foi feita uma busca sistemática por artigos. Resultados: A prática clínica levou ao entendimento de que as crianças passaram por mudanças, como a interrupção das idas à escola, o afastamento dos amigos e dos avós e a presença dos pais o dia todo em casa, além de, dependendo da idade, aulas online em diversos estilos, e a percepção de que os pais também não sabiam como lidar com a situação. Conclusão: Percebe-se que através do uso da terapia cognitivo-comportamental pode-se sugerir formas de intervenções psicológicas diante da pandemia de COVID-19. Assim, nota-se que resultados efetivos são possíveis com a intervenção on-line.

Introducción: En la medida que se incrementa la población de adultos mayores, aumenta la prevalencia, aumenta la prevalencia del deterioro cognitivo. Recientemente, se ha introducido la mala salud oral entre los factores de riesgo potenciales. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre la salud oral y el deterioro cognitivo leve en adultos mayores de una comunidad de la provincia de Santiago de Cuba. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional, analítico y retrospectivo, de tipo casos y controles en el período comprendido entre enero y julio del año 2023. La población de estudio estuvo constituida por 257 adultos mayores que vivían en esta comunidad, de los cuales se escogieron 40 casos con diagnóstico de deterioro cognitivo leve, según los criterios de Petersen. Se seleccionaron tres controles por cada caso, 120 adultos mayores con aproximadamente las mismas características que el caso. Se precisó la fuerza de asociación de cada factor de riesgo. Resultados: Se halló una asociación significativa entre padecer deterioro cognitivo leve y presentar un número de 1 a 9 dientes. El dolor oral se presentó con mayor frecuencia en el 72,5 por ciento de los casos. No recordar la última visita al estomatólogo fue causa de deterioro cognitivo leve en el 42,5 por ciento. Cepillarse irregularmente se asoció 4,1 veces más con el riesgo de desarrollar esta afección. Conclusiones : Existe una asociación entre la salud oral y el deterioro cognitivo leve en los adultos mayores. Tener menos dientes y referir dolor oral fueron factores de riesgo importantes para presentar deterioro cognitivo. La visita al estomatólogo y el cepillado de dientes irregular influyeron negativamente en la enfermedad. Sin embargo, el uso de prótesis dentales fue un factor protector para el deterioro cognitivo leve(AU)


Introduction: Along with the increase in the population of older adults, the prevalence of cognitive impairment is increasing. Recently, poor oral health has been introduced among potential risk factors. Objective: To determine the association between oral health and mild cognitive impairment in older adults in a community in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Methods: An observational, analytical and retrospective case-control study was carried out from January to July 2023. The study population consisted of 257 older adults living in this community, from which 40 cases were selected with a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, according to Petersen's criteria. Three controls were selected for each case, 120 older adults with approximately the same characteristics as the case. The strength of association of each risk factor was determined. Results: A significant association was found between having mild cognitive impairment and having 1 to 9 teeth. Oral pain was more frequent in 72.5 percent of the cases. Not remembering the last visit to the dentist was a cause of mild cognitive impairment in 42.5 percent. Irregular brushing was 4.1 times more associated with the risk of developing this condition. Conclusions: There is an association between oral health and mild cognitive impairment in older adults. Having fewer teeth and reporting oral pain were important risk factors for cognitive impairment. Visiting the dentist and irregular tooth brushing had a negative influence on the disease. However, the use of dental prosthetics was a protective factor for mild cognitive impairment(AU)

ABSTRACT Purpose To address the need for a standardized assessment tool for assessing cognitive-communication abilities among Indian preschoolers, the current study aimed at describing a Delphi based development and validation process for developing one such tool. The objectives of the research were to conceptualize and construct the tool, validate its content, and assess its feasibility through pilot testing. Methods The study followed a Delphi approach to develop and validate the tool across four phases i.e. conceptualization; construction; content validation; and pilot testing. The first three phases were performed with a panel of six experts including speech-language pathologists and preschool teachers while the pilot testing was done with 20 typically developing preschoolers. A literature review was also conducted with the Delphi rounds to support the developmental process. Results The first two rounds of the Delphi aided in the construction of a culturally and linguistically suitable story-based cognitive-communication assessment tool with the memory (free recall, recognition, and literary recall) and executive function (reasoning, inhibition, and switching) related tasks relevant for preschoolers. The content validation of the tool was continued with the experts till the revisions were satisfactory and yielded an optimum Content Validity Index. The pilot test of the finalized version confirmed its feasibility and appropriateness to assess developmental changes in the cognitive-communication abilities of preschoolers. Conclusion The study describes the Delphi-based conceptualization, construction, content validation, and feasibility check of a tool to assess cognitive-communication skills in preschool children.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Cognitive losses are among the most prevalent events in the elderly population and can cause functional deficits. Among the available non-drug prevention and treatment alternatives, the increase in functional fitness levels is presented as an important strategy suggesting improvements in the physical and cognitive function of the elderly triggered by exercise. Objective: To determine the predictive power of functional fitness indicators and establish their cutoff points as discriminators of cognitive impairment in the elderly. Methods: The sample comprised 310 elderly people who answered a questionnaire comprising sociodemographic information, lifestyle habits, hospitalization in the last 12 months, presence of comorbidity, and the Mini-Mental State Examination. Functional fitness was assessed using the Hand Grip Strength (HGS) and sitting and rising from a chair tests. To identify predictors of cognitive impairment, analysis of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves was adopted, with a confidence interval of 95% (95%CI). Subsequently, the cut-off points with their respective sensitivities and specificities were identified. The analyses were performed respecting the significance level of 5%. Results: It was observed that some functional fitness indicators showed significant Area Under the Curve (AUC), and the sit-and-stand test (AUC=0.72; 95%CI: 0.64-0.77) showed the best results. The best cut-off points for the HGS and sit-and-stand tests were 18,8 kgf and eight repetitions, respectively. Conclusion: The results of the present study allow us to conclude that the sit-to-stand test is moderately efficient in discriminating the presence of cognitive impairment in the elderly. RESUMEN Introducción: Las pérdidas cognitivas se encuentran entre los eventos más prevalentes en la población anciana y pueden causar déficits funcionales. Entre las alternativas de prevención y tratamiento no farmacológico disponibles, el aumento de los niveles de condición física funcional se presenta como una estrategia importante que sugiere mejoras en la función física y cognitiva de los ancianos, desencadenada por la práctica de ejercicios. Objetivo: Determinar el poder predictivo de los indicadores de aptitud funcional y establecer sus puntos de corte como discriminadores del deterioro cognitivo en adultos mayores. Métodos: La muestra estuvo compuesta por 310 ancianos que respondieron un cuestionario que comprendía información sociodemográfica, hábitos de vida, hospitalización en los últimos 12 meses, presencia de comorbilidad y el Mini-Examen del Estado Mental. La condición física funcional se evaluó utilizando la fuerza de agarre manual (FAM) y las pruebas de sentarse y levantarse de una silla. Para identificar predictores de deterioro cognitivo, se adoptó el análisis de curvas Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC), con intervalo de confianza del 95% (IC95%). Posteriormente se identificaron los puntos de corte con sus respectivas sensibilidades y especificidades. Los análisis se realizaron respetando el nivel de significancia del 5%. Resultados: Se observó que algunos indicadores de aptitud funcional mostraron un Área Bajo la Curva (ABC) significativa, y la prueba de sentarse y pararse (ABC=0,72; 95%IC: 0,64-0,77) mostró los mejores resultados. Los mejores puntos de corte para el test FAM y el sit-and-stand test fueron 18,8 kgf y 8 repeticiones, respectivamente. Conclusión: Los resultados del presente estudio permiten concluir que el test sit-to-stand es moderadamente eficiente para discriminar la presencia de deterioro cognitivo en adultos mayores. Dentre as alternativas de prevenção e tratamento não medicamentosos disponíveis, o aumento dos níveis de aptidão funcional apresenta-se como uma estratégia importante sugerindo melhorias na função física e na função cognitiva de idosos, desencadeadas através da prática de exercícios. Objetivo: Determinar o poder preditivo dos indicadores de aptidão funcional e estabelecer seus pontos de corte como discriminadores do comprometimento cognitivo em idosos. Métodos: A amostra compreendeu 310 idosos que responderam a um questionário composto por informações sociodemográficas, hábitos de vida, hospitalização nos últimos 12 meses, presença de comorbidade e o Mini-Exame do Estado Mental. A aptidão funcional foi avaliada por meio dos testes de Força de Preensão Manual (FPM) e o de sentar e levantar da cadeira. Para identificação dos preditores do comprometimento cognitivo, foi adotada a análise das curvas Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC), com intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%). Posteriormente, identificaram-se os pontos de corte com as respectivas sensibilidades e especificidades. As análises foram efetuadas respeitando-se o nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Observou-se que alguns indicadores de aptidão funcional apresentaram Área Sob a Curva (ASC) significativas, sendo que o teste de sentar e levantar da cadeira (ASC=0,72; IC95%= 0,64-0,77) apresentou os melhores resultados. Os melhores pontos de corte para o teste de FPM e o teste de sentar e levantar da cadeira foram de 18,8 kgf e 8 repetições respectivamente. ABSTRACT. COVID-19 is a multisystem disease caused by the RNA virus (coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2) that can impact cognitive measures. Objective: To identify the main cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms in adults who had no cognitive complaints prior to the infection. Specifically, to observe the trajectory of cognitive and neuropsychiatric performance after 6 months. Methods: This is a retrospective longitudinal study. Forty-nine patients (29 reassessed after 6 months), with a positive PCR test, with no prior cognitive complaints that only presented after the infection and without a history of structural, neurodegenerative or psychiatric neurological diseases. A brief cognitive assessment battery (MoCA), the Trail Making Test (TMT-A, B, ∆), and the Verbal Fluency Test were used, as well as the scales (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-HADS, Fatigue Severity Scale-FSS). Correlation tests and group comparison were used for descriptive and inferential statistics. Level of significance of α=5%. Results: Mean age of 50.4 (11.3), 12.7 (2.8) years of education, higher percentage of women (69.8%). No psycho-emotional improvement (depression and anxiety) was observed between the evaluations, and patients maintained the subjective complaint of cognitive changes. The HAD-Anxiety scale showed a significant correlation with TMT-B errors. The subgroup participating in cognitive stimulation and psychoeducation showed improvement in the global cognition measure and the executive attention test. Conclusion: Our results corroborate other studies that found that cognitive dysfunctions in post-COVID-19 patients can persist for months after disease remission, as well as psycho-emotional symptoms, even in individuals with mild infection. Future studies, with an increase in casuistry and control samples, are necessary for greater evidence of these results.


RESUMO. A COVID-19 é uma doença multissistêmica causada pelo vírus RNA (coronavírus 2 ou SARS-CoV-2) que pode ocasionar repercussão em medidas cognitivas. Objetivo: Identificar os principais sintomas cognitivos e neuropsiquiátricos em adultos sem queixas cognitivas anteriores à infecção. Especificamente, verificar a trajetória do desempenho cognitivo e neuropsiquiátrico após 6 meses. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo e longitudinal. Foram incluídos 49 pacientes (29 reavaliados após 6 meses), com exame de PCR positivo, sem queixas cognitivas prévias que só se apresentaram após a infecção ou histórico de doenças neurológicas estruturais ou neurodegenerativas. Foram utilizados a bateria de avaliação cognitiva breve (MoCA), o Teste de Trilhas (TMT-A, B e ∆) e o Teste de Fluência Verbal; assim como a Escala Hospitalar de Ansiedade e Depressão (HADS), e a escala de Severidade da Fadiga (ESF/BR). Testes de correlação e comparação de grupos foram utilizados para estatística descritiva e inferencial. Esta ocorreu através de. Nível de significância de α=5%. Resultados: idade média de 50,4 anos (11,3), anos de escolaridade 12,7 (2,8), maior proporção de mulheres (69,8%). Não foi observada melhora psicoemocional (depressão e ansiedade) entre as avaliações, assim como os pacientes mantiveram a queixa subjetiva de alteração cognitiva. A escala HAD-Ansiedade apresentou correlação significativa com os erros do TMT-B. O subgrupo que participou da estimulação cognitiva e psicoeducação apresentou melhora na medida de cognição global e no teste de atenção executiva. Conclusão: Nossos resultados corroboram com os demais estudos que constataram que a disfunção cognitiva em pacientes pós-COVID-19 pode persistir por meses após a remissão da doença, assim como sintomas psicoemocionais, mesmo em indivíduos com quadros leves da infecção. Estudos futuros, com aumento de casuística e amostras de controle, são necessários para maior evidência desses resultados.

ABSTRACT. Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus can lead to neurological symptoms in the acute phase and in the Long COVID phase. These symptoms usually involve cognition, sleep, smell disorders, psychiatric manifestations, headache and others. This condition is more commonly described in young adults and women. This symptomatology can follow severe or mild cases of the disease. The importance of this issue resides in the high prevalence of neurological symptoms in the Long COVID phase, which entails significant morbidity in this population. In addition, such a condition is associated with high health care costs, with some estimates hovering around 3.7 trillion US dollars. In this review, we will sequentially describe the current knowledge about the most prevalent neurological symptoms in Long COVID, as well as their pathophysiology and possible biomarkers.


RESUMO. A infecção pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2 pode levar a sintomas neurológicos na fase aguda e na fase de COVID longa. Esses sintomas geralmente envolvem cognição, sono, distúrbios do olfato, manifestações psiquiátricas, dor de cabeça e outros. Esta condição é mais comumente descrita em adultos jovens e mulheres. A sintomatologia pode acompanhar casos graves ou leves da doença. A importância desta questão reside na elevada prevalência de sintomas neurológicos na fase de COVID longa, o que acarreta morbilidade significativa nesta população. Além disso, tal condição está associada a elevados custos de cuidados de saúde, com algumas estimativas em torno de 3,7 trilhões de dólares americanos. Nesta revisão, descrevemos sequencialmente o conhecimento atual sobre os sintomas neurológicos mais prevalentes na COVID longa, bem como sua fisiopatologia e possíveis biomarcadores.

Résumé

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the single and combined associations between sleep disturbances (sleep duration, insomnia symptoms in the last 30 nights, and daytime tiredness) and performance in cognitive tests. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of data from visit 2 (2012-2014) of the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health from a cohort of active and retired civil servants from six Brazilian capitals. Polynomial regression with quadratic term and multiple linear regression models were performed to assess single and combined associations between sleep disturbances and memory performance, fluency, executive functions, and global cognition. Results: A total of 7,248 participants were included, with a mean age of 62.7 years (standard deviation [SD]=5.9), and 55.2% were women. Inverted U-shaped associations were observed between sleep duration and performance on all cognitive abilities, suggesting that durations shorter or longer than seven hours are associated with worse performance, regardless of age. Reported insomnia was associated with worse executive function (β: -0.08; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.15 to -0.01), and the magnitudes of associations were higher for individuals with insomnia at two or more moments (β: -0.12; 95%CI -0.19 to -0.05) or, especially, insomnia combined with short sleep (β: -0.18; 95%CI -0.24 to -0.11). Insomnia in two or more periods was also associated with lower memory and global cognition. There was no association between any sleep disturbance tested and verbal fluency. Isolated daytime tiredness was not associated with performance in the evaluated tests. Conclusion: The results suggest that extreme sleep durations are detrimental to almost all cognitive abilities investigated, whereas insomnia appears to affect more severely the executive function.


RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar a associação isolada e combinada entre distúrbios do sono (duração do sono, sintomas de insônia nas últimas 30 noites e cansaço diurno) e desempenho em testes cognitivos. Métodos: Análise transversal dos dados da visita 2 (2012-2014) do Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto de coorte de servidores públicos ativos e aposentados de seis capitais brasileiras. Regressão polinomial com termo quadrático e modelos de regressão linear múltipla foram realizados para avaliar associações isoladas e combinadas entre distúrbios do sono e desempenho na memória, fluência, funções executivas e cognição global. Resultados: Foram incluídos um total de 7.248 participantes, com média etária de 62,7 anos (desvio padrão [DP]=5,9), sendo 55,2% mulheres. Associações em forma de U invertido foram observadas entre duração do sono e desempenho em todas as habilidades cognitivas, sugerindo que durações menores ou maiores que sete horas estão associadas ao pior desempenho, independentemente da idade. O relato de insônia foi associado à pior função executiva (β: -0.08; IC95% -0.15 a -0.01), sendo as magnitudes das associações maiores para indivíduos com insônia em dois ou mais momentos (β: -0.12; intervalo de confiança [IC]95% -0.19 a -0.05) ou, especialmente, insônia combinada com sono curto (β: -0.18; IC95% -0.24 a -0.11). Insônia em dois ou mais períodos também foi associada à menor memória e cognição global. Não houve associação entre qualquer distúrbio do sono testado e fluência verbal. Cansaço diurno isolado não foi associado ao desempenho nos testes avaliados. Conclusão: Os resultados sugerem que a duração extrema do sono é prejudicial para quase todas as funções cognitivas investigadas, enquanto a insônia parece afetar mais fortemente a função executiva.

Résumé

Objective To explore the dynamic changes and mechanisms of neurological and cognitive functions in mice with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods Totally 60 12⁃month⁃old Balb/ c mice were divided into control group (10 in group) and TBI group (50 in group). TBT model mice were divided into 5 subgroups according to the time of model construction, including model 1 day, model 1 day, model 3 day, model 7 day, model 14 days and model 28 days group with 10 in each group. At the 29th day of the experiment, neurological scores and step down tests were carried out. After the test, the mice were sacrificed for brains which were detected by immunohistochemistry staining, inflammatory cytokine tests and Western blotting. Results Compared with the control group, the neurological scores of mice in TBI group increased, and then decreased after the 7th day when the scores reached the peak. However, the latency of step down errors was lower than control group, and the number of step down errors was higher than control group which had no changes. Compared with the control group, the expression of lonized calcium⁃binding adapter molecule 1(IBA1), chemokine C⁃X3⁃C⁃motif ligand1 (CX3CL1), C⁃X3⁃C chemokine receptor 1(CX3CR1), NOD⁃like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3), and phosphorylation nuclear factor(p⁃NF)⁃κB in TBI group increased and reached to the peak at the 7th day, and then started to decrease. At the same time, the levels of inflammatory cytokines interleukin⁃6(IL⁃6) and tumor necrosis factor⁃α(TNF⁃α) first increased to the peak, and then began to decrease. However, compared with the control group, the expression of amyloid β(Aβ) protein and p⁃Tau protein in the model group continued to increase at all time. Conclusion The TBI model caused continuous activation of microglia along with inflammatory response, which first increased and then decreased, resultsing in neurological scores changes. In addition, the inflammatory response may act as a promoter of Aβ protein deposition and Tau protein phosphorylation, leading to cognitive impairment in mice.
