Abstract In northern central Chile, ephemeral pools constitute shallow isolated water bodies with a favourable habitat for fauna adapted to seasonal changes. Based on the limited knowledge about the faunaparticularly insectsassociated to these ecosystems, the objective of this study was to characterize the richness, composition, structure and similarity of the insect communities associated with ephemeral pools in Huentelauquén (29º S, Coquimbo Region, Chile). By using pitfall traps, 10,762 individuals were captured, represented by 7 orders, 27 families, and 51 species. Coleoptera and Hymenoptera were the best represented orders, with Neuroptera, Orthoptera and Plecoptera being poorly represented groups. The non-parametric estimators evaluated showed wealth values above those observed for all the studied pools, and their accumulation curves suggest the existence of an incomplete species inventory in the studied community. Additionally, the hierarchical and ordering analysis showed groupings of pools located in the northwest and southeast of Huentelauquén. Preliminarily we found a negative correlation between the area of the pools and the richness (species) and abundance of insects. Additional studies (on other arthropod groups and other seasons of the year) could provide a better understanding of the local processes of extinction and colonization of the species inhabiting these fragile coastal environments.

Abstract The aim of the current ecological study is to assess the evolution of food deserts and food swamps in the metropolitan city of Belo Horizonte between 2008 and 2020. Food deserts were determined based on the density of healthy establishments per 10,000 inhabitants, whereas food swamps were set based on the density of ultra-processed food procurement establishments per 10,000 inhabitants. The rate of census tracts classified as food deserts has decreased between 2008 and 2020, whereas that of census tracts classified as food swamps has increased within this same period. Furthermore, despite the reduced number of food deserts, these areas have increased in census tracts living under lower socioeconomic vulnerability condition. Food swamps recorded sharp increase in census tracts living under higher vulnerability condition. The population living in the herein investigated city has been increasingly exposed to an unhealthy community food environment over 12 years. Monitoring changes in community food environment is key strategy to enable tracking the effectiveness and efficiency of actions taken in food environments to ensure the human right to adequate food.

Locusts are the most dangerous agricultural pests. They are belonging to family Acrididae. Gregarious locusts travel in swarms from one location to another in adult form. The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal), is one of the grasshopper species that cause crop damage and can fly up to 150 km in the direction of the wind. The present state of knowledge on its biological regulation employing microbes and plant extracts is discussed. Metarhizium flavoviride was among the first fungi to be identified in the laboratory and field as a bio-control agent against desert locust. Following extensive investigation, with integrated pest management stratedies using these bio-controls would be a viable option for controlling desert locust infestations. Against the desert locust, IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approaches that emphasize the successful combination of chemical and biological insecticides with prediction and monitoring technology have been encouraged. Recent experimental investigations and researches are mainly focusing on identifying viable answers through financial collaboration between governmental and non-governmental organizations. The authors highlighted the loss in the agricultural sector due to desert locust infestation, as well as its sophisticated control and management solutions, after evaluating publications from numerous journals, magazines, and symposia.

ABSTRACT The Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFF), located in the state of Coahuila, is considered a natural reservoir for rosetophyllous scrub, which has been affected by land use change in northern Mexico. The objective of this work was to describe the current state of the rosetophilous desert scrub in the Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protected Area, based on its structure, floristic composition, and diversity. Vegetation was evaluated using 35 plots of 5 m x 5 m in 7 linear transects. Height (m), diameter (cm) and crown area (m2) were measured. Abundance, dominance and frequency of each species were determined to obtain the importance value index (IVI), in addition to the Shannon entropy index (H´) to know the diversity, and the true diversity of Shannon (1D). 31 families, 61 genera and 70 species of vascular plants were recorded, including one endemic to Mexico (Galactia brachystachys) and 20 under protection status, such as Agave havardiana, which is also a vulnerable species. The richest families were Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Asparagaceae and Cactaceae. Biological and life forms were trees and shrubs (48 %), herbs (36 %), succulents (13 %), and climbers (3 %). The H' was 3.13 and the 1D was 22.87. The rosetophilous scrub of the APFF Maderas del Carmen has a medium-high diversity, it is dominated by Agave lechuguilla Torr., with greater abundance and IVI. The floristic composition and the diversity found allow a baseline for subsequent studies that determine the ecological status of the area. Especially, they allow us to know in greater detail the population dynamics of endemic species and under protection status, in addition to the habitat for wildlife present in the APFF Maderas del Carmen.

ObjectiveTo determine the virulence of desert-type Leishmania donovani strains through animal infection experiments and to explore preservation methods for maintaining their pathogenicity. Methods The isolated strain was cultured in vitro for 7, 30, 36, 44, 60, 90, and 150 days, respectively, and inoculated into Lagurus lagurus (L.lagurus) with the dose of 2.6×105 per animal by intraperitoneal injection. The spleen coefficient, infection rate, and antibody positive rate of the inoculated animals were detected at day 60 after infection. The desert-type Leishmania donovani strain was further inoculated with Cricetulus migratorius (C.migratorius) and L. lagurus, respectively, for passaging and preservation. The survival time of two kinds of animals andpathogenicity change of the stain in their bodies were compared.ResultsAfter inoculation of desert-type Leishmania donovani strains cultured in vitro for 7-150 days, the spleen coefficient of inoculated L.lagurus gradually increased from 1% on day 7 to 2.2% on day 30, which was more than 10 times of the normal spleen coefficient. Additionally, on day 60, the spleen coefficient remained 3 times higher than the normal value. The infection rate and antibody positive rate decreased from 80% on day 7 to 0% on day 60. At 90 days, there were no significant differences between the infected groups and the control group, and all the observed indexes were within the normal range. The survival time of L.lagurus infected with the in vivo passage strain ranged from 1 to 13 months, and half of the infected individuals died within 4 months. In contrast, C.migratorius had a survival time ranging from 5 to 31 months, and half of the infected individuals died within an average of 13.7 months. There was a significant difference in the average time of death between the two groups (t=0.000 1, P<0.001), but no significant difference in spleen coefficient (t=0.990, P>0.05). This strain exhibited equal virulence in both animals and remained virulent for up to 4 years after continuous passage.ConclusionWith the prolonged culture time, the virulence of the strain decreases gradually. At 90 d, it has no pathogenicity to L. lagurus. Long-term in vitro culture fails to preserve it's pathogenicity to L.lagurus. Only in vivo inoculation can maintain the virulence of this strain.

ABSTRACT The Salinas de Chilca are located at km 65 of the Panamericana Sur highway, represented by three lagoons: La Milagrosa (main lagoon and salt ponds), La Mellicera and La Encantada. The environment of these lagoons belongs to the Subtropical Desert (d-ST) life zone. The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of environmental variables on changes in the macroinvertebrate community structure in the Salinas de Chilca, Lima, Peru. Four collection campaigns were carried out from January to September 2018, establishing twelve sampling stations, three stations for each lentic environment. The sample was collected through sweeps with a 500 µm mesh opening type D network on the shore of each lagoon. The physicochemical parameters of the water presented different values in each lagoon and formed a descending salinity gradient from the saline pools (with hypersaline values) towards the La Encantada lagoon (with mesosaline values). 42 genera of macroinvertebrates were collected, with the most influential genera in community patterns: Heleobia, Larsia, Trichocorixa, Ephydra and Artemia, these organisms represented 83.85 % of the total abundance. The environmental gradient generated by salinity determined two very different groups, a group of species that do not tolerate high salinity values (mesosaline lagoons) from another group of species that support extreme salinity values (hypersaline lagoons); however, predation, anthropic alterations, habitat structure, among other factors, would also be influencing changes in the community structure.

Abstract Diverse habitats have been screened for novel antimicrobial actinomycetes, while others remain unexplored. In this study, we analyzed the bioactivities of actinomycetes cul-tured from rhizosphere soils of the desert plant Artemisia tridentata and the nearby bulk soils. Actinomycetes were screened for antifungal and antibacterial activities toward a panel of plant pathogens; all comparisons were between activities of rhizosphere soil isolates toward those of its counterpart bulk soil. A selected group of the strongest antifungal isolates were also tested against two antifungal-drug resistant strains of Candida albicans. 16S rDNA partial sequences and phylogenetic analysis of isolates that showed broad-spectrum antifungal activities were performed. Forty-two out of 200 and two soil isolated actinomycetes were selected for their strong antifungal activities. The highest proportion of isolates (p <0.05) from rhizosphere soil of an old plant showed antagonism against gram-positive bacteria (0.483 and 0.224 propor-tions against Bacillus subtilis and Rathayibacter tritici, respectively), and phytopathogenic fungi (0.259, 0.431, and 0.345 proportions against Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum, respectively), while the highest antagonism against the gram-negative bacteria predominated in isolates from the bulk soils. Isolates from a rhizosphere soil of a young plant were characterized for strong antagonist activities against Fusarium oxysporum (0.333 proportion, p<0.05). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA sequences showed that isolates that exhibited strong antifungal activity were genetically similar. We conclude that the rhizosphere soil of A. tridentata is an excellent source for discovery of actinomycetes with potentially novel antifungal compounds.

Desert teak (Tecomella undulata (Sm.) Seem) a multipurpose ornamental tree native to the arid and semi-arid tropics has entered the endangered plant category mainly as a result of the species' ineffective seed reproduction system. The tree usually reproduces through a few root suckers in old stands. Conventional methods of plants multiplication could not offer a viable practice for its mass multiplication. Low adventitious rooting of the cuttings has been the principal cause of failure in its vegetative propagation. Hence, the present research was planned and conducted to evaluate the feasibility of somatic embryogenesis in this species, the pathway that bypasses the need for rooting stage by developing bipolar embryos. Ovary explant was cultured in modified Murashigue & Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different auxins and cytokinins. The results showed ?-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) was superior in inducing embryogenic callus. NAA ranging 5.4-21.5 ?M could induce the highest embryogenic calli which exhibited developing pro-embryogenic masses (PEM) and globular somatic embryos. The calli which were induced by the use of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were poor in quality and showed no morphogenesis potency. Individual application of Thidiazuron (TDZ) and N6-benzyladenine (BA) induced good callogenesis at low concentrations but the calli were non-embryogenic with both. The proliferation of embryogenic calli was the best in a hormone-free medium. However, the media containing 40.5 and 54 ?M NAA alone could induce somatic embryos along with callus proliferation. Low BA-contained medium (0.9-4.44 ?M) led to recurrent somatic embryogenesis. Neither BA and GA3, nor the elevating sucrose concentration could cause further development and maturation of the somatic embryos induced during previous stages (callogenesis and callus proliferation). More research is required to optimize the maturation stage. The findings of the present study can be useful for future studies in the micropropagation of this recalcitrant specieslationships in Indian mustard under heat stress and the differential remobilization efficiencies in the advanced breeding lines.

RÉSUMÉ

Due to the urbanization and human invasion of the natural environments, great changes have been occurred on the food composition and feeding ecology of several animals especially those are sharing human his habitat in fields, wadis and gardens. The desert hedgehogs Paraechinus aethiopicus populations inhabiting different localities in Saudi Arabia were studied by using stomach contents analysis between February 2015 and October 2019. Precise analysis of stomach contents of 55 hedgehogs showed that the food of P. aethiopicus is highly diverse and highly influenced with effect of human on the environment including cooked rice, insects, plant materials, eggshells, worms, garbage and remnants of mammals and birds. Diet composition showed seasonal variations that are apparently associated with changes in the availability of different food items. The present results clearly showed that P. aethiopicus is an omnivorous mammal, capable of adapting to a great variety of dietary compositions in the study sites.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: The Atacama salt flat is located in northern Chile, at 2300 m above sea level, and has a high concentration of lithium, being one of the main extraction sites in the world. The effect of lithium on microorganism communities inhabiting environments with high concentrations of this metal has been scarcely studied. A few works have studied the microorganisms present in lithium-rich salt flats (Uyuni and Hombre Muerto in Bolivia and Argentina, respectively). Nanocrystals formation through biological mineralization has been described as an alternative for microorganisms living in metal-rich environments to cope with metal ions. However, bacterial lithium biomineralization of lithium nanostructures has not been published to date. In the present work, we studied lithium-rich soils of the Atacama salt flat and reported for the first time the biological synthesis of Li nanoparticles. RESULTS: Bacterial communities were evaluated and a high abundance of Cellulomonas, Arcticibacter, Mucilaginibacter, and Pseudomonas were determined. Three lithium resistant strains corresponding to Pseudomonas rodhesiae, Planomicrobium koreense, and Pseudomonas sp. were isolated (MIC > 700 mM). High levels of S2− were detected in the headspace of P. rodhesiae and Pseudomonas sp. cultures exposed to cysteine. Accordingly, biomineralization of lithium sulfide-containing nanomaterials was determined in P. rodhesiae exposed to lithium salts and cysteine. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of ultrathin sections of P. rodhesiae cells biomineralizing lithium revealed the presence of nanometric materials. Lithium sulfide-containing nanomaterials were purified, and their size and shape determined by dynamic light scattering and TEM. Spherical nanoparticles with an average size < 40 nm and a hydro-dynamic size ~ 44.62 nm were determined. CONCLUSIONS: We characterized the bacterial communities inhabiting Li-rich extreme environments and reported for the first time the biomineralization of Li-containing nanomaterials by Li-resistant bacteria. The biosynthesis method described in this report could be used to recover lithium from waste batteries and thus provide a solution to the accumulation of batteries.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND Microalgae are microorganisms that produce various products, for example, pigments, mainly carotenoids. This study aimed to used the strain of Muriellopsis sp. and to evaluate their behavior when grown in freshwater and seawater, along with indoor and outdoor conditions for both cultures. Growth of the strain was evaluated by determining its biomass, lutein productivity with highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and antioxidant activity by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrilhydrazil (DPPH method). RESULTS Muriellopsis sp. strain in indoor cultures showed an increased antioxidant activity. In outdoor conditions, both cultures showed increased cells number, concentration of biomass, and lutein productivity. The percentage of lutein obtained from the strain MCH in indoor conditions was 25 times higher than that reported for calendula, reaching 0.75% of lutein in Muriellopsis sp. cultured in seawater, followed by 0.6% in Muriellopsis sp., cultures in freshwater at day 12 of both cultures. These values exceed that of microalgae Scenedesmus almeriensis, which reaches 0.53% lutein. CONCLUSIONS The results show that the native strain of the Atacama Desert is one of the largest producers of lutein as compared to those reported to date. The study demonstrated the feasibility of producing this carotenoid with well-known properties to prevent some diseases due to its high nutritional value. Muriellopsis sp. cultivation in open-air seawater is a good precedent for developing mass production of this species in an area where freshwater is scarce and costly
