Résumé

Carnosic acid (CA) is a natural phenolic diterpene compound found in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) characterized as an ortho-dihydroquinone - type molecule. Multiple lines of studies have shown that CA has potent neuroprotective effects in vitro and in vivo in Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of the present review is to summarize the pharmacological neuroprotective actions of CA, and provide a comprehensive review of the molecular mechanism by which CA exert neuroprotective effect in PD. The current review highlights CA is a therapeutic potential for PD.

Introduction: common mental disorders whose symptoms are not early identified can turn into more serious illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, and mood disorder. The literature presents the use of rosemary as a form of treatment of physical and mental illnesses, including depression. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of treatments with different doses of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extract on symptoms of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) in incarcerated people and prison workers. Methods: This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial study. The intervention was carried out using rosemary extract doses at 100, 500, and 1000 mg day-1 in groups composed of 10 participants, for 3 months. A 20-item self-reporting questionnaire (SRQ-20) was used to assess the presence of CMD. The project was submitted and approved by the Research Ethics Committee under the number 4,973,589. Results: The treatments with rosemary extract at 500 and 1000 mg day-1 showed statistically significant results for reducing CMD symptoms when compared to the those found at the beginning of the research. Conclusion: The use of rosemary extract was effective to reduce CMD in the evaluated prison staff and incarcerated people, especially when used at doses of 500 and 1000 mg day-1, and presented safety, as the participants did not experience side effects.

Patients with mild cognitive impairment eventually progress to Alzheimer's disease (AD) causing a strong impact on public health. Rosmarinus officinalis has long been known as the herb of remembrance and can be a potential cognition enhancer for AD. The aim of this review was to summarize the qualitative and quantitative aspects of R. officinalis and its active constituents in enhancing cognition. A structured search was conducted on Google Scholar and PubMed to find relevant studies that assessed the effect of R. officinalis extract or any of its active constituents on cognitive performance in animals. The following information was extracted from each study: 1) article information; 2) characteristics of study animals; 3) type of intervention: type, dose, duration, and frequency of administration of R. officinalis; and 4) type of outcome measure. Data were analyzed using Review Manager and meta-analysis was performed by computing the standardized mean difference. Twenty-three studies were selected for qualitative analysis and fifteen for meta-analysis. From the fifteen included papers, 22 with 35 comparisons were meta-analyzed. Effect sizes for intact and cognitively impaired animals were 1.19 (0.74, 1.64) and 0.57 (0.19, 0.96), indicating a positive effect on both groups. The subgroup analyses showed substantial unexplained heterogeneity among studies. Overall, R. officinalis improved cognitive outcomes in normal and impaired animals, and results were robust across species, type of extract, treatment duration, and type of memory. However, studies had a considerable amount of heterogeneity, and subgroup analyses failed to find any heterogeneity moderator.

Abstract Using the non-linear regression model, the present study aims to develop sample mathematical models for the microbial flora by utilization of the antimicrobial effects of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extracts at different concentrations (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2%) on the raw chicken mince. For this purpose, 5 experimental groups were established for each plant extract. The samples (100 g each) treated with plant extract at different concentrations were vacuum-packaged under aseptic conditions. The packaged samples were kept in refrigerator (4ºC). The microbiological analyses of (total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, total coliform group bacteria, S. aureus, total yeast-mold, and total psychrophilic bacteria) were performed on 0th, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th days of storage. When compared to the control group the treatment with RE resulted in a decrease in the microbial numbers by 2.5 log units for TMAB number, by 3.5 log units for S. aureus number, by 3,5 log units for TMY number and by 1.5 log units for TP bacteria on the final day of storage. In establishing the model, the plant extract and storage period were used as variable parameters, whereas the shelf-life was used as output parameter. The changes in shelf-life of raw chicken minces by storage period and extract concentration were modeled, the compliance of obtained mathematical models was tested using Variance Analysis Method (ANOVA) and regression and determination coefficients (R2) were determined. After determining their compliance of models based on R2 values, the estimated values and real values were compared. As a result of study, it was determined that R2 values of raw chicken mince models by total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, S. aureus, total coliform bacteria, total yeast/mold, and total psychrophilic bacteria during the storage period were found to range between 0.743 and 0.978 and the models representing the microbial change were found to have a high level of compliance.

ABSTRACT The therapeutic effect of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) or RE on hippocampal neurogenesis and memory in Parkinsonian rats were investigated. Male rats were lesioned by bilateral intra-nigral injections of 6-OHDA and divided into six groups: 1. Lesion 2 and 3: RE and water groups were lesioned rats pretreated with RE or water, from 2weeks before neurotoxin injection and treated once a day for 8weeks post lesion. 4&5: Cell and α-MEM (α-minimal essential médium) received intravenous injection of BrdU-labeled ADSCs or medium, respectively from 10days post lesion until 8weeks later. 6: Sham was injected by saline instead of neurotoxin. Memory was assessed using Morris water Maze (MWM), one week before and at 1, 4 and 8weeks post 6-OHDA lesion. After the last probe, the animals were sacrificed and brain tissue obtained. Paraffin sections were stained using cresyl violet, anti-BrdU (Bromodeoxyuridine / 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine), anti-GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) and anti-TH antibodies. There was a significant difference of time spent in the target quadrant between groups during probe trial at 4 and 8 weeks' post- lesion. Cell and RE groups spent a significantly longer period in the target quadrant and had lower latency as compared with lesion. Treated groups have a significantly higher neuronal density in hippocampus compared to water, α-MEM and lesion groups. BrdU positive cells were presented in lesioned sites. The GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) positive cells were reduced in treated and sham groups compared to the water, α-MEM and lesion groups. Oral administration of RE (Rosemary extract) or ADSCs injection could improve memory deficit in the Parkinsonian rat by neuroprotection.

The food industry and the frozen fish sector in particular have benefitted greatly from advancements in food processing technologies. This study investigated the effect of adding natural antioxidants such as rosemary and thyme oil to frozen fillets of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in order to preserve their quality for consumers. Fillets were treated with rosemary and thyme at two concentrations (1% and 1.5%) and then were stored at 4°C. Samples were analyzed over 4 days for bacteriological (aerobic plate count, psychotropic count, and coliform count), chemical (determination of pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances-TBARS, and total volatile base nitrogen-TVB-N), and sensory quality examination (color, texture, and odor). Significant differences (P<0.05) were observed among different groups in terms of aerobic plate count, psychotropic count, and coliform count during the storage. Moreover, pH, TVB-N, and TBARS mean values in the treated groups were lower than those in the untreated group. The best sensory quality was obtained at the highest concentrations (1.5%) of thyme and rosemary oil.(AU)


A indústria de alimentos e o setor de peixes congelados, em particular, se beneficiaram dos avanços nas tecnologias de processamento de alimentos. Este estudo investigou o efeito da adição de antioxidantes naturais, como óleo de alecrim e tomilho, a filetes congelados de tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), a fim de preservar sua qualidade para os consumidores. Os filés foram tratados com alecrim e tomilho em duas concentrações (1% e 1,5%) e, em seguida, foram armazenados a 4°C. As amostras foram analisadas durante 4 dias para análises bacteriológicas (contagem de placas aeróbicas, psicotrópicas e coliformes), químicas (determinação do pH, substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico-TBARS e nitrogênio base volátil total-TVB-N) e exame da qualidade sensorial (cor, textura e odor). Diferenças significativas (P<0,05) foram observadas entre os diferentes grupos na contagem aeróbia de placas, contagem psicotrópica e contagem de coliformes durante o armazenamento. Além disso, os valores médios de pH, TVB-N e TBARS nos grupos tratados foram inferiores aos do grupo não tratado. A melhor qualidade sensorial foi obtida nas maiores concentrações (1,5%) de tomilho e óleo de alecrim.(AU)

Objective:A high performance liquid chromatography-photo-diode array(HPLC-PDA) method for the simultaneous determination of the 7 phenolic acids including danshensu,protocatechuic acid,protocatechuic aldehyde,chlorogenic acid,caffeic acid,ferulic acid and rosemary acid in Lycopus lucidus var.hirtus rhizome,analyzing and evaluating the phenolic acids in L.lucidus var.hirtus rhizome collected from different habitats,is reported here. Method:The sample was extracted by ultrasonic with 80% methanol solution,7 kinds of phenolic acids were separated on a CAPCELL PAK C18 column (4.6 mm×250 mm,5 μm) with a mobile phase consisting of methanol-0.02% formic acid aqueous (pH 3.10)by gradient elution,The detection wavelength was at 279,324 nm, the column temperature was 30 ℃ with 20 μL injection volume and the flow rate was 1.0 mL·min-1. Result:The 7 Phenolic acids had a good linear relationship (r≥0.999 9) within their respective mass concentration ranges,the average recovery was 96.49%-103.45% and the RSD was 0.5%-2.8%,the limit of determination was 0.008-0.046 mg·L-1 and the limit of quantification was 0.027-0.154 mg·L-1.The 7 kinds of phenolic acids were all detected in L.lucidus var.hirtus rhizome and the total amount was between 5 811.01 and 11 747.23 µg·g-1 , the average amount was 7 421.05 µg·g-1.The content of 7 phenolic acids was different and the rosemary acid was the highest in all the samples with an average of 7 111.19 µg·g-1 the ratio to the total phenolic acids was 95.8%.The results of principal component analysis and cluster analysis showed that the quality of L.lucidus var.hirtus rhizome from Heze city in Shandong province was better,followed by Wanzhou district in Chongqing. Conclusion:The method was simple,sensitive,accurate,practical and reliable,and is suitable for the content determination of phenolic acid in L. lucidus var. hirtus rhizome.It is expected to provide a reference for the improvement of quality standard and a new idea for the development and utilization of L.lucidus var.hirtus rhizome.

The present study was conducted to develop chicken meat powder (CMP) incorporated ready-to-eat shelf stable fried chicken snacks and evaluate the effect of rosemary leaves extract (RE) incorporation on physico-chemical, microbiological and sensory properties in developed product during ambient storage up to 60 days. Two different groups were made; control (without RE) and second group with RE treated (3% level). In physico-chemical properties, results showed that RE incorporation had highly significant (p<0.01) effect on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), free fatty acid (FFA) and tyrosine value. Similarly in microbiological parameter RE treated product had significantly (p<0.05) lower total plate count (TPC), Staphylococcus count (SC) and significantly (p<0.01) lower yeast and mold count than control. RE incorporation had highly significant effect (p<0.01) on sensory score (texture, flavour and overall acceptability except appearance) of the product during storage period. Therefore, it is concluded that RE incorporation into fried chicken snacks improved physico-chemical (TBARs, free fatty acid content and Tyrosine value), microbiological (Total plate count, Staphylococcus count and yeast and mold count) and sensory parameter (flavor, texture and overall acceptability) of the chicken snacks during 60 days storag

Background: Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) contains active substances that have desirable properties for industrial and herbal medicine applications, e.g., essential oils (1.5­2.5%), tannins, flavonoids, triterpenes, saponins, resins, phytosterols, rosmarinic acid and many others. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of rosemary extract and 20% rapeseed oil substitution for animal fat on storage changes and inhibition of cholinesterases in liver pâté. Results: Preliminary research showed that rosemary extract exhibited antioxidative activity in the system of accelerated Rancimat and Oxidograph tests. Then, rosemary extract was used as an ingredient in liver pâté. During the experiment, meat samples were refrigerated and tested on days 1, 5, 8, 12 and 15 after production. The study proved that the substitution of 20% of animal fat with rapeseed oil decreased the content of saturated acids and increased the content of monoenic fatty acids by approximately 5% and polyene fatty acids by 40%. Conclusions: In addition to antioxidative activity, the rosemary extract affected the health-promoting value of the samples, which inhibited cholinesterase activity during the entire storage period. The extract inhibited AChE more than BChE.

Résumé

Aims: The objective of this study is to use different essential oils (cinnamon, clove, rosemary, almond sweet, sesame, wheat germ, and cedar wood) in concentrated yoghurt as antimicrobial agents to increase shelf life of concentrated yoghurt. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Food Technology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Al-Quds University, Palestine, between January 2015 to August 2016. Methodology: Essential oils were added to concentrated yogurt at a concentration of 250 μl\kg. Antibacterial activity and properties of major borne bacteria such as total aerobic count bacteria, yeast, mold, Staphylococcus aureus, were evaluated by plate count method, (pouring plate method). All yogurt samples were sensory evaluated for flavor, body and texture, and appearance. Total solid content, and titratable acidity of different yogurt samples were also determined. Results: Total solids and pH of concentrated yogurt samples treated with essential oils were only slightly affected. The best three essential oils used in terms of influence on total bacterial viable count and mold count were found to be cinnamon, clove and rosemary. The most acceptable organoleptic properties of treated concentrated yogurt were those samples treated with sesame and rosemary oils. Conclusion: The addition of cinnamon, clove and rosemary essential oils could increase the shelf life of concentrated yogurt.

A GC-MS fingerprint of rosemary oil and an UPLC fingerprint of non-volatile compounds of rosemary were established. Sixty-three kinds of volatile compounds and thirty-eight kinds of non-volatile compounds were identified tentatively using GC-MS and UPLC-Q-TOF-MS, respectively, and most of them are flavonoids, oxygenated monoterpenes, and diterpenoids, etc. According to multivariate data analysis, chemical differences existed among commercial rosemary samples, for example, the essential oil of imported rosemary sample belongs to Morocco/Tunisian type and the one of domestic sample belongs to Spanish type. The results of principal components analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis showed that the imported and domestic rosemary samples were classified into two groups and fourteen components including eucalyptol, (+)-α-pinene, and carnosic acid, were found as the discrimination markers. In comparison with imported rosemary, it can be found that the contents of ten markers such as (+)-α-pinene, o-cymene, and carnosic acid were higher, nonetheless, lower contents for the other markers, in those domestic rosemary samples. Moreover, rosmarinic acid, an important bioactive component in rosemary extract, extensively varied among different samples, indicating that the quality evaluation of rosemary should be concerned.

RESUMEN: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de un enjuague oral de extracto acuoso de Rosmarinus Officinalis (romero) sobre la cicatrización de heridas de mucosa oral en sujetos sanos. Veintiocho estudiantes, de sexo masculino, edad promedio de 22 años, fueron reclutados para un estudio de doble ciego en la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Concepción, Chile. Se creó una herida estándar de 3 mm de diámetro en la mucosa palatina, que fue fotografiada durante un período de 21 días para determinar su tamaño por fotoplanimetría. Los voluntarios recibieron enjuagues orales para ser utilizados a diario desde el día de creación de la herida, 3 veces al día, y fueron divididos en grupo control (enjuague placebo) y grupo experimental (enjuague de extracto de romero). El extracto acuoso de Romero fue analizado por HPLC, mostrando un alto contenido de carnosol (83 %) y ácido rosmarínico (65 %). Se observó una disminución significativa en el tamaño de la herida del grupo tratado con enjuague de romero comparado con el tratado con enjuague placebo al día 3 de cicatrización (20 %, p=0,046, Mann-Whitney). Posteriormente no se encontraron diferencias, completándose la cicatrización antes del día 21 para ambos grupos. Los resultados sugieren que el enjuagatorio de extracto acuoso de romero favorece la cicatrización temprana de las heridas, lo que puede deberse a su alto contenido de carnosol y ácido rosmarínico que han demostrado estimular la cicatrización y poseer actividad antimicrobiana.


ABSTRACT: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a mouthrinse containing an aqueous extract of Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) on healing wounds of the oral mucosa in healthy subjects. Twenty Eight healthy, non-smoking male students, mean age 22 years, were recruited for a double-blind study at the School of Dentistry of the University of Concepción, Chile. A standard 3mm wound was created on the palate with a punch biopsy. The wounds were photographed to assess healing for 21 days. The subjects were instructed to use a mouthrinse 3 times daily for 21 days, starting the day of wounding, and were divided into a control group (placebo) and an experimental group (rosemary extract). The aqueous rosemary extract used for the mouthrinse had a high content of carnosol (83 %) and rosmarinic acid (65 %) as determined by HPLC. We observed a 20 % reduction in wound size by day 3 in the rosemary mouthrinse group as compared to the placebo mouthrinse group (p=0.04, Mann Whitney). Thereafter, no significant differences in wound closure were observed. Healing was completed by day 21 in both groups. The results suggest that the mouthrinse containing the aqueous rosemary extract stimulates early healing of mucosal wounds. This could be due to the high content of carnosol and rosmarinic acid, which are known for their healing and antimicrobial properties.

RESUMEN: El quitosano (CH) tiene propiedades hemostáticas, cicatrizantes y estimulantes del sistema inmune del hospedero contra infecciones virales y bacterianas. Además es biodegradable, no tóxico, antimicrobiano, biocompatible y filmogénico. Estas propiedades han sido utilizadas para acarrear y liberar compuestos bioactivos para sus posibles usos en la salud humana. Por otro lado, los compuestos bioactivos como los aceites esenciales de gran volatilidad como romero (RMO) [Rosmarinus officinalis] y árbol de té (TTO) [Melaleuca alternifolia], pueden ser alternativa importante de uso como antioxidantes y antimicrobianos que podrían inducir cambios favorables en la membrana de CH. Por lo tanto, se incorporaron aceites esenciales de TTO y RMO (0.25, 0.50 y 1.00% v/v) en membranas de CH por el método de casting y se evaluaron su solubilidad, PVA, transparencia y capacidad de bloqueo de la luz ultravioleta, capacidad antioxidante y de protección del eritrocito humano. RMO y TTO redujeron la solubilidad (28-58%) y PVA (entre 28-58%) de las membranas de CH. Todas las membranas fueron amarillas, ligeramente opacas y con capacidad de bloquear la luz ultravioleta. También, las membranas mostraron relativa baja capacidad antioxidante por el radical ABTS (≈ 6 at 9 %), pero con excelente efecto protector sobre el eritrocito humano (> 63 %).


ABSTRACT: Chitosan (CH) has hemostatic properties and accelerated healing ability to stimulate the host immune system against viral and bacterial infections. It is also biodegradable, nontoxic, antimicrobial, biocompatible, and capable of forming membranes and to carry and to release bioactive compounds. These properties of CH can be useful to carry some volatile essential oils having bioactive compounds (antioxidants and antimicrobials) with potential application in human health as those as rosemary (RMO) [Rosmarinus officinalis] and tea tree (TTO) [Melaleuca alternifolia]. These essential oils were incorporated into the chitosan by the casting method in this study. The physical properties (solubility, PVA, transparency and blocking ultraviolet light) of these membranes with TTO and RMO (0.25, 0.50 and 1.00% v/v), antioxidant capacity and protection human erythrocyte were evaluated. TTO and RMO reduced solubility (28-58%) and PVA (between 28-58%) of CH membranes. All membranes were yellow, slightly opaque and they were able to block the ultraviolet light. Membranes also showed relatively low antioxidant capacity by the radical ABTS (≈ 6 at 9%), but it was accompanied by an excellent protective effect on the human erythrocyte (> 63%).

Objetivo: No presente estudo foi avaliado o efeito do extrato de alecrim sobre a viabilidade de biofilmes monomicrobianos de Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans e Pseudomonas aeruginosa, bem como, sobre biofilmes polimicrobianos de C. albicans associada com S. aureus, E. faecalis, S. mutans ou P. aeruginosa. Material e métodos: Em placa de microtitulação foram formados os biofilmes mono e polimicrobianos por 48 h. Em seguida, foram expostos por 5 min ao extrato de alecrim (200 mg/mL). Solução salina (NaCl 0,9%) foi utilizada como controle. Após, foram realizadas lavagens com salina para remoção de células não aderidas. Para verificação da viabilidade dos biofilmes, após o tratamento, foi aplicado o teste colorimétrico MTT. A absorbância dos poços foi lida em espectrofotômetro de microplacas (570 nm) e os dados foram convertidos em percentual de redução e analisados estatisticamente por ANOVA e Tukey Test (P ≤ 0,05). Resultados: Após aplicação do extrato de alecrim, com exceção do biofilme de E. faecalis, foram observadas reduções significativas da viabilidade dos biofilmes monomicrobianos e polimicrobianos. Conclusão: Biofilmes monomicrobianos de C. albicans, S. aureus, S. mutans e P. aeruginosa, foram afetados pelo extrato de alecrim, bem como, os biofilmes polimicrobianos de C. albicans associada com S. aureus, E. faecalis, S. mutans ou P. aeruginosa em biofilmes polimicrobianos, apresentando significativas reduções de viabilidade.(AU)


Objective: This study evaluated the effect of rosemary extract on Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa monomicrobial biofilms viability, as well as on C. albicans associated with S. aureus, E. faecalis, S. mutans or P. aeruginosa in polymicrobial biofilms. Material and Methods: In microtiter plate, mono- and polymicrobial biofilms for 48 h were formed. Then, they were exposed for 5 min to rosemary extract (200 mg/mL). Saline (0.9% NaCl) was used as control. After, washes were done with saline to remove the non-adhered cells. Biofilm viability was checked by MTT colorimetric assay, after treatment. Absorbance of the wells was read in microplate spectrophotometer (570 nm) and data were converted to reduction percentage and statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test (P ≤ 0.05). Results: After application of rosemary extract, with exception of the E. faecalis biofilm, significant reductions in mono- and polymicrobial biofilms viability were observed. Conclusion: C. albicans, S. aureus, S. mutans and P. aeruginosa monomicrobial biofilms were affected by rosemary extract, as well as C. albicans associated with S. aureus, E. faecalis, S. mutans or P. aeruginosa in polymicrobial biofilms, presenting significant viability reductions. Abstract The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize mupirocin-loaded polymeric nanocapsules using two different oils and to develop and validate an analytical method for quantitative determination by high performance liquid chromatography. The mean size of the nanoparticles was 233.05 nm and 275.03 nm for nanocapsules with a rosemary oil like oily core and caprylic/capric triglyceride, respectively, and a good polydispersity index below 0.25 for both formulations. The nanocapsules showed good stability when stored at 40 ºC and room temperature for 30 days. The quantitative method was performed with a mobile phase consisting of ammonium ammonium acetate (0.05 M adjusted to pH 5.0 with acetic acid) and acetonitrile 60:40 (v/v); the flow rate was 0.8 mL/min, UV detection at 230 nm. The analytical method was linear in the range of 5.0-15.0 µg/mL, specific for both oils, accurate, precise (intermediate precision RSD = 1.68% and repeatability RSD = 0.81%) and robust under the evaluated conditions. Therefore, this method can be performed for quantification of mupirocin in polymeric nanocapsules containing both oils.

Background: Several investigations report to rosemary as a plant rich in bioactive components with antioxidant potential, in this work, a rosemary extract was obtained that combined with ascorbyl palmitate provides a synergistic protection to a high fat diet (palm olein). Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of two extracts of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis): AP10R and AP30R at three concentrations of 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm, on the oxidative stability of palm oil subjected to accelerated oxidation conditions and in a frying process. Methods: Lipid peroxidation of palm olein with and without antioxidants was monitored by measuring the concentration of hydroperoxides and total polar compounds; the thermal stability of the phenolic compounds in the oil was evaluated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Results: The AP10R extract at 2000 ppm inhibited olein oxidation by 30% and 60% in terms of total hydroperoxide and polar concentrations, respectively. The AP30 extract at 2000 ppm had similar inhibition behaviors with values of 27% of total hydroperoxides and 54% by total polar compounds in a time from 20 to 25 h. Conclusions: The results indicated that heating reduces the concentration of polyphenols; this decrease was more evident in olein without antioxidants, reflecting the effect of the polyphenols of rosemary extract on the thermal stability of palm olein.


Antecedentes: Diversas investigaciones reportan al romero como una planta rica en componentes bioactivos con potencial antioxidante, en este trabajo, se obtuvo un extracto de romero que combinado con ascorbil palmitato brinda una protección sinérgica a un sistema alimenticio con alto contenido graso (oleína de palma). Objetivos: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la adición de dos extractos de romero (Rosmarinus officinalis): AP10R y AP30R a tres concentraciones de 1000, 1500 y 2000 ppm, sobre la estabilidad oxidativa del aceite de palma sometido a condiciones de oxidación acelerada y en un proceso de fritura. Métodos: La peroxidación lipídica de la oleína de palma con y sin antioxidantes fue monitoreada midiendo la concentración de hidroperóxidos y los compuestos polares totales; la estabilidad térmica de los compuestos fenólicos en el aceite se evaluó por espectroscopia de fluorescencia. Resultados: El extracto AP10R a 2000 ppm inhibió la oxidación de oleína en 30% y 60% en términos de la concentración de hidroperóxidos y polares totales, respectivamente. El extracto AP30 a 2000 ppm tuvo comportamientos similares de inhibición con valores de 27% para hidroperóxidos y 54% para el contenido de fenoles totales en un tiempo de 20 a 25 h. Conclusiones: Los resultados indicaron que el calentamiento disminuye la concentración de polifenoles; esta disminución fue más evidente en la oleína sin antioxidantes, reflejando el efecto de los polifenoles del extracto de romero sobre la estabilidad térmica de la oleína de palma.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to test the efficiency of plant extracts, metaldehyde and saline solutions, as alternatives to the population control of the snail Bradybaena similaris , and to investigate the effect of the plant extracts in reducing the damage of the snail on Brassica oleracea . The experiments were performed at the Entomology Laboratory of the Universidade Comunitária da Região de Chapecó (Unochapecó), using a random experimental design with nine treatments in triplicate. Five adult individuals of B. similaris were subjected to each trial, totaling 135 snails. The following treatments were tested: cinnamon ( Melia azedarach ), timbó ( Ateleia glazioveana ), rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis ), mate herb ( Ilex paraguariensis ), two concentrations of metaldehyde (3% and 5%), two concentrations of salt solution (5% and 10 %), and a control treatment (distilled water). To evaluate the survival of B. similaris it was checked the treatments every 24 hours, over four consecutive days. The results revealed that the two concentrations of metaldehyde were fully efficient, that the saline solution (10%) had and intermediate efficiency, and that all other treatments were not effective. The treatment with the M. azedarach extract induced a higher consumption of B. oleracea , while the saline solution at 10% and the extracts of R. officinalis and I. paraguariensis inhibited leaf consumption.


RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de extratos vegetais, metaldeído e soluções salinas como alternativas para o controle populacional de Bradybaena similaris e o efeito dos extratos para a redução dos danos sobre Brassica oleracea , em condições de laboratório (Laboratório de Entomologia da Unochapecó, Chapecó, Santa Catarina). O experimento foi conduzido utilizando cinco indivíduos adultos de B. similares para cada um dos nove tratamentos em triplicatas, totalizando 135 caracóis. Os seguintes tratamentos foram testados: extrato de cinamomo ( Melia azedarach ), timbó ( Ateleia glazioveana ), alecrim ( Rosmarinus officinalis ), erva-mate ( Ilex paraguariensis ), metaldeído (3% e 5%), soluções salinas (5% e 10%) e a testemunha (água destilada). Para avaliação dos dados, foi determinada a taxa de sobrevivência de B. similaris a cada 24 horas em um período de quatro dias. Os resultados obtidos indicam que as duas concentrações de metaldeído foram eficientes, a solução salina (10%) apresentou eficiência intermediária, enquanto os demais tratamentos não foram eficazes. Observou-se que o tratamento com extrato de M. azedarach induziu a um consumo maior de B. oleracea , enquanto a solução salina a 10% e os extratos de R. officinalis e I. paraguariensis inibiram o consumo.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary) and Origanum vulgare L. (oregano) are known to have antimicrobial properties, but studies on sporotrichosis are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-Sporothrix spp. activity of essential oils from commercial products and oils extracted from aerial parts of these plants and analyze their chemical constituents. S. schenckii complex and S. brasiliensis (n: 25) isolated from humans, cats, dogs, and environmental soil were tested through M27-A3 guidelines of CLSI with modification for phytotherapics. The essential oils of R. officinalis L. were similar for MIC50 and MFC50 ≤2.25mg/mL for extracted oil; and 4.5mg/mL and 9mg/mL, respectively, for commercial oil. Both products showed MIC90 of 18mg/mL and MFC90 of 36mg/mL. In O. vulgare L., the extracted oil had better activity with MIC50 and MFC50 ≤2.25mg/mL, and MIC90 and MFC90 of 4.5mg/mL, whereas the commercial oil showed MIC50 and MFC50 of 9mg/mL and MIC90 18mg/mL, respectively, and MFC90 of 36mg/mL. Through gas chromatography (CG/FID), thymol and α-terpinene were majority for extracted oil of O. vulgare L., and carvacrol and γ-terpinene made up the majority of the commercial oil. Both essential oils of R. officinalis L. showed 1,8-cineole and α-pinene as major. The fungal isolates were susceptible to all tested essential oils, including in itraconazole-resistant S. brasiliensis isolates. The extracted and commercial oils of the plants presented in vitro anti-Sporothrix spp. activity, and they are promising for treatment of sporotrichosis, including in cases refractory to itraconazole. More studies should be performed about toxicity and in vivo efficacy for its safe use.(AU)


Rosmarinus officinalis L. (alecrim) e Origanum vulgare L. (orégano) são conhecidos pelas propriedades antimicrobianas, entretanto seus estudos na esporotricose são escassos. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a atividade anti-Sporothrix spp. de óleos extraídos e comerciais dessas plantas e analisar seus constituintes químicos. Isolados do complexo S. schenckii e S. brasiliensis (n: 25) de humanos, gatos, cães e solo, foram testados pela diretriz M27-A3 do CLSI com modificações para fitoterápicos. Os óleos de R. officinalis L. foram similares com CIM50 e CFM50 ≤2.25mg/mL para extraído; e 4.5mg/mL e 9mg/mL, respectivamente, para comercial. Ambos os produtos demonstraram CIM90 de 18mg/mL e CFM90 de 36mg/mL. Em O. vulgare L., o óleo extraído apresentou melhor atividade com CIM50 e CFM50≤2.25mg/mL e CIM90 e CFM90 de 4.5mg/mL, ao passo que o óleo comercial mostrou CIM50 e CFM50 de 9mg/mL; e CIM90 de 18mg/mL e CFM90 de 36mg/mL. Por meio da cromatografia gasosa (CG/FID), timol e α-terpineno foram majoritários para o óleo extraído de O. vulgare L., e carvacrol e γ-terpineno para o comercial. Ambos os óleos de R. officinalis L. apresentaram 1,8-cineol e α-pineno como prevalentes. Os isolados foram sensíveis a todos os óleos essenciais testados, inclusive S. brasiliensis, resistentes ao itraconazol. Os óleos extraídos e comerciais de R. officinalis L. e O. vulgare L. apresentaram atividade anti-Sporothrix spp. in vitro e são promissores para o tratamento da esporotricose, inclusive em casos refratários ao itraconazol. Mais estudos devem ser realizados sobre toxicidade e eficácia in vivo para seu uso seguro.(AU)

Improving overall health and quality of life, preventing diseases and increasing life expectancy are key concerns in the field of public health. The search for antioxidants that can inhibit oxidative damage in cells has received a lot of attention. Rosmarinus officinalis L. represents an exceptionally rich source of bioactive compounds with pharmacological properties. In the present study, we explored the effects of the ethanolic extract of R. officinalis (eeRo) on stress resistance and longevity using the non-parasitic nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model. We report for the first time that eeRo increased resistance against oxidative and thermal stress and extended C. elegans longevity in an insulin/IGF signaling pathway-dependent manner. These data emphasize the eeRo beneficial effects on C. elegans under stress.

Résumé

The direct interactive effects of rosemary and acrylamide on the development of motor neurons in the spinal cord remains unknown. Our goal is to confirm the protective effects of rosemary against motor neuronal degeneration induced by acrylamide in the developing postnatal rat spinal cord using a postnatal rat model. We assigned the offspring of treated female rats into control, rosemary; acrylamide group; and recovery groups. This work depended on clinical, histopathological, morphometrically, immunohistochemical and genetic methods. In the acrylamide group, we observed oxidation, motor neuron degeneration, apoptosis, myelin degeneration, neurofilament reduction, reactive gliosis. Whoever, concomitant rosemary intake and withdrawal of acrylamide modulate these effects. These findings proof that dietary rosemary can directly protect motor neuron against acrylamide toxicity in the mammalian developing spinal cord.
