To explain the scope of the qualitative approach to undergraduate students of healthcare sciences is a challenge for those of us who must translate the anthropological and social perspectives to students used to operate within nature/culture and science/belief dichotomies. This challenge involves teaching to look beyond these dichotomies and forces us, as lecturers, to overcome the barriers or limited understanding that often characterize health professionals' relation to what qualitative approach can offer to them. Based upon the teaching experience of the authors, this article aims to reflect about the emergence of these challenges, turning, therefore, to examples of qualitative research design in the speech and hearing program at the faculty of medicine of the University of Chile. We believe that an early approach to qualitative methodologies would allow undergraduate students to develop a critical vision in relation to reductive dichotomies, in addition to promoting an understanding of health as an individual and collective phenomenon, and of medicine as a trans disciplinary field of work.

Résumé

Biochemistry experiment is an experimental module associated with biochemistry curriculum. In the context of deepening the education reform on innovation & entrepreneurship, integrating the concept of innovation & entrepreneurship with the experimental course is an effective way for the biology discipline to foster professional talents with strong engineering ability and innovation & entrepreneurship ability. Outcome-based education (OBE) is a new concept for education. Guided by this concept, we encouraged students to propose and take part in research projects, redesigned the time frame for research project-based experiment teaching, and implemented a multi-dimensional evaluation system along the entire teaching process. Furthermore, we integrated the concept of innovation & entrepreneurship for training undergraduates during the teaching process of biochemistry experiment. These measures not only boosted the students' interest in research and innovation, but also guided the teachers to participate in the entire process, which helped improving the engineering ability and innovation & entrepreneurship ability of the students.

Résumé

Background: The use of body painting as a method of engaging students in the learning of anatomy has beendemonstrated as being beneficial to knowledge retention amongst medical students. However, the benefit of theuse of body painting as an educational tool for non-medical students learning anatomy is relatively understudied.Aims: This research aimed to assess the perceptions of first year non-medical tertiary students on the use ofbody painting as an engaging and useful tool for learning human anatomy. A secondary aim was to determine ifstudents’ assessment of the activity differed between those enrolled in a generalised Medical Science degreecompared to those in a Clinical Health Science degree with a specific career path.Materials and Methods: A total of two hundred first-year students divided between a Medical Science degree(n=101) and the Clinical Health Sciences (n = 99) were surveyed using a combination of Likert scale and openended responses to determine if students thought body painting had a place in anatomy teaching. Results: Quantitative results found no significant difference in the reported level of enjoyment experiencedduring body painting activities, with students finding the activity reasonably enjoyable (3.6-3.8/5), howeverClinical Health Science students found the activity most useful as a learning tool (3.9/5; p d” 0.01). Thematicinductive analysis revealed that students from both cohorts found the activity fun and interactive and that itpromoted engagement and information retention. Students also recognised the benefit of the activity for visualand kinaesthetic learners. Clinical Health science students were the only cohort to report on how body paintinghelped linked to their future in clinical practice. Conclusions: Student feedback supports the use of body painting as a learning tool in human anatomy in nonmedical degree programs, and contributes to the development of a stronger undergraduate anatomy teachingprogram.

Résumé

Objectives: To obtain feedback from the 1st Professional MBBS students on their perception of the existing method of lecture classes in Biochemistry. Method: A semi-structured questionnaire based study was conducted at the Department of Biochemistry, Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. The subjects were the 1st Professional MBBS students in the 1st semester of the academic year 2008 – 2009. Results: Three items with the highest and least Satisfaction Index were segregated and compared against an ‘average satisfaction’ of 66.67%. The summary of the consolidated observation on the most appreciated and least appreciated aspects and suggestions for improvements were taken into consideration and discussed. Further, Interpretation of the feedback reflected that the learners still preferred to be taught in a predominantly individualized care-based environment. Conclusion: Feedback from the students facilitates a change in preconceived notions about teachinglearning principles on the part of the faculty. At the same time, it is evident from the feedback obtained that the students still prefer to be taught in an individualized care-based environment which reflects their lack of or incomplete attitudinal shift towards the more institutionalized care-based environment of a medical education institution.

Résumé

The curricula for Japanese medical schools are being dramatically reformed. Under these conditions, the number of hours allocated to the anatomical dissection course has decreased in the last decade. In the current environment of understaffing, we face a conflict between good educational practice and superior research performance at the University of Yamanashi. To address this problem and to cultivate research-oriented thinking and the teaching ability of medical students, we introduced a novel teaching system in which senior students (3rd to 6th years) serve as teaching assistants (TAs) in the dissection course. In this trial, we undertook the following procedures.1) We performed two surveys of 2nd-year students and TAs to evaluate the performance of the system during the middle and late phases of the laboratory course.2) By referring to the results of the first survey, we simultaneously improved the system.3) Research topics related to anatomy were assigned to the TAs.4) Overall, this system was viewed favorably by both the second-year students and the TAs, although the consistent participation of TAs throughout the term remains to be addressed. By taking these issues and evaluations into account, we will improve the system and propose it as a new elective educational style for Japanese medical schools.
