Día del otorrinolaringólogo en Colombia / Otolaryngologist Day in Colombia

En varios países se celebra el día del otorrinolaringólogo y tiene una fecha distinta en cada uno de ellos por diferentes motivos. Hemos formado parte importante de la historia y nuestro aporte en las diferentes áreas de la especialidad es y deberá ser siempre reconocido por la sociedad entera; sin embargo, en Colombia no teníamos una fecha definida para celebrarlo, por lo que recibimos palabras de felicitación en diferentes días del año. Como Asociación Colombiana de Otorrinolaringología (ACORL), debemos procurar visibilizar nuestro trabajo como especialistas y darle el lugar que merece en la sociedad civil y científica; es por esto por lo que, atendiendo y gestionando la inquietud de una querida asociada, les comparto que esta Junta Directiva ha oficializado el 26 de septiembre como el día del otorrinolaringólogo en nuestro país. Qué mejor oportunidad que esta para hacerles un homenaje a quienes tuvieron la determinación de fundar ACORL el 26 de septiembre de 1961 en Bogotá.

In several countries the Otolaryngologist day is celebrated and it has a different date in each one for different reasons. We have made an important part in history and our contribution in the different areas of the specialty is and should always be recognized by the entire society. However, in Colombia we did not have a defined date to celebrate it. As Association (ACORL), we must try to make our work visible as specialists and give it the place it deserves in civil and scientific society. This is why I share with you that this Board of Directors has made September 26 official as the Otolaryngologist day in our country. What better opportunity than this, to pay tribute to those who had the determination to establish the Colombian Association of Otolaryngology on September 26, 1961 in Bogota

Robert Bárány, a scientist with many interests / Robert Bárány, um cientista com muitos interesses

ABSTRACT Austrian-born Robert Bárány was a scientist with many interests. This article highlights some of these interests and also some personal traits. He enrolled as a surgeon in World War I, was captured by the Russians in 1915 and, while still in the prison camp, was awarded the 1914 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in otology. In 1916, he accepted an offer from Uppsala University, Sweden, and worked there for almost 20 years. He died shortly before his 60th birthday, in 1936.

RESUMO O austríaco Robert Bárány foi um cientista com muitos interesses. Este artigo destaca alguns desses interesses e também alguns traços pessoais. Bárány se inscreveu como cirurgião na Primeira Guerra Mundial, foi capturado pelos russos em 1915 e, ainda no campo de prisioneiros, recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de 1914 em Fisiologia ou Medicina por seu trabalho otológico. Em 1916 aceitou uma oferta da Universidade de Uppsala, na Suécia, onde trabalhou por quase vinte anos. Ele faleceu em 1936, pouco antes de seu sexagésimo aniversário.

La ORL comenzó en Europa y los EE.UU. de Amé- rica a mediados del siglo XIX, acompañando como hermana menos a la Oftalmología. En la costa Este de América del Sur tuvo un desarrollo similar. Argentina designó a Eduardo Obejero Profesor de Otología, Laringología y Rinología en 1893 y en 1919 a Eliseo Segura; Uruguay nombró profesor de ORL a Manuel Quintela en 1900 y a Justo M. Alonso después de 1929. Brasil, por su parte, a Hilário de Gouveia en Río de Janeiro, Edoardo Rodrígues de Moraes en Bahía, ambos en 1911, y a Henrique Lindenberg en San Pablo en 1913...

Otolaringology began in Europe and Eastern USA towards mid XIX century and some years later in the Eastern countries of South America. Argentina appointed Eduardo Obejero University ORL Senior Director in 1894 and after 1919 Eliseo Segura. Manuel Quintela was appointed in 1900 and after 1929 Justo M. Alonso. Hilario de Gouvéia was appointed ORL Professor in Rio de Janeiro and Edoardo Rodrígues de Moraes in Bahia in 1911 and Henrique Lindenberg in Sao Paulo in 1913...

Una breve historia de la invención del espejillo laríngeo y del espejo frontal / A brief history of the invention of the laryngeal and head mirrors

Se presenta una breve historia sobre el espejillo laríngeo y el espejo frontal y los personajes que participaron en su invención. El mérito principal de haber ideado un sistema para efectuar una laringoscopía recae en Manuel V. García, profesor de música español, quien usando un espejillo dental, un espejo manual y la luz del sol, logró por primera vez observar el movimiento de las cuerdas vocales el año 1854. Posteriormente el mismo método fue difundido entre los médicos europeos por un neurofisiólogo austríaco, Ludwig Türck en 1856, técnica que no tuvo mucha aceptación por lo engorroso que resultaba el procedimiento al depender de la luz del sol. Esta idea de Türck, fue ampliamente superada por Johann Czermak, fisiólogo checo, quien modificó el espejo cóncavo manual, con un agujero central usado por los otólogos para examinar el tímpano, agregándole un cintillo para sujetarlo a la cabeza, con lo que pudo observar las cuerdas vocales con la luz de una lámpara sin ninguna dificultad, trabajo que publicó el año 1858.

A brief history of the laryngeal and head mirrors and of the people that participated in their invention is presented. The main credit for having thought of a system to perform a laryngoscopy is on Manuel V. Garcia, a Spanish music professor. In 1854, he used a dental speculum, a hand mirror and sunlight to observe vocal chords movements for the first time. A couple of years later, in 1856, the method spread among European doctors thanks to an Austrian neurologist: Ludwig Türck. His technique was not very widely accepted because of its dependence on sunlight. Türck s idea was perfected by Johann Czermack, a Czech physiologist. He modified the concave hand mirror with a central hole, which at the time was used by otologists to examine the tympanum, adding a headband in order to attach it to the forehead. In this way he managed to easily observe the vocal chords using light from a lamp, and reported his technique in a 1858 paper.

Breve história da otorrinolaringologia: otologia, laringologia e rinologia: [revisão] / A brief history of otorhinolaryngolgy: otology, laryngology and rhinology: [review]

O nariz, a garganta e o ouvido intrigam a humanidade desde os períodos mais remotos. Tratamentos laringológicos, rinológicos e otológicos, além de cirurgias, já eram praticados por médicos gregos, hindus e bizantinos. No século XX inovações clínicas e cirúrgicas foram incorporadas graças às novas técnicas anestésicas, aos antibióticos, à radiologia e às novas tecnologias. OBJETIVO E MÉTODO: Mostrar a evolução desta ciência ao longo dos tempos, reconhecendo figuras importantes da otologia, rinologia e laringologia por revisão em literatura. RESULTADO E CONCLUSÃO: O conhecimento das evoluções em anatomia, fisiologia, tratamentos clínicos e cirúrgicos, além das personalidades que conduziram a estes avanços é de grande importância para que a ciência médica evolua cada vez mais. A Otorrinolaringologia tem história muito rica, com importantes colaboradores e figuras de renome para a história da medicina. A especialidade foi uma das primeiras a utilizar anestesia local para realização de procedimentos, pioneira em tratamentos com próteses que recuperavam a audição e teve a primazia na utilização de microscópios em cirurgias. Poucas especialidades médicas sofreram tantas mudanças e desenvolvimentos científicos nestas últimas décadas quanto a Otorrinolaringologia que teve a vantagem de incorporar tecnologias na endoscopia, radiologia, microcirurgia e uso da informática.

Ears, nose and throat have intrigued humanity since immemorial times. Treatments for the larynx, the nose and the ear and also surgeries were practiced by Greek, Hindu and Byzantine doctors. In the 20th century clinical and surgical innovations were incorporated, thanks to new anesthesia techniques, antibiotics, radiology and new technologies. AIM AND METHOD: show the evolution of this science throughout the times, recognizing important persons in otology, rhinology and laryngology. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Understanding the evolutions in clinical and surgical anatomy, physiology, treatment modalities, and the personalities that lead to these advances is of great importance for the evolution of medical science. Otorhinolaryngology has a very rich history, with important collaborators and personalities in the history of medicine. The specialty was one of the first to use local anesthesia for procedures, pioneer in treatments with devices that recouped hearing and the use of microscopes in surgeries. Few medical specialties had suffered as many changes and scientific developments in these last decades as Otorhinolaryngology had, with the advantage of incorporating technologies such as endoscopy, radiology, microsurgery and information technology.

Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery training in Puerto Rico

The Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery training program of the University of Puerto Rico, Medical School, is enjoining a full accreditation by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Since its foundation 76 Otolaryngologist--Head Neck surgeons have graduated, the first class was in 1962 and the last in June 1998, ten of them moved to the mainland where they practice or teach in renown universities. Our program is five year's durations, and it includes one year of general surgery and four years of progressive education in the specialty. Experience in the surgical sciences will precede the otolaryngology--head and neck surgery education, two residents are accepted each year
