Résumé

ABSTRACT Visceral Leishmaniasis, also know as Kala-azar, is a parasitic tropical disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania donovani. It is an endemic disease in many countries. It affects approximately 1,5 million people every year, and when associated with mal-nutrition and co-infection it may be fatal. Fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia is its typical clinical picture. Ocular manifestations of Kalaazar are relatively rare and can affect either anterior or posterior segment of the eye. We report a patient with kala-azar presenting intraretinal hemorrhages that regress completely after the successful treatment for visceral leishmaniasis.

A clinical case of phthirus pubis infestation of the eyelids in an eight year old boy is presented. He complained of a bilateral eyelids inflammation for the last two weeks which had not healed with a daily application of a collyrium. Physical examination showed the presence of small dark spheres, of approximately 1 mm. attached to the proximal extreme of the eyelashes. A microscopical examination of these elements permitted to identify adults and eggs of P. pubis. Neither insects nor eggs were found in the scalp of the patient. Treatment consisted in the extraction of the parasite elements by means of a fine forceps after the application of liquid vaseline in the eyelashes. A total of 23 adults insects and 32 eggs was removed. The boy proceeded from a boarding school, where none of the other 27 children was found infested and stayed there form monday to friday, going home for week ends. It was impossible to contact the mother, the most probable source the patient infestation, for epidemiological and prophylactical purposes

Résumé

Myiasis is a medical and veterinary health problem in many animal rearing countries. It is not a new problem in Egypt. A family of 5 persons was infested in the eyes [5] and nose [2] with the larvae of Oestrus ovis. It was concluded that the physicians in the MOH rural health units should keep in mind ophthalmomyiasis when dealing with non-specific catarrhal conjunctivitis, particularly those people who are concerned with rearing of farm animals
