RESUMO
A well established and increasingly popular treatment for patients with renal failure is dialysis. It has tobe performed accurately, so observation and nursing care needs a well-prepared nurse that will help the patient throughout the procedure. Thus, the study intended to analyse the nursing care provided for dialysis patients and to delineate a programme for nurses working in the dialysis units

Thirteen male patients with schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and splenomegaly confirmed by liver biopsy were selected. Blood volume, plasma volume and red cell volume were estimated using [59]Fe before and after Hassab's decongestion operation. Preoperative increase in the blood volume was a constant feature. Increase in the plasma volume was the major contributing factor since the red cell mass showed a slight increase or remained at the upper limit of normal. Post operative reduction in the blood volume amounted to 26.03%, in the plasma volume amounting to 29.9% and the total red cell mass, it amounted to 18.5% as compared to preoperative levels. Thus Hassab's decongestion operation, through removal of the spleen, removal of porto-systemic collaterals and devascularization of the lower oesophagus cutting short of the portopulmonary venous anastomosis could interfere materially with the mechanisms held responsible for the hypervolaemia
