RESUMO

While oil prices raise and the supply remains unsteady, it may be beneficial to use the high content of energy available in food processing wastes, such as cheese whey waste, by converting it to bioenergy. As well, there have been many new waste biotreatment technologies developed recently, which may well be used directly to food processing wastes. Microbial fuel cell represents a new technology for simultaneous use of waste materials and bioelectricity generation. In this study, bioelectricity generation with whey degradation was investigated in a two-chamber microbial fuel cell with mediators. E.coli was able to use the carbohydrate found in whey to generate bioelectricity. The open-circuit voltage in absence of mediator was 751.5mV at room temperature. The voltage was stable for more than 24 hours. Riboflavin and humic acid were used as conceivable mediators. The results showed that humic acid was a few times more effective than Riboflavin. Additionally, four chemicals employed as catholyte. Based on polarization curve, FeCl3 [III] was the best. Maximum power generation and current were 324.8 microW and 1194.6microA, respectively

RESUMO

During the past decades, a significant increase occurred in accidental oil spill in the aquatic environments. In this regard, oil spill in Marine freshwater is still considered as a major environmental hazard. In this research, the experimental data on the sorption capacity of expanded perlite to crude oil were correlated with the equilibrium isotherm of Langmuir, Freudlich, Tempkin and the three parameter Redlich-Peterson isotherms. The results obtained from each specified isotherms were compared and accuracy of the models were favorably discussed. Accuracy of each model using the error function were evaluated. Moreover, the effect of type of objective function on the final results was investigated. To bring up the idea; the sum of square of the average squares of the errors, the sum of the squares of the errors, the hybrid fractional error function, Marquardt's percent standard deviation and Chi-Square objective function were used and the accuracy was obtained using each objective function. The results showed that the Redlich-Peterson model can better represent the equilibrium isotherm data for the crude oil to be up taken on the expanded perlite

RESUMO

Mathematic modeling and simulation of a biofilter system was developed for biofilters filled by three different packing materials such as granular activated carbon [GAC], compost mixed with diatomaceous earth [DE], and compost, respectively, and the effects of biofilter length, packing material, biological activity and the operation time of system on the removal of ethanol [influent contaminant] were studied. The mathematical model for analysis of mass transport phenomena in the biofilter was solved using a two-step, explicit finite difference approximation technique and computer simulation was carried out. The obtained results show that at the early stage of biofiltration the dominant mechanism is adsorption and after saturation of packing by contaminant, biological processes became the dominant mechanism. GAC packed biofilter needs more time to reach to steady state in comparison to the two other packing. GAC is the best adsorbent for contaminant removal; however, compost provides a better environment for microbial growth and activity. The proposed procedure is applicable to analyze the behavior of a biofiltration system used in removal of volatile organic compounds
