RESUMO

Sixty patients were included in this study. Thirty of them were suffering from chronic sinusitis and the others were control. Serum IgA, IgM and secretory IgA were estimated using nephelometry and single radial immunodifussion techniques respectively. These immunoglobulins are responsible for the integrity of the local immune system present in the respiratory mucosa particularly the nasal mucosa. Serum Ig A and serum Ig M were significantly increased in chronic sinusitis group [P<0.05], while secretory Ig A showed an insignificant decrease in the same group [P>0.05]. Those findings indicate that activation of the mucosal immune system e .g. by nasal vaccination might be a useful and promising strategy for preventing upper respiratory infections including nasal infectious diseases

RESUMO

Pure tone audiometry was done for 20 patients subjected to spinal intradural anesthesia and 20 patients subjected to epidural [extradural] anesthesia. The recording of hearing acuity was done 24 hours before and after anesthesia and 7 days postoperatively. Twenty-four hours postoperatively, 55% of the patients subjected to intradural anesthesia suffered from low tone sensorineural hearing loss which was slight to moderate ranged 5-35 dB, while 40% of patients subjected to epidural anesthesia suffered from low tone hearing loss ranging 5-30 dB. This hearing loss returned more or less to normal levels within one week postoperatively. It was transient and required no treatment but was often overlooked

RESUMO

Amplicaecum larvae are a significant parasite infesting tilapia and some predatory fish species at Nasser Lake since 1988. These larval stages were homogenized and prepared as a crude antigen [structural antigen]. The protein concentration was estimated by monitoring the UV absorption spectrum. The positive serum anti Amplicaecum larval hemoglobin was prepared and sensitized in vivo. The highest sensitivity of the hemoglobin was estimated by ELISA technique and amounted to a titer of 1/20 with optical density x 0.554

RESUMO

Ascaridial nematodes are among the well-known parasites infesting fish, birds and mammals. Crude antigen was extracted from Amplicaecum larvae [AL3], Ascaridia galli [adult worm, AG] and Neoascaris vitulorum [adult worm, AV]. The characterization of these parasitic nematodes revealed relative homologous polypeptide chains [MW 25.5 kDa] common to the three parasitic species, whereas the UV absorbance scan mode wave length [WL 200/550 nm] as related to the absorbance [AB] value 0 - 2 recorded an indicative frequency curve. The protein concentration in Amplicaecum, Ascaridia and Neoascaris figured up to 5.47 g%, 4.93 g% and 2.2 g%, respectively

RESUMO

This study was carried out on 67 stalled Baladi ewes, 3-5 years of age. Ten of them were clinically healthy dry non-pregnant, 45 were healthy late pregnant and 12 ewes experienced clinical ketosis. The clinical signs of ketotic ewes appeared suddenly during the last 1-3 weeks of gestation including impaired appetite, unsteady gait, recumbency, head tilt, grinding of teeth and labored breathing. Disease was recorded in about 21% [12/57] of all pregnant ewes. Laboratory investigations revealed a significant [P >0.05] depression of serum levels of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and insulin in ketotic ewes in comparison with dry non-pregnant and healthy late pregnant ewes; while serum levels of total lipids, ketone bodies and alanine amino transferase [ALT] were significantly elevated in ketotic group in comparison with non-ketotic and dry non-pregnant ones. A trial for treatment was performed using daily i. v. administration of 200 ml 40% dextrose and 110 g glycerol orally/head for three successive days. The response for treatment was variable

RESUMO

The present investigation was carried out in camels to investigate the effect of dehydration and rehydration on plasma glucose and insulin levels and the results revealed that: During dehydration a significant increase in glucose level, whereas a significant decrease in insulin was recorded: 3 hrs after rehydration both glucose and insulin levels retained normal values: A linear retationship between glucose and insulin was observed at 6.9 and 12 hrs after rehydration

RESUMO

Fifty children suffering from repeated attacks of primary nasal bleeding from the little's area of the nasal septum are the subject of this study. Half of the cases were treated by chemical cautery, the other half were treated by local nasal dressing and application with panthenol and an antibiotic ointment. e.g. terramycin. Recurrence of epistaxis was less in the second group [12%] when compared with that in the first group of cases [44%] within 6-month period of follow up after treatment

RESUMO

The present study was conducted on 32 albino rats to investigate the effect of the alpha adrenergic blocker "phentolamine" on the hyperglycemia induced by propionylpromazine. The results revealed that propionylpromazine injection induced significant increase in glucose levels accompanied with significant decrease of insulin levels; phentolamine injection induced hypoglycemia with increased level of insulin than control; injection of phentolamine with propionylpromazine resulted in a significant decrease of glucose level accompanied with increased insulin level alone and completely counteract the propionylpromazine induced hyperglycemia

RESUMO

This study was carried out on 50 acute maxillary sinusitis patients and 50 apparently healthy subjects. Pure aerobic growth was more frequent in patients than controls [68% and 56%, respectively], also mixed aerobic and anaerobic growth was more frequent in patients than controls [14% and 8%, respectively]. Pure anaerobic growth was observed in one patient, while fungal growth was detected in 2 patients and one control subject. Single microbial species/sample was slightly increased in controls, while 2 microbial species/sample were more frequent in patients than controls [36% and 12%, respectively]. No growth was recovered from 6 patients and 17 controls. H. influenzae, Staph. pyogenes, Strept. pneumoniae and Bacteroides fragilis were the most frequent organisms isolated from patients [26%, 24%, 22% and 10%, respectively], while H. influenzae, Staph. pyogenes, Strept. viridans and Strept. pneumoniae were the most frequent microbes recovered from control subjects [16%, 14%, 12% and 8%, respectively]. Regardless of the underlying conditions, H. influenzae, Staph. pyogenes and Strep. pneumoniae were the most frequent species isolated from patients with acute maxillary sinusitis

RESUMO

Mycological examination was carried out to assess the etiological agent of nail infection in a Veterinarian occupationally involved in mycological investigations. Scopulariopsis infection of the nail was confirmed macroscopically and microscopically. Successful treatment was achieved by oral administration of ketaconazol and topical application with isoconazol sol
