RESUMO

Comparative analysis of Perinatal statistics over one decade [1993/1994 and 2003/2004] and suggest ways to improve it. The hospital records of Salmanyia Medical Center and affiliated maternity units were used to retrieve number of live births, multiple gestations and stillbirths for years 1993+1994 and 2003+2004. The average perinatal mortality rate was 17.2 and 12.7 per 1000 live births for the first and second periods respectively. Major causes for perinatal mortality were prematurity, stillbirth, congenital malformations and perinatal asphyxia. There were more cases of multiple births in year 2003+2004. Prematurity followed by neonatal sepsis were the main cause leading to death. Birth weight specific mortality for < 1 kg for year 2003+2004 was 706.9 per 1000 live birth. The figures of the perinatal statistics have fallen over one decade by 28 percent
