RESUMO

To see the accuracy and role of fine needle aspiration cytology in children with peripheral lym-phadenopathy in our setup. Descriptive study. Department of Pathology Peoples Medical College Nawabshah. January 2002 to December 2004. A total number of 158 children were included in the study having age upto 12 years with history of peripheral lymphadenopathy. Fine needle aspiration cytology was performed with 22 gauge needle attached with 10 ml syringe and without using any local anesthetic. Confirmation of the diagnosis by subsequent surgical biopsy or by a clinical follow up period for at least six months was mandatory. 179 aspirates were obtained from 158 patients. The cytological diagnosis were; 78 [43.6%] reactive, 43 [24.0%] tuberculous lymphadenitis, 27 [15.1%]suppurative inflammation, 15 [8.3%] non Hodgkin's lymphoma, 05 [2.8%] Hodgkin's lymphoma, 03 [1.7%] leukemic infiltration, 02 [1.1%] cytological diagnosis uncertain, 06 [3.4%] material inadequate. 06 cytological diagnosis were false negative and one was false positive. The overall accuracy was 96%. Fine needle aspiration cytology is an initial important diagnostic tool in children having peripheral lymphadenopathy, especially in those rural areas where the surgical facilities are not available. It is a safe, rapid simple and accurate with low morbidity -and only the doubtful cases may go for surgical biopsy

RESUMO

To asses the frequency of HER-2/neu Oncoprotein over expression in invasive ductal breast cancer and correlate it with various prognostic parameters. Cross-sectional study. Department of pathology Basic Medical Sciences Institute, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi. Seventy two [72] formalin fixed paraffin embedded blocks of diagnosed invasive ductal carcinoma were retrieved and 5 p.m thick sections were cut and stained with H and E for the review of diagnosis and grading. The immunohistochemical staining was done on 4p.m thick sections by using Polyclonal Rabbit anti HER-2 ZYMED USA, and ZYMED 2nd generation LAB-SA immunodetection system, to see the HERVneu over expression. Section containing > 50% of tumor cells exhibiting intense circumferential cell membrane stainingscored as positive. Thirty one [31%] positive over expression was observed. A statistically significant result [P<.05] was found between HER-2/neu over-expression and lymph node status and size of tumor. Oncoprotein HER-2 / neu over expression is directly related to the lymph node status and size of the tumor. These patients may benefit from a more aggressive therapy like Herceptin and can also be used as a prognostic marker in the follow up of these patients

Fine needle aspiration cytology was performed with 22 gauge needle attached with 10 ml syringe and without using any local anesthetic. Confirmation of the diagnosis by subsequent surgical biopsy or by a clinical follow up period, for at least six months was done. One hundred seventy nine aspirates were obtained from 158 patients. The cytological diagnosis was reactive change in 78 [43.6%], tuberculosis in 43 [24.0%], 27 [15.1%] suppurative inflammation, 15 [8.3%], non Hodgkin's lymphoma, 05 [2.8%] Hodgkin's lymphoma, 03 [1.7%] leukemic infiltrations, 02 [1.1%] cytological diagnoses uncertain and in cases 06 [3.4%] material was inadequate. RESUMO

This study was conducted in Pathology department of Peoples Medical College for girls, Nawabshah to determine the relative incidence of plasmodium and blood cell parameters in patients suffering from malaria during 1991 to 1992. Blood samples were collected from patients admitted in hospital or referred from out patient clinics for investigation of febrile illness. Four hundred eight-one men. Women and children reported positive for malarial parasite in their peripheral blood film. Their haematology was assessed. Plasmodium falciparum was the most common malarial parasite [64.5%] followed by plasmodium Vivax [34.3%] P. malariae [0.41%], while mixed infection was found in 0.83% of cases. All patients showed a lower than normal haemoglobin, red cell count and haematocrit value; These were significantly lower in patients with plasmodium falciparum falciparum infection than with plasmodium Vivax. The MCV, MCH, MCHC, Platelets count and white cell count were not significantly disturbed. This study shows that there is higher prevalence of plasmodium falciparum, so accurate speciation is essential towards preventing morbidity and mortality as Plasmodium falciparum causes a much more severe form of malaria. The haematological are changes corresponding with the changes occurring in hemolytic anaemias. These changes were more pronounced in plasmodium falciparum infection

RESUMO

Physiological variations in the blood group distribution in different parts of the world or different races in the same country are commonly observed. The present study has been carried out to evaluate the distribution and pattern of different blood groups in this part of the country [SINDH] and it is compared with the distribution of blood groups in other countries and also in different cities of Pakistan. The results show that in our population blood group "B" is more common and constitutes 30% of total population while it is very low in U.S.A. and England population. The incidence of glood group "A" in U.S.A. and England is more than 40% whereas incidence of group "A" in our study less than 25%. In conclusion we found that our results are different from the results of U.S.A. and England but are very close to the studies carried in different parts of the country and also in India
