RESUMO

Punica granatum L. var. nana [ornamental pomegranate] belongs to family Punicaceae. It is popularly planted in gardens for ornament. The root, stem bark and to a lesser extent fruit rind of the edible pomegranate had been commonly used as a vermifugal or taenicidal agent on tapeworms. By reviewing the literature, no botanical studies were done on Punica grantum L.var. nana, so this study aims for characterization and identification of this plant in both entire and powdered forms

RESUMO

The genus Ruellia L. is sometimes called Dipteracanthus, it comprises about 150 species native to tropical and temperate North and South America. Ruellia brittoniana Leonard is known as Britton's wild petunia, wild petunia, Mexican bluebell and Ruellia tweediana Grisebach. Some species of genus Ruellia are used medicinally to cure gonorrhoea, syphilis, eye sores and in renal infections

RESUMO

Mangled extremities are associated with high rate of amputations and non-functional limbs. Factors responsible for such poor outcome were studied. Thirty patients with mangled extremities underwent vascular reconstruction, orthopedic fixation and soft tissue coverage sequentially, as required. Vascular injuries were treated using autogenous vein, primary repair, ligation and observation. Fracture fixation of 26 extremities included closed management [17 fractures and 2 dislocations], external or internal fixation. Twenty-eight patients had soft tissue injuries that required primary closure. Split-thickness skin grafts, fasciocutaneous flaps, muscle flaps and a fasciocutaneous and a muscle flap. Two out of 14 nerve injuries were successfully repaired early. Functional limb salvage was achieved in 23 patients. Two non-functional upper extremities resulted from non-repairable nerve injuries. Two amputations resulted from none or failure of revascularization. Three patients died from associated severe head injuries. Successful salvage of mangled extremity can be achieved by implementing a multidisciplinary team approach

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two invasive procedures in the management of acute tubo-ovarian abscesses for women who need preservation of their fertility. The study population consisted of 27 women presented as acute pelvic inflammatory disease with the development of tubo- ovarian abscess. The diagnosis was verified by clinical picture, laboratory investigations [leukocytic count and C reactive protein] and imaging techniques [transvaginal ultrasound and CT]. Twelve women were subjected to transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration of the tubo-ovarian abscess [group A], while the other 15 women underwent operative laparoscopy [group B]. Systemic and local antibiotics were administrated in both groups. Second look laparoscopy was performed to 10 women in group A and 11 women in group B 3 to 6 months after the initial procedure. The results showed that both techniques were successful in the treatment of acute tubo-ovarian abscesses with nearly equal results as regard drainage of the pus, response to antimicrobial therapy and clinical response [drop in temperature, relief of pain and hospital stay]. No complications were reported in both groups. The second look laparoscopy after three months showed that the incidence of extensive adhesions with bilateral tuba1 block was significantly higher in group A than in group B

RESUMO

This study was done to evaluate the postoperative pain relief produced by either caudal block, nerve blocks [ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric, and dorsal nerve of the penis], or instillation of bupivacaine locally into the operative wound, in pediatric patients. These effects were compared with the effect of systemic analgesia using acetaminophen alone postoperatively. Eighty children [mean age 44.8 +/- SD 22. 7 months, range 6 to 118 months] undergoing elective subumbilical operations under general anesthesia, were randomly allocated into four equal groups. Group I was given a caudal block with bupivacaine 0.25 percent [0.75mg/kg]. Group II had selected nerve blocks with the same solution. In group III, their wounds were irrigated with the same anesthetic before closure of the wound. Group IV did not receive any local anesthetic during operation. Postoperative systemic analgesia, in the form of acetaminophen pediatric suppository, was administered according to the requirement. The differences in pain scores among the different groups were assessed. All groups were comparable regarding the demographic data with no statistically significant difference. Our results demonstrated that caudal block was the most effective method for pediatric postoperative pain relief. Nerve block was as effective as local instillation. These results were demonstrated by early recovery, better pain scores, less analgesic consumption during the first 24 hours postoperatively, and early discharge

RESUMO

The goal in cleft lip repair is the restoration of the normal anatomy as far as possible. Most of the attempts and efforts in cleft lip repair had been directed toward the skin incision. In recent years the importance of the functional cleft lip repair with orbicularis oris muscle realignment and a sequential layered closure has been stressed. The aim of this paper was to present the clinical experience with accurate repair of the 2 different functional portions of the orbicularis oris muscle [the intrinsic and extrinsic bundles] in the correction of unilateral cleft lip in 10 cases

RESUMO

Interceed, a fabric composed of oxidized, regenerated cellulose specifically designed to reduce postsurgical adhesion has been used in this study. Interceed has been used in 19 patients undergoing different gynaecological surgery and 19 patients without applying Interceed served as a control in Minia University Hospital and private hospitals of Minia and Assiut. Second look laparoscopy was done within 3 months after laparotomy. Interceed treatment was associated with 42.1% of postoperative adhesion, while postoperative adhesion was 68.4% in of control group. Interceed also provided a significant benefit in reducing the severity of adhesion that did form. The score of adhesion in Interceed treated group was 11 only compared with 46 in control group. In conclusion, Interceed significantly reduced the incidence, extent and severity of postsurgical pelvic adhesions

RESUMO

Fifteen hundreds currently married couples in the childbearing period in one of Assiut rural areas were interviewed to reevaluate infertility problem, child loss and contraceptive practice. Infertility was found to represent more than 13.6% of women in the childbearing period. Out of them, 37.6% were primary infertile and 42.45 were secondary infertile. The percentage of child loss was 22.3% among the total number of live births. The percentage of contraceptive practice among women in rural areas was 10.0% of the total interviewed women. It was concluded that infertility is a major medical and social problem, child loss is still high and contraceptive practice is still low in this rural communities
