RESUMO

An isopod parasite of family Aegidea was collected from marine fish, Sardinella gibbosa [new hosts] over 2-years period from 2007 to 2008. The fish hosts were captured in the coastal waters of Port Said, Egypt. The Cymothoa sp. and Aega sp. were only collected from skin of the new host, Sardinella gibbosa, and described on the basis of female specimens. The morphological characteristics of were discussed in details. Comparing the present specimens with the previously reported Aega sp. showed that the present material belongs to the type species of the genus: Aega psora [Linnaeus, 1758]. Monthly and seasonal patterns in infestation rates [N==593, W +/- SD [range] =50.09 +/- 3.8 g]. Parasitic specificity and prevalence are given Mean prevalence, P = 24 +/- 5.5 and mean intensity, MI +/- SD =28.44 +/- 16.19 and total number of infestation were estimated 59[10.35]

RESUMO

Using of coconut powder [CP] and coconut cream [CC] as source coconut fat to replace milk fat in ice cream manufacture at the rate 25,50,75 and 100% were studied. The mean value of acidity, specific gravity, weight per gallon and viscosity were significantly decreased with increasing the replacement level of Cp and CC in ice cream mixes whereas the mean value of freezing point increased. In addition, ice cream made with coconut fat [in both CP and CC] had improved the mean value of whipping ability. The resultant ice cream products had significantly increased the melting resistance and overrun whereas decreased the specific gravity and weight per gallon with using either [CP] or [CC] at all treatment. Sensory scores for ice cream made with 100% [CP] and 75% [CC] gained high flavour, body and texture as compared with control. Fatty acids content of ice cream products had higher caprylic, capric, lauric and myristic acids than those control sample. It could be recommended to use of [CP] and [CC] in manufacturing ice cream products with contributing good quality and health nutritional benefits

RESUMO

Lymnaea cailliaudia were reared in stock culture and subjected to either 7-day or 60-day acclimatization periods in a complex CaCo[3] media with calcium values ranging from 1.5mg/L to 75mg/L, Following 30-day acclimatization Snail from group I were each exposed to 100-eggs of Clinostomum tilapiae. Snails of group II were each exposed to a 10-eggs. Snails of both experimental regimes were observed for mortality, growth, rate of infection and number of cercariae shed. Group I snails were also monitored for fecundity during acclimatization and following eggs exposure. Calcium levels 1.5 and 75mg/L resulted in snail mortality. Shell growth and rates of infection were positively correlated with calcium maintenance level. Snails with high fecundity prior to eggs exposure subsequently shed more cercariae. In contrast, post exposure fecundity of snails reared in media with up to 30 mg/L calcium were negatively correlated with calcium level, rate of infection and number of cercariae shed. Maximal cercarial shedding occurred at 30mg/L calcium. These results suggest that environmental calcium affect both the distribution patterns of snail hosts of Clinostomum tilapiae and the productivity of intramolluscan infection

RESUMO

Expectations on many aspects over the whole of an individual's life have increased steadily over the past one hundred years due to the improved social conditions, economic well-being, and progress in therapeutic and preventive medicine. The more effective a disease in targeting young persons the more important is its socioeconomic effect due to the loss of potential working capacity. In recent years a number of such diseases has been identified. These tend to decrease life expectancy. This study examines the effect of cancer mortality on life expectancy in Kuwait. The sample consists of the mortality data for cancer in Kuwait for nationals and non-nationals of both sexes for the year 1993. Abridged life tables were constructed according to the method suggested by Shyrock et al. and mortality rates calculated by using the method of Reed-and Merrel. The results indicated that life expectancy in Kuwait would increase to 74.67 years, from 73.02 years at birth, if deaths due to cancer are contained. This would mean adding a total of 1.65 years per person to the expectancy of life of the inhabitants of Kuwait. A breakdown of the Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti population revealed a greater gain [2.15 years] in life years for the Kuwaiti males as compared to the non-Kuwaiti males [1.63 years] There was only a marginal difference between the years added to the life of the Kuwaiti females [1.37 years] and the non-Kuwaiti females [1.39 years]. In brief, irrespective of sex or nationality, there is a significant gain in the years added to the expected life at birth for all inhabitants of Kuwait if deaths due to cancer are avoided by some kind of preventive measures

RESUMO

Hydatid cyst in children is not uncommon in endemic areas. Fourteen cases with hydatid cyst of the lung under 11 years were studied. Hemagglutination test was positive in 75% of patients. All patients presented with one of the complications except one. This fact was relate to the hyperactivity of children as compared with adults. Bronchobiliary fistula proved by bronchoscopy was present in two patients. Abdominal ultrasound was done for most of the patients [10] to exclude associated liver affection. Cases were treated surgically by enucleation of the cyst and plication of the cavity in 12 patients and lobectomy in 2 patients. Postoperative follow up for a period varied from one year to 7 years was satisfactory and cases which recurred were treated with albendazole. Conservation of lung tissue during operation is important, especially in endemic area and gives satisfactory results
