RESUMO

The number of antral gastrin cells [G cells] and their staining pattern was evaluated in 28 gastroscopic biopsies without evidence of Helicobacter-like organisms [HLOs], as a control group, and 42 gastroscopic biopsies with HLOs, as a test group. There was no significant difference in the number of G cells per gland in relation to the presence or absence of HLOs, degree of inflammation, type of gastritis and activity of inflammation [P >0.05]. The intensity of immunostaining was deeper in association with HLOs positive cases [++] than the negative group [+]. The intensity of G cell staining was not affected by the severity of HLOs. The intensity of staining was more in active than quiescent gastritis, specially when associated with HLOs. The degree of gastritis has direct effect on the intensity of staining of G cells, specially when associated with HLOs

RESUMO

This study included 56 patients serologically positive for hepatitis B virus [HBV] markers. These were serologically screened for HBSAg, HBSAb, HBCAb, HBeAg and HBeAb. The inactive stage of chronic hepatitis involved 15 cases of chronic persistent hepatitis [CPH] and 6 cases of chronic lobular hepatitis [CLH]. The late sequelae of chronic hepatitis B virus included 8 cases of liver cirrhosis [LC] and 9 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]. They were characterized by good percentage of positivity for HBeAb [76.3%] and hepatic cellular expression of HBSAg [78.9%] and/or HBSAb [57.9%] in the blood. The active form was presented by CAH and it was different from the inactive form by its positivity for HBeAg [76.3%], hepatic cellular expression of HBCAg [44.4%] and/or HBCAb [72.2%] in the blood. HBSAg was detected more in tissue [76.8%] than in serum [41.3%]. HBCAg was detected in 27.6% of biopsies and HBCAb was detected in 48.2%. HBCAg was correlated more with HBeAg specially in CAH. The correlation of HBSAb and anti-HBe was evident in cases of inactive chronic type B hepatitis

RESUMO

The testicular tissues are affected adversely by zinc deficiency. These changes are correlated with the degree of deficiency. In comparison with the control [C] group, moderate zinc deficiency [MZnD] leads to regressive changes in the adluminal germ cells but not in spermatogenia located in the basal compartments while, severe zinc deficiency [SZnD] can affect both the adluminal and basal compartments. Although, there was numerical difference between the mean tubular diameter of MZnD and SZnD in comparison with the C group, it was statistically insignificant. Also, the spermatic index though showed numerical differences between MZnD, SZnD and C groups, it was statistically significant only in SZnD [P <0.05]. The thickness of the tunica albuginea was the same for C, MZnD and SZnD groups while, for basement membrane thickness, there was mild thickening in SZnD group. The sclerotic tubules and multinucleated giant cells were found only in SZnD group

RESUMO

The present study included muscle biopsies from 12 infants [5 females and 7 males] with Werding-Hoffman disease [WHD]. The mean age of presentation was 11.8 months. History of consanguinity was detected in [7/12] of cases. The infants were presented with a history of typical floppy baby pattern since birth or early in the first few months of life. The presence of large groups of atrophied small muscle fibers and large hypertrophied muscle fibers is the classical microscopic picture. The enzyme histochemistry showed that the atrophied and the hypertrophied muscle fibers are of type I and type II. The electron microscopy showed disorganized Z bands in the atrophied muscle fibers. The diagnosis of WHD needs correlation of the clinical picture, serum creatine phosphokinase, the electromyography, the light microscopy, enzyme histochemistry and the electron microscopy

RESUMO

11 cases of medullary thyroid carcinomas [MTC] were evaluated in relation to the pattern, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Six cases were classified as classical MTC with histochemical evidence of amyloid and 5 cases were atypical without histochemical evidence of amyloidosis. Immunostaining for thyrocalcitonin was positive in 4 out of 6 classical and 2 out of 5 atypical MTC cases. The neurosecretory granules were found in both the typical and the atypical MTC cases. The ultrastructural study is essential in the diagnosis of MTC, specially where the histological and immunohistochemical evaluation is not definite

RESUMO

One of the major drawbacks of any nonsurgical treatment of gallbladder is the stone recurrence. Ablation of the gallbladder would overcome the risk. In the present research, three different chemicals were used for chemical ablation of the gallbladder in dogs and monkeys. The absolute alcohol was found to cause total necrosis of the gallbladder mucosa and obliteration of its lumen in 33.3% of dogs after 6 months and none for the monkeys. Methyl-tertiary-butyl ether and dextrose 50% are less potent in causing permanent mucosal destruction
