RESUMO

Background: Neonates with the maternal premature rupture of membranes are commonly encountered in the clinical practice. The condition has an important implication for the management of neonates, as it is associated with certain risks of morbidity and mortality. The management varies among the physicians. The study aimed at evaluating out the neonatal outcome of the existing condition with institutional practice

Methods: The study was conducted at King Khalid Hospital, Al Majmaah KSA from August 2016 to August 2017. Two hundred neonates born to mothers with premature rupture of membranes were evaluated, monitored and treated in neonatal unit. Septic screening was done in all the neonates and empiric antibiotics were started for all the neonates. Maternal risk factors were taken into consideration. Neonatal outcomes were considered in all cases

Results: There were 111 male and 89 female neonates. Most of the cases were term prom while 68 cases were pre-prom. Most commonly associated complication was feeding intolerance found in 16% of cases. Only two neonates had a positive blood culture for group B streptococci. Maternal high vaginal swab yield group B streptococci in 17 cases. Sepsis developed in three cases. One hundred and ninety eight neonates were discharged home while one patient died of severe sepsis

Conclusion: PROM is a common clinical entity that requires careful handling of the neonates to prevent the mortality and morbidity. With prompt treatment, the outcome can be significantly improved

RESUMO

Background: A deficiency of Vitamin D not only causes poor bone mineralization but also has been implicated in many other chronic diseases. Recent studies have suggested a relevance of vitamin D to reproductive physiology. Moreover, recent evidence is establishing to support the hypothesis that vitamin D status may contribute to the development of metabolic disturbances in PCOS

Aim of the study: To investigate the relationship between Vitamin D level and polymorphisms related to metabolic disturbances particularly Insulin resistance in women with PCOS

Methods: A review of the scientific literature [PubMed Search 1960 to 2017] Pubmed, Embase and CENTRAL were searched to identify randomized controlled trials that investigated The Correlation between Depression and Folate Deficiency as the primary outcome. Identification of papers and data extraction were performed by two independent researchers. We searched for relevant trials in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE [from 1960], Embase [from 1960], and ongoing trial databases; all searches current to October 2017

Results: Eight studies were included enrolling 1225 women; 779 patients with depression and 446 control subjects. Univariate regression analyses of the weighted means indicated a significant correlation between vitamin D and IR predictability in both PCOS and control women. However, the significance was neutralized after factoring BMI in PCOS women

Conclusion: There is a growing body of evidence suggesting an inverse association between vitamin D status and metabolic disturbances in PCOS in the current literature yet heterogeneity of the conducted studies made it difficult to come out with a solid conclusion. Nevertheless, normalization of vitamin D levels is recommended generally and especially for PCOS patients

RESUMO

Restless leg syndrome [RLS] is a disorder affecting a significant portion of the general population. The syndrome has a strong family component and several comorbid conditions may be associated with RLS. Researches over the past 10 years had highlighted its heritability and had shed some interesting light to this disorder. Restless legs syndrome [RLS], or Willis-Ekbom disease, is a neurological disorder that is characterized by unpleasant or painful sensations in the legs and a distressing, irresistible urge to move them. RLS symptoms worsen during inactivity and at night. Partial or complete relief may result from movement such as walking, stretching, or bending of the legs. Yet, the relief is often temporary and symptoms return when movement ceases

Aim of the Work: this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of restless leg syndrome among Medical Students at University of Tabuk

Methods: we have conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in Tabuk city population, Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted during the period from July to December 2017. The participants who attended the college of medicine at university of Tabuk were included in the study. The total sample obtained was 151. A self-administered questionnaire about restless leg syndrome was filled by the participants

Results: age of the participants was ranged from 18 to 27 years old, with a mean [SD] of 22.72 [1.837], the majority were 6[th] year medical students [39.7%]. 39.7% reported that they had urge to move the legs with unpleasant sensations in the legs, from those who reported they had urge to move the legs with unpleasant sensations in the legs, 80% of them reported that it is relieved by movements

Conclusion: more attention is needed on recognition of RLS among medical students and to manage the aggravating factors of RLS

RESUMO

Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis [IPH] is a rare disorder that is usually characterized by the triad of bilateral pulmonary infiltrates, hemoptysis and iron deficiency anemia. The disease is well known to affect the pediatric age group with conflicting treatment trials. We report a case of a 19 year- old girl with IPH and respiratory failure who had excellent initial response to systemic steroids. To the best of our knowledge this is the first reported case in this age group in the region
