RESUMO

Scabies is a disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. Crusted [Norwegian] scabies is a severe form of the disease that affects immuno-compromised patients like those with AIDS. Nowadays, it is becoming rare because of the availability of better hygienic conditions. Rare cases may be seen in mentally retarded patients as in our case

RESUMO

A42-y-old Libyan man presented with a 4-month history of purple, painless lesions all over the body, hard palate and the upper gums which increased gradually in size. Together with these lesions he had progressive dyspnea with dry cough and fever one week before admission. He was febrile, tachypneic with bilateral decreased air entry and diffuse rhonchi and crepitations. His laboratory makeup showed mild anemia and thrombocytopenia with severe lymphopenia. His LDH was normal and the chest X-ray revealed right-sided basal opacity with gross interstitial infiltrates. His blood gases showed hypoxia. Two ELISA tests as well as a western blot were positive for HIV but no CD4 or viral load were available. He refused to do biopsy of the lesions. The patient was treated empirically for Pneumocystis carinii with Bactrim without improvement and he died after 4 weeks

RESUMO

Human toxocariasis is caused by the presence of die larvae of Toxocara canis in the human host. It is a systemic disease that can have a sub-clinical course or can present under various clinical conditions. Most of the affected cases are young children under 5 years of age but the disease can affect adults. The diagnosis is done by the presence of the clinical features and/or by serologic tests. The treatment consists of the administration of anti-helmithic drugs in un-complicated cases in addition to corticosteroids in some cases. We are not aware of any studies about tins disease in Libya. Since the climatic conditions in some of the coastal parts of the country are appropriate to the maturation and survival of the larvae we think that this disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis ofeosinophilia specially in children
