RESUMO

To study the anatomy of the anorectal musculature in the light of a new concept of the anatomy of this region. We used 16 stillbirths with normal anus, ranging in age between 17 and 24 gestation week. Sections were made in the sagittal plan along the anorectal region and the coronal plan at the level of the puborectalis sling. The external sphincter consists of three parts subcutaneous, superficial and deep. The puborectalis sling passes behind the lower rectum crossing the mid line. Every muscle of the anorectal musculature stand as distinct entity. Our findings are in line with the old teaching of the anatomy of this region and that the muscle fibers of the puborectalis and the external sphincter are cut and not just separated in the operations carried out on this region using the posterior sagittal approach

RESUMO

Obstructive jaundice is an uncommon cause of jaundice in children past the neonatal period. Operation on these patients carries some risks. We present a patient with Down's syndrome who developed jaundice, which resulted from recurrent Morgagni's diaphragmatic hernia causing displacement of the second part of the duodenum and obstruction of the common bile duct. We discuss the management and risks involved in these patients. We believe that obstructive jaundice due to Morgagni's diaphragmatic hernia has not been reported before

RESUMO

Intussusception is a common pediatric surgical emergency. The aim of the study is to present our experience in the only institute where pediatric surgery is carried out in the State of Qatar. All cases of intussusception admitted to Hamad Medical Centre, Qatar between 1988-1993 were evaluated. Barium enema was used for diagnosis and primary management and reduction was achieved in 51% of cases. We had no mortality among our patients. Our results, on the whole, were comparable to the results reported from other centers
