RESUMO

Sample of 460 normal preschool children living in Sharkia Governorate were chosen from different nurseries. The children were classified into 8 age groups [6, 9, 12 and 18 months as well as 2,3,4,5 years]. Each group included number of males and females. The skeletal maturity assessment and weight recording were done for each of the studied children. The skeletal maturity was assessed by the scoring methods of the bones of ankle-foot for children below one year and hand-wrist for children from one to five years of age. The skeletal maturity guided by the skeletal ages increased progressively in both sexes from 6 months up to 5 years of age. The males were advanced in their skeletal age from 6 months to 2 years of age. From three to five years of age, the females were advanced in their skeletal age than males. The mean hone ages for both sexes were more advanced than the mean chronological ages at all age groups except at 12 months of age group in female children where the reverse was found. The standard films of the preschool children from one to five years of age were above the 50th percentiles of the British standards in both sexes except at the 2nd year in female children where it was below the 50th percentile. The weight of the preschool children increased progressively in both sexes from 6 months up to 5 years of age. No significant differences in the mean weights between the two sexes except at 12 months which was significant. There was highly significant. correlation of the skeletal maturity to the weight of the preschool children in both sexes
