RESUMO

Data were collected on 99 institutionalized elderly males and females who were randomly selected from 10 paid elderly institutions in Cairo. Information on various demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, dietary intake for 7 days, medication history and nutritional concepts were recorded. Body mass index [BMI] weight/height2 was used to detect under and over nutrition. Results showed adequate intake of micronutrients for both sexes. Percent animal protein from total protein was 45.7%. The majority of vitamins were taken adequately except for retinol and niacin. Iron and calcium intake were adequate. The correlation matrix between indicators and some selected demographic and dietary data were discussed. The multiple regression models of dietary and demographic data on anthropometric indices of elders were also discussed

RESUMO

The influence of an intensive dietary education program in inducing modification of the diet, physical growth and biochemical parameters of children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] was examined on 135 children ranging in age from 3 to 12 years. Patients were divided into two groups: Experimental group [100 patients; 50 males and 50 females] and control group [35 patients; 15 males and 20 females]. Both groups were evaluated twice, before and after the application of the nutrition education program [NEP]. Adequacy of diets was assessed by checking nutrient intake against recommended dietary allowance [RDA]. Estimates of daily energy intake revealed a slight decrease among children who had less than 60% of RDA of calories after NEP. In conclusion, improved nutrition in the present study was observed both in terms of total caloric intake and caloric distribution. The age group that was most affected by the NEP was the age group from 7 to 10 years. Results confirmed that intensive dietary education plays an important role in helping IDDM patients
