RESUMO

Background: Autonomic neuropathy is a frequent cause of morbidity in diabetic individuals. Aim: To explore the effect of different yoga modalities of Ananda Yoga on autonomic modulation and wellbeing in diabetic patients. Method: It was a single blind, non invasive, pilot study. Autonomic parameters and subjective wellbeing were assessed using biofeedback (HRV) monitor and a questionnaire respectively. Results: The mean SDNN in Resting, Energization Exercise, Yoga postures, Meditation and Post session was 29.82±8.89, 59.38±37.48, 45.02±14.86, 38.1±16.96 and 60.13±62.06 respectively. The mean LF in ms² was 252.71±252.66, 778.84±673.53, 399.83±378.05, 769.93±766.03 and 437.55±411.43 respectively. The mean HF in ms² was 141.28±159.52, 377.28±543.15, 133.91±99.54, 265.87±293.45 and 173.85±216.09 respectively. Improvement in subjective wellbeing was statistically significant (p < 0.05) Conclusion: A single session of Ananda Yoga showed statistically significant autonomic modulation and subjective wellbeing improvement in patients of type 2 diabetes. Further studies are needed to explore the benefits of yoga.

RESUMO

Objective: The objective of the following study is to detect genes encoding carbapenem resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Materials and Methods: Antibiotic sensitivity test was performed by standard Kirby Bauer disc diffusion technique and minimum inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics was determined by VITEK-2. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays and sequencing was used to determine the presence of beta-lactamase encoding genes. Conjugation experiments were performed to determine the transferability of beta-lactamase. Isolate relatedness were determined by repetitive-element PCR (REP), enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR and random amplifi ed polymorphic deoxyribonucleic acid (RAPD). Results: All the isolates were completely resistant to the second and third generation cephalosporins tested as well as carbapenems. Susceptibility profi ling of the isolates indicated that 100% retained susceptibility to tigecycline and colistin. Conjugation experiments indicated that blaNDM-1 was transferable and likely through a plasmid-mediated event. All the isolates showed the presence of blaNDM-1 with co association of blaCTX-M-15. REP-PCR, ERIC-PCR and RAPD revealed a single clonal type circulating in NICU environment. Conclusion: Co-production of NDM-1 with CTX-M-15 in K. pneumoniae isolates was detected for the fi rst time in our NICU. Transmission of plasmid carrying these resistant genes to other members of Enterobacteriaceae will increase the incidence of multidrug resistance. Early detection of these genes will help in prevention and adequate infection control by limiting the spread of these organisms.

RESUMO

Introduction : World literature suggests salivary gland tumors account for less than 3% of the head and neck tumors and benign pleomorphic adenoma of minor salivary glands arising de novo is very rare. Objective, case report and Conclusion: A case of pleomorphic adenoma of minor salivary glands in the buccal mucosa in a 55 year-old female is discussed. It includes review of literature, clinical features, histopathology, radiological findings and treatment of the tumor, with emphasis on diagnosis. The salivary glands may present with a diverse range of lesions presenting a challenge to even the most experienced clinician and pathologist. Resection with surrounding dispensable normal tissues is the key to successful treatment of such tumors.

RESUMO

Infantile haemangio-endothelioma of liver is the most common symptomatic vascular tumour of liver. A 6-month-old female was admitted for evaluation of a mass in the right hypochondrium. It extended 5 cm below the right costal margin. USG of the liver revealed multiple hypo-echoic lesions within the liver. Non-contrast CT images showed multiple hypo-attenuating masses of lower density than the surrounding liver. A postcontrast CT revealed intense enhancement of all the lesions. The findings suggested an infantile haemangio-endothelioma of the liver. On follow-up USG after 8 months near complete involution of the mass was revealed.
