RESUMO

To present initial experience of the first 71 cases of cementless total hip replacement in Al Razi Hospital. Subject and Between 1996 and 2004, total hip replacement was performed in 71 patients [40 male, 31 female, average age 40.7 years, range 17-74] using Zweymiiller cementless prosthesis. The patients were followed clinically and radiologically over an average period of 36 months [range 6-84]. The results were assessed according to Merle d'Aubigne clinical score. Radiological assessment included position of the implant, behavior of the prosthesis/bone interface and signs of osteointegration. Average clinical score during the 3 years' follow-up period was 17.8 points. Most of the implants were in optimal positions. No significant radiological modifications of the implant-bone interface were observed. Zweymuller total hip prosthesis gives excellent clinical and radiological results in short-term follow-up

RESUMO

To compare the difference in diameter of the medullary cavity of the humerus in Arab and South Asian patients in Kuwait. Subjects and In 46 patients [29 Arab, 17 South Asian] treated at Al-Razi Hospital, Kuwait, for diaphyseal fracture of the humerus, the medullary cavity of the humerus on the radiographs of the uninjured [contralateral side] was examined. Bone density was also measured. Statistical significance was calculated by parametric and nonparametric test using SPSS package. South Asians had a significantly narrower medullary cavity [p < 0.05] and higher cortical indices [p < 0.05] than Arabs, and also a narrower external diameter of the humerus at levels 5 and 6 [p < 0.05]. In cases of fracture of the humerus, radiographic measurements of the diameter of the medullary cavity of the uninjured side were essential in selecting the appropriate fixation device

RESUMO

In this prospective clinical and radiological study results of 52 consecutive Duracon bicompartmental total knee arthroplasties in 37 patients with femorotibial arthrosis and rheumatoid arthritis with the average observation time of 3 [2-5] years were analyzed. The study includes 32 women [44 knees] and 5 men [8 knees] with a mean age of 60 years. Details of implant design and surgical technique were given. Two surgeons performed all the operations. The patients were evaluated by an unbiased observer. The Hospital for Special Surgery [HSS] score for both pre- and postoperative assessment was used. The average initial HSS score of 44 [20-65] improved to 85 [60-99] after operation. By subjective assessment, 41 knees were excellent, 10 good and 1 knee had a fair result. There were no revisions. The mean postoperative flexion was 101° [80-120]. The mean anteroposterior angle of the tibial component was 4° of the varus and the mean lateral angle was 3° of the posterior slope. The mean postoperative hip-knee-ankle deviation was 4° of the varus. In Kuwait, the cemented Duracon total knee arthroplasty without patellar resurfacing gave satisfactory clinical results after an intermediate follow-up period of 3 years

RESUMO

Total knee and hip arthroplasty has been in major use during the past 30 years and today there are more than 1 million procedures performed annually throughout the world. The operations are mainly indicated in elderly people due to osteoarthrosis [OA] or rheumatoid arthritis [RA]. Occasionally these operations are performed in young and middle-aged persons due to unusual conditions such as avascular necrosis of the femoral head, femoral neck fracture, congenital diseases or tumors. The indications for the procedure are to relieve pain and to improve function. A tremendous development, both quantitatively and qualitatively, has taken place during a short time period. The operations are highly successful and increase the quality of life for the individual patient. Total joint arthroplasty in Kuwait started in 1984 and it has gradually increased especially during the 1990's
