RESUMO

Arachnoid cysts are congenital lesions arising from the arachnoid membrane. The incidence of arachnoid cysts in the general population is around 0.1% and their most common location is the middle fossa. Arachnoid cysts usually present during the childhood and are identified incidentally. When symptomatic, the most common presentations include headache and seizure. The popular treatment for this lesion is surgery. In this case report, we describe a 12 year-old boy with a middle cranial fossa arachnoid cyst presenting with progressive headache, and bilateral subdural hygroma following a trivial head trauma

RESUMO

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis [CSVT] is increasingly diagnosed in neonates. Despite many studies which have addressed diagnosis and management of pediatric CSVT, diagnosis of CVSD in neonates is difficult. A female neonate born by natural vaginal delivery was diagnosed with CSVT after initiation of seizure. The seizure was stabilized and after performing diagnostic tests, the diagnosis of CSVT was made. This report describes diagnosis of this rare condition in a newborn baby in order to make awareness about this serious condition in neonates

RESUMO

Due to the high prevalence of syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion [SIADH]. This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence and relevant parameters of SIADH in children with septic and aseptic meningitis hospitalized at Kashan Shahid Beheshti Hospital between 1996 and 2006. This descriptive study was conducted on 230 patients with meningitis hospitalized in the pediatric wards of Kashan Shahid Beheshti Hospital between 1996 and 2006. Relevant information [age, gender, type of meningitis, serum sodium and potassium, urine specific gravity [USG], blood sugar, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinin, hydration condition] was collected from patients' records. Data was analyzed using Mann-Whitney and Kappa [2] tests. Out of 230 patients with meningitis, 33 had incomplete records and only 197 patients were recruited for this study. Sixty eight cases [34.5%] suffered from SIADH. It was more frequent among 1-2 year old children. According to this research, SIADH was diagnosed in 57% of the 121 patients with hyponatremia, 58.7% of the 167 patients with USG> 1.004, 74% of the 93 patients with serum osmolity <280 mOs/l and 100% of the patients with BUN <10 mg%. Due to the high prevalence of SIADH in septic and aseptic meningitis and its complication, it is recommended to restrict fluid therapy and monitor serum sodium, urine specific gravity and other diagnostic tests for SIADH

RESUMO

Scorpions are widely distributed in Iran. Kashan city has a suitable climate for these creatures [especially Butidae species]. The preset study was designed to determine the epidemiological picture of scorpions in Kashan. In this descriptive study, medical files of all patients bitten with scorpion during 1991-2002 were reviewed. Totally, 367 cases were bitten during the studied period, of whom 67% were male and 33% were female with a mean age of 23.1 +/- 15.1 years. Children aged <9 years were the most commonly affected group [36.5%], while lower limbs were the most commonly bitten site [64.3%]. Most of the patients suffered from inflammation and pain, and unfortunately, 7 cases of death due to scorpion bite were reported. Scorpion sting-associated illness was quite common in Kashan during the study period, therefore, preventive tools and suitable educational programs, especially at schools, are required to alleviate the probable problems
