RESUMO

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a true neoplasm of vascular origin of intermediate malignancy. It can occur in many sites but it is extremely rare within the cranium. Four cases with different ages and presentations have been operated upon and received a full dose of radiation. The clinical courses were discussed in details

RESUMO

In this study we report 10 cases of vertebral segmentation failure with the [bone within bone] appearance with almost complete fusion of the spine suggested ossification of the notochord and perinotochord sheath. Their age ranged from 6-51 year [the mean age was 29 years], there were 5 males and 5 females. Four of our cases were fused in the cervical region, while six were in the thoracolumbar and lumbar regions. The clinical presentation of each case, as well as the radiological findings and the surgical management are discussed in detail. The possible role of the Pax-1 gene and the signalling between the notochord and sclerotome are discussed, concluding that an early defect of the notochord may be responsible for this type of failure of segmentation. A critical review of clinical lessons learned in the operative treatment is also presented

RESUMO

Parasitic infestations in neurosurgical practice have provided diagnostic and therapeutic challenges to neurosurgeons for many years. In this study we present 15 cases [11 males and 4 females], their ages ranged from 5-40 years [mean age 23 years]. Seven cases presented with hydatid disease [5 cranial and 2 spinal], six cases with bilharziasis [5 spinal and one cranial] and two cases with amebic brain abscess. Clinical assessment, laboratory and radiological investigations have been carried out for all patients. Combined surgical and medical treatment was used in all of them and histopathological examination was done to confirm the diagnosis. All patients have been followed for 2-7 years and the results are discussed in detail

RESUMO

Neurological complications arising from schistosomiasis are uncommon, but may occur when eggs reach the central nervous system and elicit an inflammatory response. In this study we report 10 cases [8 males and 2 females] presented with intradural intramedullary granulomatous lesion proved histopathologically, to be bilharsziomas. Clinical, radiological and pathological studies are discussed in detail with both medical and surgical treatment. We emphasis on the neurological complications of this disease and its presentation in population at increased risk for acquiring or reactivating this infection with review of literatures
