RESUMO

Background: Differential diagnosis between complete hydatidiform mole, partial hydatidiform mole and hydropic abortion, known as hydropic placentas is still a challenge for pathologists but it is very important for patient management. Objective: We analyzed the nuclear DNA content of various types of hydropic placentas by flowcytometry. Materials and Methods: DNA ploidy analysis was performed in 20 non-molar [hydropic and non-hydropic spontaneous aboltions] and 20 molar [complete and partial moles], formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples by flow cytometry. The criteria for selection were based on the histopathologic diagnosis. Results: Of 10 cases histologically diagnosed as complete hydatiform mole, 9 cases yielded diploid histograms, and 1 case was tetraploid. Of 10 partial hydatidiform moles, 8 were triploid and 2 were diploid. All of 20 cases diagnosed as spontaneous abortions [hydropic and non-hydropic] yielded diploid histograms. Conclusion: These findings signify the importance of the combined use of conventional histology and ploidy analysis in the differential diagnosis of complete hydatidiform mole, partial hydatidiform mole and hydropic abortion

RESUMO

Introduction: Pituitary adenomas have been the most common sellaturcica tumors. There have been many unusual types of pituitary tumors that might neglect by radiologists and clinicians. One of these tumors would be the malignant glioma

Case Presentation: A 62-year-old male has complained from sudden frontal headache, nausea, vomiting, decreased vision, blurred vision and double vision. In skull radiographic, there was an expansion of sellaturcica and a lesion with clear border on T1; heterogeneous; iso - to hypotense; size about 3/5 × 2/5 cm with no surrounding edema that it has homogeneously attracted contrast Lesion, that shown a signal hypointensity on T2 with heterogeneous enhancement. In the coronal sections, the tumor expanded to the suprasellar region and optic chiasmatic that has compressed especially on the left side. Partial tumor resection has conducted. The surgery has done by a transsphenoidal approach. The pathologist has diagnosed a glioblastoma. This diagnosis has confirmed using immunohistochemistry technique

Conclusions: There have been many unusual types of pituitary tumors that might neglect by radiologists and clinicians. One of these tumors would be the malignant glioma

RESUMO

Multidrug resistance [MDR], which may be due to the over expression of P-glycoprotein [Pgp] and/or MRP, is a major problem in neoadjuvant chemotherapy of osteosarcoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Tc-99m MIBI scan for predicting the response to pre-operative chemotherapy. Twenty-five patients [12 males and 13 females, aged between 8 and 52y] with osteosarcoma were studied. Before the chemotherapy, planar [99m]Tc-MIBI anterior and posterior images were obtained 10-min [tumor-to-background ratio: [T[1]/B[1]][10min]] and 3-hr after tracer injection. After completion of chemotherapy, again [99m]Tc-MIBI scan was performed at 10-min after tracer injection. In addition to calculation of decay corrected tumor to background [T/B] ratios, using the 10-min and 3-hr images of the pre-chemotherapy scintigraphy, percent wash-out rate [WR%] of [99m]Tc-MIBI was calculated. Using the 10-min images of the pre- and post-chemotherapy scans, the percent reduction in uptake at the tumor site after treatment [Red%] was also calculated. Then after surgical resection, tumor response was assessed by percentage of necrosis. All patients showed significant [99m]Tc-MIBI uptake in early images. Only 9 patients showed good response to chemotherapy [necrosis >/= 90%] while 16 patients were considered as non-responder [necrosis <90%]. There was no statistical significant difference between non-responders and responders in [T[1]/B[1]] [10min].There was a significant negative correlation between WR% and percentage of necrosis [P=0.001]. On the other hand, there was a significant correlation between Red% and percentage of necrosis [P<0.001].There was also statistical significant difference in WR% and Red% between non-responders and responders [both P< 0.001]. Washout rate of [99m]Tc-MIBI in pre-chemotherapy scintigraphy as well as Red% using pre- and post-chemotherapy MIBI scintigraphy are useful methods for predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy

RESUMO

Mangifera indica [Mango] is used in folk medicine for treatment of different types of diseases, and its anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging activities have been demonstrated. The present study evaluated the effects of commercial [vimang] and hydroalcoholic extract of Mango on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rat. Female Wistar rats were treated with vimang [50 and 100 mg/kg] for 18 days, or hydroalcoholic extract [200 and 400 mg/kg] for 18 days as preventive groups and others with vimang [100 mg/kg] for 8 days, or hydroalcoholic extract [400 mg/kg] for 8 days as treatment groups and also gentamicin [GM] was used at 80 mg/kg/day for eight days, starting from day 10. At the end of treatment, blood and urine samples were taken for measurement of creatinine [Cr] and BUN. The kidney was prepared for histological evaluation. Serum Cr and urea concentrations as well as renal tissue injury increased significantly in GM group compared with the control group. Hydroalcoholic extract of Mango at 200mg/kg was able to reduce plasma Cr and urea concentrations significantly as well as kidney tissue necrosis. Vimang [50 and 100 mg/kg] and hydroalcoholic extract of Mango [200mg/kg] also prevented kidney tissue damage compared with the control group. Mango products were able to improve kidney function in an established model of GMinduced nephrotoxicity in the rat. The beneficial effects of Mango on the rat kidney seem to be dose and time-dependent. However, more investigations are needed to elucidate Mango action on GMinduced renal toxicity

RESUMO

Cutaneous lymphomas are monoclonal neoplasic proliferations of immune cells most frequently T or B cells that infiltrate skin.Development of new diagnostic methods, particularly those for immunophenotyping, have substantially changed classification of these neoplasms. These reasons prompted us to perform this study. To re-classify cutaneous lymphoma and peudolymphomas in Mashhad. We reevaluated the specimens from a recent 10-year period filing in Emam Reza and Omid hospitals pathology archives and selected 46 cases diagnosed as any kind of skin lymphoid neoplasms. Then further histochemical and immunohistochemical staining were performed. Forty-three cases of definitely diagnosed lymphohematopoietic cutaneous disorders were composed of 26 [60.5%] cutaneous T cell lymphoma [CTCL], 16 [14%] cutaneous B cell lymphoma, 7 [16.3%] pseudolymphoma and 1 [2.2%] case of Hodgkin's disease [secondary involvement]. CTCLs were the most common lymphomas of the skin and mycosis fungoides was the most common CTCL. Immunohistochemical techniques can be greatly helpful in diagnosis and classification of cutaneous lymphomas. However, routine microscopic evaluation still remains the principle method for diagnosis, especially when there is a close cooperation between dermatologists and pathologists
