RESUMO
La neuroplasticidad es la capacidad que tiene el sistema nervioso de experimentar cambios funcionales y estructurales como respuesta a las variaciones que se producen en el ambiente interno y externo. Las características de este fenómeno se van develando a pasos agigantados gracias a los avances vertiginosos de la neurociencia en los últimos años. Sus alcances prometen ser alentadores para comprender la intimidad de las condiciones normales y patológicas con sede en el sistema nervioso central y, por lo tanto, para establecer estrategias preventivas y terapéuticas especialmente en el área de la Neurología y la Psiquiatría.Este trabajo presenta una revisión de los conocimientos publicados hasta mediados de 2009 en relación a diversos aspectos teóricos y prácticos de la neuroplasticidad relacionados con la Psiquiatría: estrés, influencias genéticas y ambientales, potencialidades terapéuticas farmacológicas y psicoterapéuticas. A partir de aquí se pretende mostrar cómo el aporte de la neurociencia ha profundizado la comprensión de varios procesos mentales, sus bases biológicas y la importancia de las intrincadas influencias ambientales y genéticas en el desarrollo de diversos fenómenos psicopatológicos. Las magníficas potencialidades preventivas y terapéuticas relacionadas con la neuroplasticidad hacen que sea necesaria una actualización permanente de estos conocimientos.
Neuroplasticity is the ability of the nervous system to experience functional and structural changes in response to the variations taking place in the internal and the external environment. The characteristics of this phenomenon are being revealed at great speed, thanks to the dramatic advances in neuroscience over the last years. Their scope promise to be encouraging to understand the intimacy of normal and pathological conditions stemming from the central nervous system, and therefore, to establish preventive and therapeutical strategies en the field of Neurology and Psychiatry. This work provide a review of the information published until the mid 90's on certain theoretical and practical aspects of neuroplasticity related with Psychiatry: stress, genetic and environmental influences, therapeutic, pharmacological and psychotherapeutic potential. From this point, the aim is to demonstrate how the neuroscientific contribution has deepened the understanding of several mental processes, its biological foundations and the importance of the intricate environmental and genetic influences for the development of different psychopathological phenomena. The astonishing preventive and therapeutic potential associated with neuroplasticity make it necessary to continuously update this knowledge.
