RESUMO

Abstract Growth of plants is severely reduced due to water stress by affecting photosynthesis including photosystem II (PSII) activity and electron transport. This study emphasised on comparative and priority targeted changes in PSII activity due to progressive drought in seven populations of Panicum antidotale (P. antidotale) collected from Cholistan Desert and non-Cholistan regions. Tillers of equal growth of seven populations of P. antidotale grown in plastic pots filled with soil were subjected progressive drought by withholding water irrigation for three weeks. Progressive drought reduced the soil moisture content, leaf relative water content, photosynthetic pigments and fresh and dry biomass of shoots in all seven populations. Populations from Dingarh Fort, Dingarh Grassland and Haiderwali had higher growth than those of other populations. Cholistani populations especially in Dingarh Grassland and Haiderwali had greater ability of osmotic adjustment as reflected by osmotic potential and greater accumulation of total soluble proteins. Maximum H2O2 under water stress was observed in populations from Muzaffargarh and Khanewal but these were intermediate in MDA content. Under water stress, populations from Muzaffargarh and Dingarh Fort had greater K+ accumulation in their leaves. During progressive drought, non-Cholistani populations showed complete leaf rolling after 23 days of drought, and these populations could not withstand with more water stress condition while Cholistani populations tolerated more water stress condition for 31 days. Moreover, progressive drought caused PSII damages after 19 days and it became severe after 23 days in non-Cholistani populations of P. antidotale than in Cholistani populations.

SUMMARY: Volumetric assessment of brain structures is an important tool in neuroscience research and clinical practice. The volumetric measurement of normally functioning human brain helps detect age-related changes in some regions, which can be observed at varying degrees. This study aims to estimate the insular volume in the normally functioning human brain in both genders, different age groups, and side variations. A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted on 42 adult Sudanese participants in Al-Amal Hospital, Sudan, between May to August 2022, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and automatic brain segmentation through a software program (BrainSuite). The statistical difference in total insular volume on both sides of the cerebral hemisphere was small. The insular volume on the right side was greater in males, while the left side showed no difference between both genders. A statistically significant difference between males and females was found (p > 0.05), and no statistical difference in different age groups was found according to the one-way ANOVA test (p>0.05). Adult Sudanese males showed a larger insular volume than females. MRI can be used to morphometrically assess the insula to detect any pathological variations based on volume changes.

Introduction: Neurological stroke is the most common cause of disability and leaves nearly 65% of survivors with sensory, motor and coordinative disabilities. At present, there are no therapies to prevent long-term neurological deficits after stroke. Many neuroprotective drugs are being tested with the aim to ensure these effects. Preclinical studies have shown a modulatory effect of cerebroprotein hydrolysate on synaptic remodeling and facilitated synaptic transmission. Material and methods: This was a hospital-based, open-label pilot study conducted in a tertiary care hospital of North India. All patients admitted with a diagnosis of stroke both ischemic and hemorrhagic, were included in the study. Patients were randomized into two groups. The test group was given cerebroprotein hydrolysate, along with standard treatment for stroke, whereas the other group was kept on standard treatment for stroke as per the latest guidelines, without cerebroprotein. Results: A total of 50 patients of stroke, admitted in a tertiary care center were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 65.7 ± 11.86 years. Twenty-six (52%) were males and 24 (48%) were females. Out of the total 50 patients, 23 (46%) had ischemic stroke and 27 (54%) had hemorrhagic stroke. Twenty (40%) had diabetes, 37 (74%) had hypertension, 8 (16%) were known cases of coronary artery disease, 28 (56%) had dyslipidemia, 22 (44%) were smokers, 7 (14%) had a history of ethanol consumption and 13 (26%) were obese. Mean Barthel score at admission was 21.2 ± 11.3 and mean Rankin score at admission was 3.6 ± 1.37. Mean Barthel score at end of treatment was 53.9 ± 28.72 and mean Rankin score at end of treatment was 2.6 ± 1.65. The mean duration of admission was 6.8 ± 3.57 days. Conclusion: The current study highlights the role of cerebroprotein hydrolysate in improving the neurological scores and reducing hospital stay among patients hospitalized with stroke.

RESUMO

Background: Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) are a spectrum of tumors that develop from placental tissue. We aimed to evaluate the management and treatment outcome of GTN. Methods: Patients diagnosed with GTN presented to Kasr Alainy Center of Clinical Oncology between 2008 and 2017 were included in this study. Patients were assigned to low or high-risk according to the World Health Organization (WHO) scoring system. All data were tabulated and statistically studied by descriptive analysis; comparison between the two groups was done using student t-test for continuous data and Chi-square test for categorical data. Results: A total of 111 patients were studied; the majority of them had WHO low-risk score. In low-risk group, the overall response rate to methotrexate-folinic acid (MTX- FA) or actinomycin D (ActD) was 48.5%, comparable response rate observed between MTX and ActD was 48.2% vs 50%, respectively. Those who received MTX-FA 8-day regimen had higher response rate compared to a weekly schedule, however, no statistical significant difference was observed (51.6% vs 44.4%, respectively, P = 0.586), all low-risk patients who failed MTX or ActD achieved complete remission (CR) with subsequent chemotherapy. Patients with WHO score 5–6 had a significantly lower CR rate compared to patients with scores <5, (28% and 60%, respectively; P = 0.01). Five-years overall survival was significantly lower in high-risk than low-risk patients (79.3% vs 100%, respectively, P = <0.001). Conclusion: Low-risk patients have a survival rate of 100% even if they did not respond to first-line chemotherapy, MTX-FA 8-day regimen seems to be more effective than MTX weekly regimen.

RESUMO

Background: The aim of the present study was to study the clinical presentation of undescended testis (UDT) as regards to age, position, side and study the management on UDT.Methods: Total 41 patients, 50 UDT cases were studied prospectively. Patients below the age of 15 years with history of absent testes in the scrotum were included in the study and patients with retractile testes were excluded. Patients were subjected for ultrasonography (USG) scrotum. Palpable UDT and those were located on USG were subjected for open or laparoscopic assisted orchiopexy or 2 stage Stephen-Flower orchidopexy or orchidectomy. Results: 41.4% patients were between age group of 1 to 5 yrs. 43.9% patients were having right sided UDT. 76% testes were palpable only. 21.9% were having bilateral UDT. 48% testes were present in inguinal canal. In 80% patient’s orchiopexy was done. One patient (2.4%) had postoperative wound infection. Conclusions: In our study the maximum number of cases were recorded between 1 to 5 years of age. Right sided UDT were common presentation. Maximum UDT were palpable. We also concluded that USG remains the specific non-invasive modality of diagnosis and localization. Almost half of them were present in the inguinal canal. Orchidopexy is the most common technique for placement of UDT in the scrotum. There were low complications and high success rate in treating UDT. We concluded that there is need of coordinated campaign between surgeons, pediatricians, general practitioners and community workers for timely intervention of UDT and advice for early approach for treatment.

RESUMO

This study describes ultrasonographic observations of five hepatobiliary diseases in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Fifty buffalo, including 20 clinically normal and 30 hepatobiliary diseased buffalo were enrolled in the study. Complete clinical, radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations and laboratory analyses were conducted. Focal parenchymal lesions including liver abscess (n = 12) and hepatic cyst (n = 6), diffuse parenchymal lesion (hepatobiliary cirrhosis, n = 5) and obstruction of hepatobiliary passages including cholestasis (n = 4), and hepatocholelithiasis (n = 3) were successfully imaged by ultrasonography. Hepatic abscess imaged as a hypoechoic to echogenic circumscribed mass of various diameters with a distinct echogenic capsule. Hepatic cyst imaged as a pear-shaped sac with a bright echogenic margin, anechoic content, and distal acoustic enhancement. In hepatobiliary fibrosis, the liver showed linear bands of increasing echogenicity with less distinct imaging of the portal vasculature. Cholestasis was imaged as dilatation of the gallbladder (GB) with wall thickening and homogeneous or heterogeneous contents. Hepatocholelithiasis imaged as an echoic structure within the hepatic parenchyma, or within and around the GB and bile duct, with more echogenicity of the hepatic parenchyma than normal. Ultrasonography can be an efficient rapid, noninvasive tool for screening of common hepatobiliary diseases in buffalo under field conditions.

RESUMO

Background: sepsis refers to the presence of a serious infection that correlates with systemic and uncontrolled immune activation. Few studies had analyzed eosinophil count as a prognostic marker of outcome in patients with infection. Eosinopenia is an interesting biomarker because the eosinophil count is always measured in clinical practice and the additional costs would therefore be negligible

The aim of this wrk: this study aimed to test the value of eosinopenia in the diagnosis of sepsis in critically ill patients admitted to ICUs

Patients and Methods: this prospective observational, randomized study was conducted on 50 adult critically ill patients who were admitted to ICU of Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital in the period from March 2017to July 2017. They either had sepsis on admission or not. An informed written consent was obtained from patients and/or relatives before starting this study

Inclusion criteria were patients more than 18 years old and less than 60 years that were critically ill either in sepsis or not

Exclusion criteria were patients less than 18 years old and more than 60 years old, patient or relatives who refused to be included in this study, those with hematological cancer, HIV infection, bronchial asthma and other atopic disorders like hay fever, atopic dermatitis and allergic conjunctivitis and increased levels of eosinophil count as part of any parasitic infection or trauma patients

Results: comparison between infected and non-infected studied patients was statistically significant as regard variables of SOFA score, APACHE II score at admission, TLC and Eosinophil count at admission [p-value?0.05]. There were no statistical significant differences as regard length of ICU stay [p?0.05]. Multivariate regression analysis showed statistically significant differences and was independent predictors for infection as follow: total leucocytic count, eosinophil count at admission and SOFA score. The AUC for eosinophil count to predict was 95% with optimal cut off value was 50 cells/mm3 with a sensitivity of 92.85% and specificity of 93.33% with P value <0.001

Conclusion: the result of the present study revealed that eosinophil counts was <50 cells/mm3 at admission time to ICU was a predictor for diagnosis of sepsis in critically ill patients. However, eosinophil counts at admission time to ICU were not a specific indicator of mortality. Recommendations: eosinophil counts are cheap and easily accessible test can be used to guide for sepsis diagnosis and treatment.Larger studies are needed to determine the prognostic value of this test and establish better cutoff values

RESUMO

This cross-sectional study aimed to serve as a pilot investigation to identify the level of discomfort and awkward posture among the workers of a garments manufacturing industry. The study was conducted for both male (54) and female (26) workers working in two different departments - stitching and finishing. Data were collected using both questionnaire and direct observation. As discomfort cannot be measured directly, a questionnaire was used to measure it based on subjective ratings by the workers. For analyzing posture, two objective assessment tools were used – rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) to analyze sitting posture and rapid entire body assessment (REBA) for standing posture. The cumulative scores of discomfort for different body parts were measured. The lower back was found to be at the highest risk as compared to other body parts. Female workers had higher score of discomfort (mean = 2.9615, S.D. = 1.3931) as compared to their male counterparts (mean = 1.2693, S.D. = 0.6538). Similarly, standing workers suffered more discomfort (mean = 2.7272, S.D. = 1.3090) as compared to sitting workers (mean = 1.0909, S.D. = 0.3784). No worker received ergonomically acceptable score for both of postural assessment tools. The mean RULA score was 5.25 and mean REBA score was 5. The results of this study necessitate a company-wide ergonomic assessment immediately.

RESUMO

Ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) is defined as the difference between maximum and minimum intraocular pressure (IOP) during a cardiac cycle. Average values of OPA range from 1 to 4 mmHg. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the source of an irregular IOP waveform with elevated OPA in a 48‑year‑old male. Ocular pressure waveforms had an unusual shape consistent with early ventricular contraction. With a normal IOP, OPA was 9 mmHg, which is extraordinarily high. The subject was examined by a cardiologist and was determined to be in ventricular bigeminy. In addition, he had bounding carotid pulses and echocardiogram confirmed aortic insufficiency. After replacement of the aortic valve, the bigeminy resolved and the ocular pulse waveform became regular in appearance with an OPA of 1.6–2.0 mmHg. The ocular pressure waveform is a direct reflection of hemodynamics. Evaluating this waveform may provide an additional opportunity for screening subjects for cardiovascular anomalies and arrhythmias.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effect of intra-peritoneal injection of purified exudates of axenic Spirulina platensis on the mammalian endocrine and nervous systems. Methods: The intra-peritoneal injection of the cyanobacterial exudates in mice was applied. Sex hormonal levels of testosterone and progesterone were measured using radioimmunoassay while the follicular stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone were evaluated by direct chemiluminescence. In addition, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were monitored in the hippocampus region using spectrophotometric method. The levels of the hippocampal monoamines, dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography while the acetyl choline neurotransmitter was measured by colorimetric method using choline/ acetylcholine assay kit. Results: A sharp disruption in the sex hormones levels of testosterone, progesterone, follicular stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone was demonstrated in the serum of the treated mice. At the same time, a significant reduction in the endogenous antioxidant defense enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase was observed in the hippocampus region of the injected mice. Moreover, levels of dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin and acetyl choline neurotransmitter in the same region were significantly affected as a result of the treatment with Spirulina filtrate. The gas chromatography- mass spectrometer and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of some sterol-like compounds in the cyanobacterial filtrate. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the capability of Spirulina to release detrimental bioactive metabolites into their surrounding that can disrupt the mammalian endocrine and nervous systems.

RESUMO

Endoscopic detection of esophageal varices [EV] especially the high risk esophageal varices [HREV] is recommended in cirrhotic patients. There are several studies about non-invasive markers to predict the presence of EV. The aim of this study was to evaluate platelet count to spleen diameter [P/D] ratio and platelet count to spleen area [P/A] ratio as predictors for EV and HREV in patients with liver cirrhosis. This prospective study included 100 cirrhotic patients without previous variceal hemorrhage or endoscopic intervesion. Biochemical, imaging and endoscopic findings were collected in all patients. Several parameters including P/D and P/A ratio were measured and their association with the presence of EV and HREV was tested. The results showed that only P/D and P/A ratios were found to be independent predictors for the presence of EV and HREV in multivariant analysis. For prediction of the EV formation in cirrhotic patients, P/D ratio at value

RESUMO

Laboratory experiments were conducted to isolate and identify Benlate- (Benomyl) degrading microorganisms from two soil types collected from different locations in Khartoum State, Sudan. Benomyl degradation was studied at two temperatures (28 and 40ºC) in soil treated with three Benomyl concentrations (0.032, 3.2 and 8.0mg Benomyl/g soil) and incubated for 360 days. Potential degraders were also tested in mineral salt liquid medium using Benomyl as a sole carbon source. Degradation percentages were then determined and the most efficient Benomyl degraders were identified by amplification with 16S rRNA gene, sequencing and alignment with deposited sequences in the international gene bank. A total of 64 isolates were recovered from the two soil types, with 59 (92.2%) isolates recovered from the clay soil. Thirty four isolates were recovered from clay soil treated with 8.0mg Benomyl/g soil and incubated at 28ºC. The most efficient Benomyl degraders, with degradation percentages in the range of 44-59, were identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri (Two different isolates), Pseudomonas putida, Acinetobacter johnsonii, Brevibacillus invocatus, Bacillus clausii, Lysinibacillus sp. and Agrobacterium radiobacter.

RESUMO

Montelukast is one of leukotriene (LT) receptor antagonists, which is safe and effective drug as a combined systemic and topical treatment regimen for treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). The present study aimed to evaluate the role of montelukast treatment in modulation of filaggrin R501X and 2282derl4 mutations in Egyptian patients with atopic dermatitis. Total of (32) patients with AD and 16 healthy non-AD volunteers with no allergic disease were enrolled in this study. Patients were given montelukast sodium 4 mg daily for 2 weeks. SCORAD, total IgE levels and eosinophils counts were measured. Genotyping for FLG gene mutations R501X and 2282del4 were evaluated. Montelukast treatment showed significant improvement in AD patients through the reduction of serum IgE levels, blood eosinophils counts and disease severity. FLG 2282del4 mutation could be detected in 76.9% of the AD patients. FLG 2282del4 mutation was modulated in 4 out of 20 AD patients upon treatment with montelukast. Montelukast treatment could improve the skin barrier integrity through its modulatory effect on FLG mutation 2282del4 in the Egyptian patients.

RESUMO

The present study is a trial to improve the reproductive performance of dairy cows following the administration of an immune-stimulant prebiotic drug during the transition period. A total number of 30 dairy cows, 3-8 years old and 1-6 parities, were assigned into two comparable groups: 20 cows were taken Celmanax, as a immune-stimulant prebiotic drug, and 10 cows were left as control. The obtained results showed a non-significant reduction in the rate of retained placenta and the number of service/conception, significant shortness in time of uterine involution and the days open as well as improvement of the conception rate for the treated rather than for the non-treated dairy cattle. The serum IgG and IgM increased, while the serum Nitric oxide decreased from the 30th day before to the 15th day after parturition in the treated group. From the present study, it can be concluded that supplementation of dairy cattle by Celmanax, as an immunopotentiating factor, helps in improvement of the reproductive performance of the dairy cattle incorporation with the increase in the serum immune-stimulant responses of IgG / IgM and the decrease in the serum nitric oxide
