RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in the position of the mandibular condyle within articular fossa by a CBCT after wearing complete denture (CD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT of 34 temporomandibular joints were taken from 9 male and 8 female patients with CB Mercuray(TM) (Hitachi, Japan) before and after wearing a CD for rehabilitation. Position of mandibular condyle within articular fossa at centric occlusion was evaluated with Vimplant2.0(TM) (CyberMed, Korea) on the central parasagittal view and curved panoramic coronal view of the condylar head. A statistical evaluation was done with SPSS. RESULTS: The range of anteroposterior positional rate (AP) of condylar head within articular fossa was -16-5 and -10-12 respectively on the right and left sides. Before wearing CD, the AP rate showed discrepancy between right and left sides (p<0.05). After wearing CD, both condyles showed a tendency to decrease in posterior condylar position (right side; p<0.05). The average discrepancy between right and left side in mediolateral positional rate (MD) was 15.5 and 4.5 respectively before and after wearing CD. The improvement was observed in mediolateral relationship of both condylar heads after wearing CD (p<0.01). Before wearing CD, the average horizontal angle of long axis of condylar head was 79.6+/-2.7degrees and 80.1+/-5.7degrees respectively on the right and left sides. After wearing CD, both condyles were rotated in the same direction in average on axial plane. CONCLUSION: We observed with CBCT the significant clinical evidence in case of positional change of mandibular condyle after wearing complete denture.

RESUMO

Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) occurs when new fibrovascular tissues proliferate onto the chamber angle and obstruct the trabecular meshwork. We report a 62-year-old man who presented with progressive monocular visual loss that supervened on NVG. MR angiography and duplex sonography indicated stenosis of the right proximal internal carotid artery (ICA). A carotid endarterectomy was performed. But visual acuity was not improved. We suggest that early detection of NVG is critical for the prevention of visual loss and that rubeosis iridis and chemosis may be the clue to the presence of underlying carotid stenosis.

RESUMO

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTD) is a hereditary neuropathy with slow progression, whereas Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute acquired neuropathy of immunopathogenesis. A 17 year-old girl with hammertoes and pes cavus developed an acute quadriparesis. The duplication of PMP-22 exons in 17p12-p11.2 was confirmed by genetic study. After Intravenous ingection of immunoglobulin, she recovered to normal activity within one month with improvement of nerve conduction study. We should be concerned with the possibility of Guillain-Barre syndrome if there is rapidly progressive exacerbation on CMTD.

RESUMO

Left-sided gallbladder, a rare congenital anomaly, is defined as a gallbladder located to the left of the round ligament. Rarer is the definitely diseased left-sided gallbladder in the literature. The authors experienced two true type cases of the left-sided gallbladder. One case was associated with portal vein anomaly.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Antitumor effect of granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)- producing murine colon cancer cells was elucidated against intrahepatic challenge of parental cancer cells, which is clinically relevant tumor model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a model of liver metastasis by intrahepatic challenge of CT-26 murine colon carcinoma cells to syngeneic BALB/c mice, GM-CSF producing cells were given as a intradermal vaccine either 14 days prior to hepatic challenge, or in animals with established tumors. Tumor volume and survival were determined. RESULTS: Animals receiving vaccination showed significant systemic protection against the hepatic challenge of parental tumor cells, and in animals with established hepatic tumors significant response was observed with some prolongation in survival. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that GM-CSF-producing autologous tumor vaccine was effective for the protection of host agaisnt the metastatic hepatic tumor model. Even though its efficacy against the established tumor was not as significant as in protection, GM-CSF producing autologous tumor vaccine can provide support for the specific immunotherapy for the metastatic liver cancer.
