RESUMO

We investigated the poor prognostic factors for trans pars plana vitrectomy in the complicated cases of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. A total of 150 eyes in 125 patients with complications of diabetic retinopathy were treated surgically. The postoperative visual acuity was decreased according to Snellen E chart compared to the preoperative in 53 eyes out of 150 eyes. The cases with poor visual outcomes are as follows; 4 cases with rubeosis iridis, 12 of 14 cases with retinal detachment involving three qua tors of the retina including the fovea, 6 cases with increased IOP(>21 mmHg) and 23 of 30 cases with chronic renal failure.

RESUMO

Histiocytosis X is an uncommon multisystemic disease of unknown etiology which is characterized by the accumulation of histiocytes in various tissues, and variable clinical course. In patients with histiocytosis X, orbital involvement is common and has a distinct prediction for the superotemporal orbital bone. Orbital involvement is almost invariably associated with a osteolytic lesion of the orbital wall. Disease confined to orbital soft tissues without bone involvement is rare. We report the clinicopathologic features of an unusual form of histiocytosis X in a 2-year-old female who showed a rapidly growing lower eyelid mass. No other ocular or extraocular involvement was detected. The mass was excised and diagnosis was confirmed by hematoxylin eosin staining, which showed large histiocytes and a number of eosinophils, plasma cells and lymphocytes. In addition, the histiocytes were immunohistochemically stain for s-100 protein.

RESUMO

We investigated the efficacy of high dose corticosteroid therapy in the treatment of traumatic optic-neuropathy. We experimentally damaged the optic nerves of six white rabbits with a Hartman mosquito. Three of the rabbits were intravenously injected with 0.25mg/kg dexamethasone every six hours for a 48 hour period. The others were used as controls. In both groups, the optic nerves were removed after one month and stained with Hematoxyline-eosin, then examined microscopically. No histological differences were found in either the control or the experimental group.
