RESUMO

Abstract The Eriococcidae (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha), are known as felt scales and a family with a worldwide distribution, represented by 33 genera and 92 species in the Neotropical region. Some of these species induce galls on their host plants. The aim of this study is to review and update all the information currently known about the biodiversity of Eriococcidae in Brazil and to redescribe and illustrate Acanthococcus lanatus (Hempel), Acanthococcus campinensis (Hempel) and Neotectococcus lenticularis Hempel because Hempel's original descriptions are very brief and he made no illustrations, and to describe a new species of Acanthococcus Signoret, Acanthococcus papaveroi González, Claps & Juárez sp. nov. A dichotomous key to the Acanthococcus species from Brazil is presented and an updated table of the Eriococcidae known from this country is included, with 34 species and 16 genera in total, each with distribution, host data and type depositories of each species.

RESUMO

The genus Apiococcus Hempel (Hemiptera, Eriococcidae), with redescription of two species. Apiococcus Hempel is a genus from Brazil composed of four gall-inducing species. The adult females of two species, Apiococcus globosus Hempel and A. singularis Hempel, from Brazil, are redescribed and illustrated. Keys to the species of the genus and their galls are given.

The adult female and the first-instar nymph of Acanthococcus piptadeniae (Hempel), from Brazil, are redescribed and illustrated, and two new species from Argentina are described and illustrated based on the adult female. A key to Acanthococcus species with six setae on the protibiae and five on meso- and metatibiae, including Acanthococcus dubius (Cockerell), cited in the Neotropical Region, is presented.

Twenty one species of the scale insects on fruit plants from Argentina are discussed in this paper. A key for the recognition of the species, as well as the synonymy, morphological characterization, and illustration are also included. Data on economic importance and host plant are provided. Diaspidiotus ancylus Putnam is recorded for the first time from Argentina and Crenulaspidiotus lahillei (Lizer y Trelles) is redescribed in this paper.

Many native and exotic plants are cultivated at urban environments, where they provide shade and appeal to our aesthetic sensibilities. Almost no research has been done on the Coccoidea associated with ornamentals in the Neotropics, although they seem especially well adapted for survival in urban ecosystems. The objective of this paper is to provide information about some scale insects families that attack ornamentals in Argentina. This work was accomplished by examining scale insects in Argentine collections, as well as by studying new material collected in the field, or sent for identification by colleagues throughout the country. Ninety species of Coccoidea were identified, belonging to eigth families, and 53 genera. Fifty-two species of Diaspididae, 15 Pseudococcidae, 18 Coccidae, only one species in Asterolecaniidae, Eriococcidae, Lecanodiaspididae, Margarodidae, and Ortheziidae families were found. Seventy-one species are cosmopolitans and 19 endemics. About 190 ornamental species in many different families were affected. A list of the scale insects in alphabetical order, hosts, distribution, economic importance, relevant bibliography, and an alphabetical host plants list, with the scale insects affecting them, are given.
