(AU)

Objective: To determine the association between exclusive breastfeeding and the presence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and acute diarrheal diseases (ADD) in children between 6 and 11 months of age, treated at Hospital Santa Maria Del Socorro Ica between April 2012 and March 2013. Methods: Case control study. Sample: 86 cases of EDA with 172 controls and 21 cases of IRA with 42 controls, selected by simple random sampling. It was analyzed with Chi square, Fisher exact test, and Student's t Odds ratio. Results: When the mother gives exclusive breastfeeding (OR = 0.06; 95% CI = 0.01 to 0.21), have higher education (OR = 0.26; 95% CI = 0.07 to 0.84) and wash your hands before preparing food (OR = 0.08; 95% CI = 0.00 to 0.81), reduces the risk of IRA. Also, when the mother works (OR = 0.365; 95% CI = 0.174 to 0.740) is single (OR = 0.316; 95% CI = 0.127 to 0.787), no water is stored in the home (OR = 0.295; 95% CI = 0.152 -0.548), there is exclusive breastfeeding (OR = 0.330; 95% CI = 0.190 to 0.568), were briefed on LME (OR = 0.479; 95% CI = 0.282 to 0.812), wash your hands before preparing food (OR = 0.240; 95% CI = 0.086 to 0.623) decreases the risk of EDA. Conclusions: Exclusive breastfeeding and washing hands before prepar-ing food are protective factors IRA and EDA. (AU)
