RESUMO

To determine the clinical profile of hypothroidism at King Abdulaziz University Hospital [KAUH] and to report on any differences between males and female, medical reports of patients diagnosed as hypothyroidism > 18 years at KAUH in the period between January 1997 to December 1999 were studied. The following data were collected, age, sex, symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism, cause, presence of hyperlipidemia before treatment, results of hormonal investigations and thyroid antibodies, does of thyroxin replacement. A total of 306 were studied. 273 [79%] were females with M:F ratio 1:8. Spontaneous primary hypothyroidism was found in 247 [90%] females and post surgery was a cause in 5 [15%] males versus 9 [3%] females [P-value 0.001,0.02,0.03 respectively]. Constipation, depression and weight gain was found more in females, 36% versus 18%, 8% in females only, 31% versus 18% respectively [P-value 0.003,0.001,0.04]. Our study showed that primary spontaneous hypothroidism is the commonest cause of hypothyroidism in females while post ablation hypothyroidism is more common in males. Depression, constipation and weight gain were the presenting symptoms more common in females compared to males

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to describe the pattern and trend of celiac disease in an Arab population and to compare the results with those reported in western populations. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no published studies comparing celiac disease in adults to that in children or studying the trend of the disease in Arab populations. A retrospective study of patients suffering from celiac disease who were admitted to King Abdulaziz University Hospital between January 1989 and April 1999. During a 10-year period, 26 patients were diagnosed as having celiac disease. Children constitute 38.5% [10 patients] of the patients while 61.5% [16 patients] were adults. The male to female ratio was 1:1.5 in children and 1:1.6 in adults. The median age at presentation for children was 3.03 years [range = 0.1-13] and 31.3 years [range = 14-62] in adults. Clinical manifestations were mainly gastrointestinal in the children and extra-intestinal in the adults. Gastrointestinal lymphoma developed in 6.5% of the adult group. An increase in the number of adult celiac cases was observed over the last ten years, while children showed a decrease frequency The pattern and trend of celiac disease in Arab populations is comparable to that of Western populations, apart from better compliance to gluten-free diet and lower frequency of gastrointestinal lymphoma in Arabs
