RESUMO

Influence of piroxicam (PX) on glibenclamide (GL) induced hypoglycemia has been studied in rats, healthy human volunteers and diabetics. GL per se has significantly reduced blood sugar levels in rats and in humans. PX per se has significantly reduced BSLs, in diabetics, while having no significant influence on blood sugar level in rats and healthy human volunteers. Prior administration of PX has potentiated the hypoglycemic effect of GL in rats, healthy human volunteers and diabetics. GL, PX + GL administration have also significantly influenced the glucose tolerance test (GTT) in healthy human volunteers.

RESUMO

Dexamethasone 0.33 mg/kg (I.M.) on first day and half this dose thereafter daily, depressed wound contraction, epithelization, tensile strength and process of granulation of wounds in experimental animals. Juice from the leaves of Tridex procumbens (T.P. 1 ml, I.P., daily) resembled dexamethasone in effects on wound contraction and granulation; but it significantly (P less than 0.001) counteracted the effects of dexamethasone on tensile strength and epithelization. TP caused increase in adrenal weight and decrease in thymus weight. These observations suggest that TP exerts a direct pro-healing effect along with an indirect anti-healing influences probably mediated through release of adrenal steroids.

RESUMO

A simple technique using common laboratory materials based on overflow-refill principle is described. The technique provides a retrievable permanent record for re-check, ease of single handed operation, and accurate and dependable volume-measurements. The use of mercury and observer's bias have been completely eliminated. Trustworthiness of the technique was confirmed by comparing the estimated and known volume (0.3 to 2.4 ml) of different objects. Further comparison of volume estimation of rat paw by this technique with that by another method, showed the new method to be more accurate with coefficient of variation of 8.98% as opposed to 15.60 % for the other methods.

RESUMO

To quantify the drug induced changes in cardiac force the methods in vogue use springs and strain-gauge coils, which apply counterforce to oppose cardiac force and thus stop systolic excursion of the lever. The present report pertains to a new technique based on similar principle, utilising induced electromagnetic force as a means of counterpoising in study of contractility of isolated, frog heart. The technique monitered changes in contractility produced by small doses of adrenaline, digoxin, acetylcholine and CaCl2. The plots of estimated cardiac force (in V) against doses (log-units) of the drugs could be made to reveal dose response relation.
