RESUMO

Eating behaviour disorder during early childhood is a common pediatric problem. Many terminologies have been used interchangeably to describe this condition, hindering implementation of therapy and confusing a common problem. The definition suggests an eating behaviour which has consequences for family harmony and growth. The recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition does not cover the entire spectrum seen by pediatricians. Publications are substantive but level of evidence is most of the time low. This purpose of this review is to clarify terminology of eating behaviour problems during early childhood; including benign picky eating, limited diets, sensory food aversion, selective eating, food avoidance emotional disorder, pervasive refusal syndrome, tactile defensiveness, functional dysphagia, neophobia and toddler anorexia. This tool is proposed only to ease the clinical management for child care providers. Diagnostic criteria are set and management tools are suggested. The role of dietary counselling and, where necessary, behavioural therapy is clarified. It is hoped that the condition will make its way into mainstream pediatrics to allow these children, and their families, to receive the help they deserve.

RESUMO

The prolonged civil strife in the North-West Zone of Somalia [Somaliland] has hampered the development of social infrastructure and public health services. There are limited data on HIV/AIDS. In 2004, a sentinel HIV seroprevalence survey was conducted. Blood samples were collected from 1561 women attending antenatal care clinics, 249 tuberculosis [TB] patients and 243 people attending sexually transmitted disease [STD] clinics. Samples were tested for syphilis and HIV. Overall HIV prevalence was 1.4%, significantly higher than that observed in many other countries in the Region. Prevalence was 1.2% among pregnant women 15-24 years, 12.3% among patients with STD and 5.6% among TB patients. The prevalence of syphilis was 1.3% in the pregnant women

RESUMO

To determine the attitude of teachers towards the introduction of sexuality education in secondary school. Three hundred and twenty secondary school teachers with median age of 37 years were randomly selected and included in the study using self administered well structured questionnaires. Greater number of teachers views the teaching of sexuality education as the responsibility of the parents [46.1%] and as such sees home [43.7%] rather than school [38.6%] as the best place to impact such knowledge. Most of them [55.6%] considered ages 10 - 14 years or Junior Secondary School level as the appropriate period for introducing sexuality education. About 68% percent of the teachers perceived sexuality education as mostly beneficial in preventing unplanned pregnancy while 56.0% were of the opinion that it will promote early exposure to sexual relationship.Although age played a role as older teachers between the ages of 45 - 49 years [86.8%], are more willing to teach sexuality education, higher educational qualification had a significant effect on their attitude towards sexuality education [p<0.05]. There is significant relationship between the educational level of teachers and their willingness to teach sexuality education in secondary schools
