RESUMO

Artificial intelligence (AI) keeps an eye on people in clinical studies to find out when bad things happen. This is a big way that AI is changing healthcare. It goes into a lot of detail about how AI has changed this field and stresses how important it is to use complicated formulas, always keep an eye on things, and follow the rules. These days, we have tools like deep learning frameworks, controlled and unsupervised learning models, and others that help us find bad things faster and more accurately. Tracking in real time is possible with early warning systems and constant data analysis. It helps make sure the experiment is done right and puts the safety of the people being tested first. AI-driven tracking systems can only work in an honest and reliable way if they follow the rules set by regulatory bodies such as the FDA and the EMA. The fact that AI has the ability to change the way medical research is done today, with benefits like making it faster and more accurate, makes its problems even more important. The report comes to the conclusion that more research, better teamwork, and a wider use of AI technologies are needed to make it more reliable to find bad events in clinical studies over time.

RESUMO

Deep soft tissue injuries around the thumb can significantly impair hand function if not managed appropriately. Various surgical options exist for treating these complex lesions, including microsurgical flaps, local flaps, and distant pedicled flaps. The dorsal metacarpal artery (DMCA) family of flaps belongs to the latter category. These versatile flaps can be designed as racquet-shaped, island, or bilobed flaps, utilizing the first DMCA alone or in combination with the second DMCA. In this review, we explore the surgical anatomy, techniques, and clinical applications of reversal DMCA flap (RDMA).

RESUMO

Fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), commonly known as dental bridges, play a pivotal role in restorative dentistry, offering patients a means to regain oral function and aesthetics in cases of tooth loss. These prosthetic devices, anchored to natural teeth or dental implants, bridge the gap created by missing teeth, improving chewing, speech, and smile aesthetics. However, the successful deployment of FDPs requires not only their initial placement but also long-term maintenance and an understanding of potential complications. Effective oral hygiene, regular dental surveillance, and professional dental cleanings are essential for preserving FDP longevity. Vigilance is crucial as FDPs, while resistant to cavities themselves, can pose challenges in cleaning around abutment teeth. Complications, including dental caries, periodontal issues, crown or bridge fractures, abutment tooth deterioration, aesthetic alterations, sensory sensitivity, and even prosthetic failure, are potential concerns. Timely intervention and preventive measures are key to addressing these issues. When complications arise, dental practitioners can often repair superficial problems like crown fractures. Profound or recurrent complications may require more extensive interventions, such as fabricating a new bridge or considering alternative restorative options like dental implants or removable partial dentures. By embracing these principles of maintenance and management, patients can optimize the durability and functionality of their FDPs while minimizing associated risks, ensuring a healthy and confident smile for years to come.

RESUMO

The aim was to investigate the long-term effects of metformin ingestion on high-intensity interval training on performance, glycogen concentration (GC), GLUT-4 content, and metabolomics outcomes in rats. Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into baseline, metformin (500 mg daily), and control groups. Training consisted of 4 sets of 10 jumps with 30 s of passive recovery per day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks. The intensity equivalent was 50% of body mass (BM) in the first four weeks and 70% of BM in the last four weeks. The animals were submitted to a weekly jump test until exhaustion at 50% of BM. Serum and tissues were collected at baseline and after 4 and 8 weeks for biochemical and metabolomics analysis. The number of jumps increased in the Control group without a significant difference between groups at 4 and 8 weeks. GLUT4 was lower in the gastrocnemius muscle in the Metformin at the fourth week compared to Control (P=0.03) and compared to Metformin (P=0.02) and Control (P=0.01) at eight weeks. Hepatic and soleus GC were not altered by metformin. Gastrocnemius GC was lower after 8 weeks in the Metformin group compared to Control (P=0.01). Significantly lower levels of pyruvate and phenylalanine and higher levels of ethanol, formate, betaine, very low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and creatine were found in the Metformin compared to the Control. Although chronic administration of metformin decreased food intake and negatively influenced the synthesis of muscle glycogen, it did not significantly change physical performance compared to the Control.

RESUMO

Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (rAAAs) are extremely dangerous. Require attention. This thorough review explores the management of rAAA, focusing on the detection stabilizing blood flow and emergency vascular surgery. Recognizing symptoms such as intense abdominal pain, low blood pressure, a pulsating mass in the abdomen, signs of reduced blood flow to the lower limbs, and back pain is crucial for quick identification. Diagnostic imaging techniques like ultrasound and computed tomography angiography (CTA) play a role in confirming the diagnosis and assessing the risk involved. Properly managing hemodynamics by balancing resuscitation efforts with approaches is essential to control ongoing bleeding. Emergency vascular surgery options include aneurysm repair (EVAR) and open repair; the choice depends on factors like anatomy, stability of blood flow, and surgical expertise. Prioritizing optimization to address any health conditions and closely monitoring patients after surgery greatly contribute to overall success rates. A collaborative approach among healthcare professionals ensures a multidisciplinary strategy during the period emphasizing effective communication. This comprehensive approach aims for outcomes in dealing with challenging rAAAs while considering advancements in research and clinical practices.

RESUMO

The effect of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of combined ethanol extract of S. calycina and C. lutea were investigated on mating behavioural parameters and sex/reproductive hormone boosting potentials in both non-bonny light crude oil (NBLCO) and bonny light crude oil (BLCO) environmentally challenged rats. Forty sexually experienced rats weighing 120-135g were arbitrarily allocated into two groups of twenty rats as NBLCO and BLCO respectively, each group were further subdivided into four groups of five rats and administered orally with 50 mL distilled water (control) and the extract of S. calycina and C. lutea at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight. After 21 days of treatment protocols, the animals were observed for both precopulatory and copulatory activities, sex hormone was also evaluated. The copulatory activities monitored showed that mount latency, intromission latency and post ejaculatory intervals were significantly decreased by the 100 and 200 mg/kg of the extract in both the NBLCO and BLCO-challenged rats (P < 0.05). All doses significantly increased (P < 0.05) the mount frequency, intromission frequency, and ejaculatory frequency in the NBLCO groups while only the 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight was able. Copulatory efficiency was significantly increased (P < 0.05) by all doses in a dose-related manner in the NBLCO groups while only the 200 mg/kg dose level was able to significantly increase (P < 0.05) the copulatory efficiency in the BLCO groups. The hormonal assay showed that all doses produced a significant increase (P < 0.05) in testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and progesterone, with a concomitantly significant decrease (P < 0.05) in prolactin in the NBLCO groups, however, only the 100 and 200 mg/kg was able to able to achieve significant change (P < 0.05) in these hormonal levels in the BLCO groups. Findings from this study showed that the extract has aphrodisiac potentials and also the ability to restore hyposexual activity in rats challenged with crude oil.

RESUMO

@#In tropical regions, numerous tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) play a crucial role as causative agents of infectious diseases in humans and animals. Recently, the population of companion and pet dogs has significantly increased in Vietnam; however, information on the occurrence of TBPs is still limited. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the occurrence rate, risk factors, and phylogenetic characteristics of TBPs in dogs from northern Vietnam. Of 341 blood samples tested by PCR, the total infection of TBPs was 73.9% (252/341). Babesia vogeli (18SrRNA gene – 30.5%) was detected most frequently in studied dogs followed by Rickettsia spp. (OmpA gene – 27%), Anaplasma platys (groEL gene – 22%), Bartonella spp. (16SrRNA – 18.8%), Mycoplasma haemocanis (16SrRNA – 9.4%) and Hepatozoon canis (18SrRNA gene – 1.2%), respectively. All samples were negative for Ehrlichia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophylum. Co-infection was detected in 31.4% of the samples (107/341) of which, A. platys/Bartonella spp. (34/94,10%), Rickettsia spp./B. vogeli (19/94, 5.6%), and M. haemocanis/B. vogeli (19/94, 5.6%) were recorded as the three most frequent two species of co-infection types. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between TBP infection and several host variables regarding age, breed, and living area in the current study. The recent findings reported herein, for the first time in Vietnam, are essential for local veterinarians when considering the appropriate approaches for diagnosing these diseases. Furthermore, this data can be used to establish control measures for future surveillance and prevention strategies against canine TBPs in Vietnam.

RESUMO

Abstract Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an infectious disease predominant in countries located in the tropics. The prediction of occurrence of infectious diseases through epidemiologic modeling has revealed to be an important tool in the understanding of its occurrence dynamic. The objective of this study was to develop a forecasting model for the incidence of VL in Maranhão using the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model (SARIMA). We collected monthly data regarding VL cases from the National Disease Notification System (SINAN) corresponding to the period between 2001 and 2018. The Box-Jenkins method was applied in order to adjust a SARIMA prediction model for VL general incidence and by sex (male or female) for the period between January 2019 and December 2013. For 216 months of this time series, 10,431 cases of VL were notified in Maranhão, with an average of 579 cases per year. With regard to age range, there was a higher incidence among the pediatric public (0 to 14 years of age). There was a predominance in male cases, 6437 (61.71%). The Box-Pierce test figures for overall, male and female genders supported by the results of the Ljung-Box test suggest that the autocorrelations of residual values act as white noise. Regarding monthly occurrences in general and by gender, the SARIMA models (2,0,0) (2,0,0), (0,1,1) (0,1,1) and (0,1,1) (2, 0, 0) were the ones that mostly adjusted to the data respectively. The model SARIMA has proven to be an adequate tool for predicting and analyzing the trends in VL incidence in Maranhão. The time variation determination and its prediction are decisive in providing guidance in health measure intervention.

Abstract Under salt stress conditions, plant growth is reduced due to osmotic, nutritional and oxidative imbalance. However, salicylic acid acts in the mitigation of this abiotic stress by promoting an increase in growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, synthesis of osmoregulators and antioxidant enzymes. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid doses on the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the treatments were distributed in randomized blocks using a central composite matrix Box with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (CEw) (0.50; 1.08; 2.50; 3.92 and 4.50 dS m-1), associated with five doses of salicylic acid (SA) (0.00; 0.22; 0.75; 1.28 and 1.50 mM), with four repetitions and each plot composed of three plants. At 40 days after sowing, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, electrolyte leakage, relative water content, and total dry mass were determined. ECw and SA application influenced the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings. Increasing the ECw reduced growth in the absence of SA. Membrane damage with the use of SA remained stable up to 3.9 dS m-1 of ECw. The relative water content independent of the CEw increased with 1.0 mM of SA. The use of SA at the concentration of 1.0 mM mitigated the deleterious effect of salinity on seedling growth up to 2.50 dS m-1 of ECw.

Abstract Melon production in the Brazilian semi-arid region is subject to the use of marginal waters with high salinity. However, the use of regulators and bioactivators in seed treatment can mitigate the harmful effects of salts in irrigation water. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments with plant regulators and bioactivator in melon seeds for the production of seedlings irrigated with biosaline water from fish farming effluent. For this, two trials with the Goldex and Grand Prix hybrids were carried out separately. A completely randomized design was used in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (pre-germination treatments × water dilutions). In addition to the control, the seeds were treated with salicylic and gibberellic acids and thiamethoxam. The waters used for irrigation were local-supply water, fish farming effluent (biosaline water) and these diluted to 50%. Physiological and biochemical analyses were performed for fourteen days. Biosaline water (5.0 dS m-1) did not affect the emergence of Goldex melon seedlings, but compromised the establishment of the Grand Prix cultivar. Seed pre-treatments with salicylic and gibberellic acids attenuate the effects of water salinity and promote growth modulations, resulting in more vigorous melon seedlings.

Anti-tuberculosis drugs are reported to cause hepatotoxicity, which varies from asymptomatic rise of the hepatic enzymes. Hepatoprotective plants plays important role to protect liver. This study investigated the hepatoprotective potential of the Solanum lycopersicum in rats intoxicated with Isoniazid and Rifampicin (INH+RIF) to induce hepatotoxicity. Thirty wistar albino rats were divided into five groups of six animals each. Group 1 rats were kept control while groups II, III, IV and V were administered with INH+RIF (75+150 mg/kg) orally, for seven consecutive days. For treatment, rats in group III received silymarin while animals in group IV and V were provided with 40 mg/kg and 80 mg/kg of Solanum lycopersicum extract, respectively. On day 0 and 8th blood samples were collected for the analysis of hepatic biomarkers. The data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post hoc test for statistical analysis. Hepatotoxicity induced by INH+RIF resulted in significant elevation of serum hepatic enzymes including Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and total bilirubin while decreased the albumin level. The Solanum lycopersicum at dose of 80 mg/kg significantly reduced the hepatic enzymes AST, ALT, ALP and bilirubin while the albumin level was significantly increased. The treatment had non-significant effect on body and liver weight. Drug induced hepatotoxicity can be effectively treated with Solanum lycopersicum at 80 mg/kg dose.
