RESUMO

A phytochemical study of the flowering aerial parts of Anabasis setifera [Moq.] comprising a phytochemical screening, proximate analysis and investigation of lipoidal matter, carbohydrates, proteins and phenolic compounds was carried out. Kaempferol 3-O-galactoside, vicenin-2 [apigenin-di-C-glucoside] and ferulic acid were isolated; their structure was determined by different spectroscopic techniques. The ethanolic 70% extract was found relatively nontoxic to mice [LD50=9.25 g. of dry extract equivalent to 61.32 g powdered plant/Kg b.wt.]. It exhibited significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antispasmodic and antimicrobial activities, but without ulcerogenic effect

RESUMO

The flowering aerial parts of Haloxylon schmittiana [Pomel] was investigated. Certain pharmacopoeial constants were determined as well as micro- and macro-elements. Investigation of carbohydrates, lipoidal matter, protein and phenolic compounds was carried out. Rutin, quercetin, ferulic and caffeic acids were isolated and identified by spectroscopic techniques. Ethanolic extract 70% was relatively nontoxic to mice [LD50=7g of dry extract equivalent to 40.1 g powdered plant/Kg. b.wt.]. It showed significant analgesic, anti- inflammatory, antihyperglycemic, antispasmodic and antimicrobial activities, but no ulcerogenic effect

RESUMO

Cassia tora L. [Leguminosae] was cultivated for the first time in Egypt. Macro- and micromorphological investigation of the seeds of this plant revealed the diagnostic features by which the seeds can be identified in the entire and powdered forms. Phytochemical screening of the seed and TLC investigation of its successive extractives revealed the presence of anthraquinones, flavonoids, unsaturated sterols and /or triterpenes and catechol tannins. Alkaloids, saponins, cardenolides, oxidase enzyme and steam-volatiles were found to be absent. Pharmacopoeial constants and extractives yielded to selective organic solvents in succession were determined. They can serve as means for confirming the identification or establishing the purity of seeds

RESUMO

The essential oil prepared by steam distillation of the flowering herb of Thymus bovei Benth. [Labiatae] growing in Sinai was analyzed using capillary gas liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry techniques. The oil contained 109 components of which 34 were identified. Phenos and phenolic derivatives constitute 75.6% of the oil, which consists mainly of thymol [63.4%]. The oil showed a broad and powerful antimicrobial activity. It is effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium phlei, Bacills subtilis, Escherichia coli, Neisseria species and Candida albicans

RESUMO

The essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops of Achillea fragrantissima [Forssk.] Sch. Bip. [Compositae] growing in Sinai, was analyzed using capillary gas liquid chromatographic technique. The essential oil contained 52 components, 17 of which were identified [about 85%]. Santolina alcohol, alpha and beta thujone and artemisia ketone account for about 80% of the oil. The oil showed a marked antimicrobial activity against E. coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus
