RESUMO

Background: there is a wide range of anatomical variations affecting the nose, paranasal sinuses [PNS] best diagnosed by Computed Tomography [CT]. These variations may cause impairment of mucociliary drainage of the PNS resulting in sinusitis

Objectives: in this paper, the aim is to study the relationship of the anatomical variations of the lateral nasal wall, nasal septum and paranasal sinuses with the occurrence of chronic rhinosinusitis

Methods: the study included two groups of patients; the first has chronic rhinosinusitis while the second was without chronic rhinosinusitis. Anatomical variations of nose and paranasal sinuses which are nasal septal variations, concha bullosa, agger nasi cells, haller cells, paradoxical middle turbinatesand uncinate process variations were detected in both groups to investigate the relation between the anatomical variations and chronic rhinosinusitis

Results: a case control study was done which showed that there a significant statistical relation between nasal septal deviation and chronic rhinosinusitis

Conclusion: there was a significant relation between nasal septal deviation and chronic rhinosinusitis

RESUMO

Background: hepatitis B virus infection is serious disease affecting more than 400 million people worldwide. It has serious effects on reproductive hormones

Aim of the work: the purpose of the study was to evaluate some of the hormones in patients with chronic hepatitis B male patients

Methods: the subjects of the study were classified into 2 groups; Seventy three patients with chronic hepatitis B without liver cirrhosis ranging from 18 to 46 years in age [group1] and a thirty one control group of healthy volunteers ranging from 19 to 37 years [group 2]. The patients were investigated. Serum levels of Follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH], Luteinizing hormone [LH], Total testosterone [T. TES], Free-testosterone [F. TES], Estradiol [E2], Prolactin [PRL], Sex hormone binding protein [SHGB] were measured. All reproductive hormones were measured by ELISA. Liver functions and hepatitis markers and abdominal US were done for exclusion of liver cirrhosis

Result: as regard SHBG, prolactin, total testosterone and LH, there was significant difference between pateints and control [P=0.000]

Conclutions: hepatitis B virus has serious effects on reproductive hormones

RESUMO

Background: the purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of chronic hepatitis B on semen parameters

Methorts: this case control study was done in Assiut university hospital between August 2014 and August 2015. The subjects of the study were classified into 2 groups; patients with chronic hepatitis B [group1] and a control group of healthy volunteers [group 2]. Semen samples were analyzed for sperm concentration, motilily, morphology and semen volume using a computer-aided semen analyzer [CASA]

Result: seventy three patients with chronic hepatitis B male patients and thirty one men as a control group were included in this study. We found that there is significant difference between patients and control as regard semen volume, sperm concentration, motility and morphology

Conclution: hepatitis B virus infection has serious effect on male fertility and reproductive capacity

RESUMO

Tracheostomy is one of the most common surgical procedures. It is considered as a life saving measure that should be performed immediately once a patient's airway shows obstruction. In Oral and Maxillofacial surgery [OMFS], it was found that tracheostomy is needed in various situations. A total number of 252 OMFS patients that were treated in two hospitals from the year 2001 to 2003 were reviewed for airway problems that needed tracheostomy. Out of that number, four cases had tracheostomy. Two of those four patients had emergency tracheostomy; one patient had pan-facial fracture, and the other one had a temporomandibular joint [TMJ] ankylosis. The other two patients had elective tracheostomy and both had TMJ ankylosis. The results of this study showed that there are certain situations in which tracheostomy should be considered as an elective surgical procedure that of a great value to some OMFS patients
