RESUMO

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential effect of environmental exposure to toxic metal [cadmium] on pregnancy outcome and fetal growth. 330 normal pregnant women were randomly selected from vali-e-asr hospital, from July 2003 through Feb. 2005. Cadmium was measured in umbilical cord blood and mother whole blood of postpartum women without occupational exposure to metals in Tehran, Iran, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry Whole blood cadmium and cord blood cadmium ranged from 0/00 to 6/30 micro g/L, respectivly. in the group higher level of maternal blood cadmium [>0.40 micro g/L] 1cm decrease was seen in neonatal birth height. [p=0.007] There was a significant association between cadmium exposure and birth weight.Mann-whitney test showed that, maternal blood cadmium level, was significantly negatively associated with neonatal birth weight [z=-1.83, P<0.06]. It was concluded that environmental exposure to cadmium significantly reduces neonatal birth height

RESUMO

To determine the effect of continuous acupressure at P6.applied by Sea-Bands with acupressure buttons on the frequency and severity of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy during the 8-20 weeks. A two-group quasi-experimental posttest-only and posttest-repeated measure in seventeen medical clinics or offices in southern Tehran was carried out. A convenience sample of Persian-speaking; healthily pregnant women in their 8-20 weeks of pregnancy; who had at least one episode of nausea, vomiting, or both before their prenatal clinic/ office visit where they were recruited. The women were randomly assigned to treatment or placebo groups. Treatment group [1] applied Sea-Bands with acupressure buttons to both wrists for 4 days and removed the Sea-Bands for 3 subsequent days. Placebo group [2] applied the Sea-Bands with out acupressure buttons to both wrists on the same time schedule as group 1. Self-reported daily diaries of the number of times per day that participants experienced nausea, the severity of nausea, the number of vomiting episodes per day, and the severity of vomiting were recorded. Mann-Whitney U test revealed that the treatment group had significantly less frequency and severity of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy while wearing the Sea-Bands than did the placebo group. The treatment group also had significantly less frequency and severity of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy while wearing the Sea-Bands than when not wearing the Sea-Bands. Sea-Bands with acupressure buttons are a noninvasive, inexpensive, safe, and effective treatment for the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy

RESUMO

Infertility leads to sexual dissatisfaction in women who believe that their inability to conceive have serious negative effects on their life, particularly their sexual relations. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of counseling on sexual satisfaction among infertile women referred to Tehran Fertility Center. It is a controlled clinical trial. One hundred infertile women were recruited in the study using convenience sampling method. Then they were randomly allocated in case and control groups. Data were gathered in two phases: before the intervention and 3 month after the intervention. The intervention group participated in two-hour counseling sessions for about 2 weeks. Data were collected using a 2-sectioned questionnaire; including demographic characteristics, and sexual satisfaction questions. Data were analyzed using X[2], Mann Whitney U, and Willcoxon statistical tests. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between two groups in sexual satisfaction before the intervention [P = 0.401]. There was significant difference between two groups 3 months after the intervention [P = 0.019]. Also, there was significant difference between women's sexual satisfaction in the counseling group before and 3 month after the intervention [P = 0.002]. Sexual counseling improves sexual satisfaction of infertile women

RESUMO

Cerebral metastases from choriocarcinoma are poor prognostic indicator of outcome in both the World Health Organization and FIGO classification systems. Although gestational trophoblastic neoplasia has become the most curable gynecological malignancy, failure rate among 'high-risk' patients is still high despite the use of aggressive multidrug regimens. A 27 year old woman [G4P2Ab1] presented with hemiplegia due to brain metastases of choriocarcinoma one year after spontaneous abortion. She underwent craniotomy and was treated with nine courses of multiple agent etoposide, methotrexate, actinomycin-etoposide and cisplatinum [EMA-EP] regimen combined with whole brain irradiation. She delivered a term healthy child two years after termination of treatment. Multiagent EMA-EP chemotherapy and whole brain irradiation with craniotomy in selected patients preserves fertility and may improve a patient overall prognosis
