RESUMO

AIM:To investigate the myopia of junior high school students in Enshi, Hubei province with different selenium content, and analyze the correlation between the level of serum selenium, hair selenium and myopia.METHODS:A cross-sectional study. A total of 600 students from grades 1-3 of junior high schools(100 students in each grade)in selenium-rich(selenium in soil ≥1.28mg/kg)and selenium-deficient(selenium in soil <1.28mg/kg)areas were randomly selected from September 2020 to September 2021, respectively. The level of serum selenium, hair selenium, glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)and myopia condition were determined.RESULTS:The serum and hair selenium of myopic group(n=244, 40.7%)were 75.14±11.16μg/L and 0.51±0.01μg/g, respectively. Those in the non-myopic group(n=356, 59.3%)were 110.24±12.14μg/L and 0.68±0.02 μg/g, respectively. The serum selenium and hair selenium in the two groups were different(all P<0.01). The serum selenium of 300 students in the selenium-deficient area was 76.74±11.25μg/L, the hair selenium was 0.45±0.01 μg/g, and the number of myopia cases was 154(51.3%); The serum selenium of 300 students in selenium-rich areas was 102.31±10.26 μg/L, the hair selenium was 0.71±0.02 μg/g, and the number of myopia cases was 90(30.0%), the serum and hair selenium in the selenium-rich areas were significantly higher than those compared with the students in selenium-deficient areas, and the myopic incidence was significantly reduced(all P<0.01). The level of GSH-Px of the two areas was 114.65±12.12U/L vs 75.34±13.20U/L(Z=37.994, P<0.01). There is a negative correlation between serum and hair selenium and the myopic incidence(r=-0.542, -0.621, P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Serum and hair selenium is significantly associated with myopia of junior high school students in Enshi, which may provide new ideas for the clinical prevention and treatment of myopia.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the factors associated with the occurrence of transplant renal artery stenosis (TRAS).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A retrospective analysis was conducted in 26 recipients who developed TRAS and 40 concurrent renal recipients without TRAS. We also conducted a nested case-control study in 14 patients with TRAS (TRAS-SD group) and another 14 non-TRAS recipients who received the allograft from the same donor (non-TRAS-SD group).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with those in the concurrent recipients without TRAS, acute rejection (AR) occurred at a significantly higher incidence (P=0.004) and the warm ischemia time (WIT) was significantly longer (P=0.015) and the level of high?density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL--C) significantly lower (P=0.009) in the recipients with TRAS. Logistic regression analysis suggested that AR (P=0.007) and prolonged WIT (P=0.046) were risk factors of TRAS while HDL-C (P=0.022) was the protective factor against TRAS. In recent years early diagnosis of TRAS had been made in increasing cases, the interval from transplantation to TRAS diagnosis became shortened steadily, and the recipients tended to have higher estimated glomerular filtration rate at the time of TRAS diagnosis.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Apart from the surgical technique, AR and prolonged WIT are also risk factors of TRAS while a high HDL-C level is the protective factor against TRAS. The improvement of the diagnostic accuracy by ultrasound is the primary factor contributing to the increased rate of early TRAS diagnosis in recent years.</p>

RESUMO

Objective To observe the effects of perfusion of the gastrodin in abdominal aorta for alleviating the spinal cord ischemia reperfusion injury (SCIRI). Methods A total of 36 New Zealand white rabbits were divided randomly into sham-operated group (group S), control group (group C) and gastrodin group (group G), 12 rabbits for each group. Aorta abdominalis infrarenalis blocking method was applied to establish the SCIRI model. The changes of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) before the ischemia and on 30 min, 60 min, 6 h, 12 h and 24 h of reperfusion of the gastrodin were respectively recorded, and the neurologic function score before the ischemia, on the 6 h, 12 h and 24 h of the reperfusion of the gastrodin were assessed. And the changes of the concentration of serum neuron specific enolase (NSE), interleukin (IL)-lβ and IL-8 were measured before the ischemia, after 45 min of ischemia, and on 30 min, 60 min, 6 h, 12 h and 24 h of reperfusion of gastrodin. Then the levels of spinal cord nerve cells mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (SOD), reactive oxygen species (ROS), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and mitochondrial swelling degree (MSD) were tested and the histopathologic changes in spinal cord tissues were observed. Results The levels of the NSE, IL-lβ, IL-8, ROS, MDA and MSD of group C were all significantly elevated after the ischemia (P < 0.01); the levels of the spinal nerve cell mitochondria SOD, GSH-PX and T-AOC were all significantly reduced (P < 0.01), MEPs and spinal cord tissue pathology were damaged significantly (P < 0.01). The rate of motor neuron abnormalities and the damages of spinal cord tissue pathology of group G were significantly milder than those of group C (P < 0.01); the levels of NSE, IL-lβ, IL-8, ROS, MDA and MSD were significantly lower than those of group C (P < 0.01), but the levels of SOD, GSH-PX and T-AOC were all significantly higher than those of group C (P < 0.01), and the recovery of neurologic function score during the reperfusion of gastrodin was significantly faster than group C (P < 0.01). Conclusions Perfusion of the gastrodin in abdominal aorta can alleviate the spinal cord ischemia reperfusion injury by promoting the mitochondrial antioxidant capacity and inhibiting the inflammatory reaction.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the clinical significance of serum matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), and monocyte CD147 in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients of damp-heat Bi-syndrome (DHBS) and of cold-damp Bi-syndrome (CDBS).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The clinical data of 22 patients from inpatients and outpatients with RA were collected, and their peripheral blood was withdrawal. The disease activity scores [DAS28(4)] were assessed. The serum levels of MMP-3 and TIMP-1 were detected by double antibody sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) and the expression percentage of CD147 on CD14+ monocytes were detected by flow cytometry. The difference of each index between RA patients of DHBS and RA patients of CDBS was analyzed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The level of serum MMP-3 and the MFI of CD147 on the monocyte surface were obviously higher in RA patients of DHBS than in those of CDBS and the normal control group (P < 0.05). The concentration of serum TIMP-1 was obviously higher in RA patients of DHBS than in those of the normal control group (P < 0.05), while there was no statistical difference between the two syndrome types. The percentage of CD147 expression was obviously lower in DHBS than in those of CDBS and the normal control group (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Increased serum MMP-3 level of RA patients of DHBS might result in destroy of joint cartilages and sclerotin. The significant increase of MFI and decreased expression percentage of monocyte CD147 might be the results of increased disease activity of RA and monocyte migration to the synovial membrane tissue.</p>

RESUMO

Background and Aim: To compare the prevalence of extra-esophageal cancers in patients diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) with SEER database. Methods: Patients with BE and EAC are part of a NIH supported Familial Barrett’s investigation involving personal and family history and pathology correlation recorded in the database. Data pertaining to extra-esophageal cancers in the proband was extracted into an excel datasheet for analysis. Expected prevalence obtained from SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results) NIH database (1973-2006) for the general population, matched for age, was compared with our cohort. Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Results: There were 1091 probands in the database of whom 876 had complete personal history. The mean age was 57.6 (5-84 years) with 807 Caucasians and 710 males. Overall incidence of extra-esophageal cancers was higher in our cohort when compared with the general population. Conclusion: There is a strong association of certain cancer types in patients with BE and EAC. However, further epidemiologic and genetic research is needed for investigation and development of genetic fingerprints

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate a method for quantitative differential diagnosis of damp-heat and cold-damp impeding syndrome of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Chinese medicine (CM).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Laboratory parameters were collected from 306 patients with RA. The clinical symptoms and laboratory parameters were compared between patients with these two syndromes (158 with RA of damp-heat impeding syndrome, and 148 with RA of cold-damp impeding syndrome), and a regression equation was established to facilitate discrimination of the two RA syndromes.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There were significant differences in disease activity score in 28 joints [DAS28 (4)], erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), platelet count (PLT), albumin (ALB) and globulin (GLB) between the two syndrome of RA (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the parameters ESR, WBC, CRP, joint pyrexia, joint cold, thirst, sweating, aversion to wind and cold, and cold extremities were statistically useful to discriminate damp-heat from cold-damp impeding syndrome. The regression equation was as follows: P=1/{1+exp[-(3.0-0.021X (1)-0.196X (2)-0.163X (3)-1.559X (4)+1.504X (5)-0.927X (6)-1.039X (7)+1.070X (8)+1.330X (9))]}. The independent variables X (1)-X (9) were ESR, WBC, CRP, hot joint, cold joint, thirst, sweating, aversion to wind and cold, and cold limbs. A P value > 0.5 signified cold-damp impeding syndrome, and a P value < 0.5 signified damp-heat impeding syndrome. The accuracy was 90.2%.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The regression equation may be useful for discriminating damp-heat from cold-damp impeding syndrome of RA.</p>

Objective To determine the normal range of minimal erythema dose (MED) for ultraviolet A (UVA) and B (UVB) in volunteers from Urumqi region. Methods One hundred and twenty-seven volunteers including healthy subjects and patients with noninflammatory skin disorders were enrolled in this study.SUV-1000 type UV simulator was used as the light source to determine MED of UVA and UVB in these subjects. Results These subjects included 48 persons with Fitzpatrick skin type Ⅲ,79 with Fitzpatrick skin type Ⅳ,51 males and 76 females. The median MED value for UVA and UVB was 38.1 J/cm2 and 31.8 mJ/cm2 respectively in subjects with skin type Ⅲ,59.16 J/cm2 and 48.00 mJ/cm2 respectively in subjects with skin type Ⅳ.Significantly lower median MED values of UVA (both P < 0.01) and UVB (both P < 0.05) were observed in the male and female subjects with skin type Ⅲ compared with those with skin type Ⅳ.The male subjects showed a significantly higher median UVA-MED value (59.16 J/cm2 vs.41.10 J/cm2,P < 0.05),but a similar UVB-MED value (39.60 mJ/cm2 vs.35.55 mJ/cm2,P > 0.05) compared with the female subjects. No significant difference was observed in the median value of UVA-or UVB-MED in subjects with skin type Ⅲ or Ⅳ between Han and Uygur nationality (all P > 0.05).Also,no correlation was found in the median value of UVA-or UVB-MED with age or duration of outdoor exposure in the male or female subjects (all P > 0.05).The lower reference limit was 33.38 J/cm2 for UVA-MED and 27.90 mJ/cm2 for UVB-MED in the population in Urumqi region. Conclusion Skin phototype may be an important determinant of MED.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the effect of temperature on the partition coefficient of isoflurane and sevoflurane in perflurocarbonate emulsion (Oxygent(TM)).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The partition coefficients of isoflurane and sevoflurane in perflurocarbonate emulsion (Oxygent(TM)) were measured at different temperatures (4, 22, 27, 32 and 37 degrees celsius;) using syringe-flask double headspace equilibration technique with gas chromatography, and the relationship between the partition coefficients and the temperature was analyzed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>At 4, 22, 27, 32 and 37 degrees celsius;, the partition coefficients of isoflurane in Oxygent(TM) were 85.30∓5.60, 40.48∓1.09, 37.14∓3.64, 27.38∓2.28 and 24.66∓1.03, and those of sevoflurane were 91.54∓5.40, 42.50∓0.91, 37.21∓2.76, 25.43∓1.03 and 28.05∓1.74, respectively. The partition coefficients of sevoflurane at 4, 22 and 37 degrees celsius; were significantly higher than those of isoflurane (P<0.05). The regression equations between the partition coefficient and temperature for isoflurane and sevoflurane were Y=-1.893X+89.20 (R(2)=0.942) and Y=-2.075X+95.58 (R(2)=0.951), respectively. An inverse linear relationship was found between temperature and the partition coefficient.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Within a specified range of temperatures, the partition coefficients isoflurane and sevoflurane decrease as the temperature increases. Sevoflurane shows a high solubility in Oxygent(TM) as compared to isoflurane.</p>
