RESUMO

Background: Doxorubicin [Dox] is an effective anthracycline anticancer drug, although it's clinical efficacy is restricted because of several acute and chronic side effects such as cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the cardioprotective effects of quercetin on doxorubicin induced toxicity in male rats

Materials and methods: This experimental study was done on 30 Wistar rats, which divided into five groups [6 rats in each group]. One control group was treated with saline [1 mL/kg], while the second control group [quercetin vehicle] received DMSO [1 mL/kg] for 14 days. Experimental groups were orally treated with quercetin every day at a dosage of 20 mg/kg, doxorubicin [25 mg/kg, i.p.] on 12th, 13th and 14th days of the experiment, as well as, with the combination of doxorubicin and Quercetin in stated doses. The treatment period lasted for 14 days. Body weight and histological preparations of heart samples of treated animals were examined on 15th day

Results: Body weight animals treated with doxorubicin significantly decreased compared to other groups [p<0.05]. Quercetin was able to prevent weight loss caused by doxorubicin. Histopathological findings revealed that pretreatment by quercetin had protective efficacy against doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity

Conclusion: According to pathological results, we confirmed that quercetin possess hepatoprotective effect against doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity which may be through its antioxidant activity

RESUMO

Background: Menopause is a natural event in which different degrees of psychosomatic changes occur. The social, demographic and behavioral factors in different nations have a significant effect on symptoms of menopause. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the personal, demographic, social and reproductive factors with symptoms of menopause and the frequency of the mental and physical symptoms of menopause among women in Tabriz, Northwest of Iran

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the clinics and health centers of Tabriz, East Azerbaijan and Iran. A total of 300 women aged 40-60 years filled a questionnaire on the socio demographic variables, reproductive history and symptoms checklist

Results: Among the symptoms, muscle and joint pain [68.7%], and increased facial hair [20.5%] were the most and the least common ones respectively. According to participants, as age increases, the symptoms worsen [p=0.003]. The frequency of the symptoms of the employed women was less than those of retired ones and housewives [p=0.001]. The physical and mental symptoms had negative relation with educational status [p<0.05]. An increase in the number of the children, the history of the oral contraceptive use and dysmenorrhea had positive relation with the frequency of the symptoms

Conclusion: The quality of life of the women during menopause worsens with an increase in age and number of children, whereas it improves with higher educational levels and employment

RESUMO

Chest X-ray [CXR] is the simplest diagnostic tool of Community Acquired Pneumonia [CAP], but it has some limitation. Therefore, the aim of this study is comparing the diagnostic accuracy of CXR and chest ultra-sonography [CUS] in detection of CAP. In the present study, a consecutive sample of suspected patients with CAP was underwent CUS, CXR, and chest computed tomography [CT] scan. Diagnostic accuracy of CUS and CXR was assessed by calculating the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and likelihood ratios using SPSS 20 statistical software. 30 patients with CAP were enrolled [93.3% male with mean age of 63.8 +/- 18.3 years]. Sensitivity of CUS and CXR in detection of CAP were 100.0% [95% Cl: 85.4-100.0] and 93.1% [95% Cl: 75.8-98.8], respectively. Specificity of CXR was 0.0 [95% Cl: 0.0-94.5], while the CUS specificity was not calculable. Findings of the present study demonstrated on the higher diagnostic accuracy of CUS versus CXR in detection of pneumonia

RESUMO

Objective: To determine the patterns, complications and casualties of road traffic accidents in North West of Iran during 2013 New Year holidays

Methods: One hundred and eighty one patients with trauma-related vehicle crashes were investigated in a cross sectional-descriptive study. We only included those road traffic accidents which were recorded during the 2013 Iranian New Year holidays. Severity of injury based on Glasgow Coma Scale [GCS] score, patient transmission type, damaged organ and the final diagnosis was determined. The mortality rate as well as complications were also recorded and reported. The pattern was analyzed and presented using descriptive statistics

Results: Overall we included 181 patients who were victims of road traffic accidents during the study period. Most cases of multiple traumas were from two car accident [49.2%]. Of 181 cases, 71 [39.2%], 66 [36.5%], 16 [8.8%] and 11 [6.1%] subjects had limb, head and neck, abdominal, and spinal cord injuries respectively, while 16 cases [8.8%] did not have any organ damage. In final diagnosis, a limb fracture was noticed in 32 cases [17.7%] and skull fractures in 5 subjects [2.8%] as the first and second causes

Conclusion: As head and neck were the most damaged organs after the limbs in patients with multiple traumas, it seems that there is a necessity for these patients in transmission and examination of head traumas. So there is a need for a proper referral system

RESUMO

More than 40,000 species of spiders have been identified in the world. Spider bites is a common problem among people, however few of them are harmful but delay in treatment can cause death. Since the spider bites are risk full to human, they should be taken seriously, especially in endemic areas. Our objective in this review was to study about poisonous spiders and find out treatments of them. Therefore, we collected related articles from PubMed database and Google Scholar. Three important syndromes caused by spider bites are loxoscelism, latrodectism and funnel web spider syndrome. Many treatments are used but much more studies should have done to decrease the mortality. In this review, we describes different venomous spiders according to their appearance, symptoms after their bites and available treatments

RESUMO

Shock as an inadequate tissue perfusion is one of the frequent causes of death in trauma patients. In this context, there are various reasons for hemodynamic instability and shock including hypovolemic [hemorrhagic], obstructive [cardiac tamponade, tension pneumothorax], cardiogenic, neurogenic, and rarely septic. In the present report, a 30-year-old trauma patient with full clinical signs and symptoms of shock referred while had unknown origin; it was finally recognized as anaphylactic shock
