RESUMO
The cardiotomy reservoir used during cardiopulmonary bypass has been studied to be used as a collection and autotransfusion device for the shed blood from the chest tubes in the postoperative period for sixteen patients undergoing open heart surgery. To assess the value of this blood, the average amount was 600 + 150.6 ml with mean hematocrit value 28.2 + 2.1, and the assessment for safety was done by coagulation studies and bacterial cultures. The shed blood was found safe to be reinfused to patients without the use of anticoagulants. The technique was found safe and valuable to be recommended in every case
