Ocular allergy, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, is an immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity reaction of the eye triggered by airborne allergens, primarily house dust mites and grass pollen. Symptoms usually consist of ocular or periocular itching, watery eyes, and red eyes that may be present year-round or seasonally. Ocular allergy has a high frequency, is underdiagnosed, and can be debilitating for the patient. It is potentially harmful to vision in cases of severe corneal scarring, and in most patients, it is associated with other allergic conditions, especially rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. It is classified as perennial allergic conjunctivitis, seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Diagnosis seeks to identify the etiologic agent, and confirmation is given by conjunctival provocation testing. Treatment is based on avoiding contact with triggers, lubrication, topical antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, immunosuppressants, and specific immunotherapy with the aim of achieving control and preventing disease complications.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial behavior of polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPy-NPs) in water against biofilm producer or not S. aureus isolated from cows and goats with mastitis. One hundred and thirty-eight isolates of S. aureus were initially evaluated for biofilm formation by spectrophotometry in microplates. In addition, the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of PPy-NPs in water for planktonic S. aureus were determined. From the bovine samples analyzed, 5 (4.46%) S. aureus isolates showed a strong biofilm production, 17 (15.18%) moderate production, 36 (32.14%) with weak production and 54 (48.21%) did not produce biofilms. Strains from goats (26) showed no biofilm production in 18 (69.23%) strains and weak biofilm production in 8 (30.76%) strains. The MIC and MBC of S. aureus to PPy-NPs were found in the same concentration (125搭/mL) in all strains tested, regardless of biofilm production or not. This finding provides a new insight into the interaction between PPy-NPs and S. aureus, and will offer potential benefits for the control of mastitis.(AU)

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the predictive power of estimating the dry matter intake (DMI) of crossbred cows on tropical pastures by the National Research Council (NRC) equation for dairy cattle. A joint analysis of five studies covering three forages was performed in which 132 individual estimates of observed DMI obtained through Cr2O3 as a marker. DMI was also predicted from the NRC (DMIPred) software with inputs concerning animals and breeding environment of the studies used. Predicted DMIPred average values (12.7±1.6kg/d) were similar to the observed DMIObs ones (12.3±3.3kg/d). We obtained the following estimates of the evaluation of the predictive power of the model: average bias (- 0.419kg/d), coefficient of determination (0.029), Person's correlation coefficient (0.17, P= 0.051), mean square error of prediction (11,844±20,034), model efficiency factor (- 0.081), coefficient of determination (4.1032), and bias correction factor (0.767). The comparison between DMIObs and DMIPred values allowed the identification of the overestimating tendency of the predictions demonstrated by the robust regression fit of the simple linear no intercept model. Nevertheless, the model yields predictions with satisfactory accuracy, but with low precision.(AU)

RESUMO

Because of weight gain, women often discontinue hormonal contraception, especially depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of studies describing dietary intake or eating behavior in DMPA users to understand whether the use of DMPA is associated with changes in dietary habits and behaviors leading to weight gain. We searched the PubMed, POPLINE, CENTRAL Cochrane, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases for reports published in English between 1980 and 2017 examining dietary intake or eating behavior in healthy women in reproductive age and adolescents using DMPA (150 mg/mL). Of the 749 publications screened, we excluded 742 due to duplicates (96), not addressing the key research question (638), not reporting dietary intake data (4), and not evaluating the relationship of body weight and dietary or eating behaviors (4). We identified seven relevant studies, including one randomized placebo-controlled trial, one non-randomized paired clinical trial, and five cohort studies. The randomized trial found no association and the other reports were inconsistent. Findings varied from no change in dietary intake or eating behavior with DMPA use to increased appetite in the first six months of DMPA use. Few studies report dietary intake and eating behavior in DMPA users and the available data are insufficient to conclude whether DMPA use is associated with changes in dietary habits or behavior leading to weight gain.

Allergic dermatitis to ectoparasite bites is a common parasitic disease among domestic animals, being reported mainly in small ruminants and companion animals. However, the disease is poorly diagnosed in equine clinics due to nosological similarities with other skin diseases. The aim of this case report was to describe the clinical syndrome, the diagnostic plan and the therapeutic management of a mule affected by this disease. An 8-year-old mule was observed at Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, presenting papular-crusted and pruritic cutaneous lesions with clinical evolution of two years. In three previous situations, the disease had been treated as fungal dermatitis by other veterinarians. For the diagnosis, cytopathological and parasitological examination of the skin, bacteriological and fungal culture, histopathological analysis and blood count were performed. The exams showed a chronic eosinophilic perivascular superficial dermatitis. A topical therapy with dimethyl sulfoxide, sulfadiazine, urea, and vitamin A was indicated. The therapeutic protocol was satisfactory, allowing complete remission of the clinical condition. This work reported clinical and pathological findings of allergic dermatitis to the bites of Culicoides spp. in muar, in addition to alerting about the importance of complementary examinations for the accomplishment of the differential diagnosis and adequate therapeutic orientation.(AU)

RESUMO

A simple, accurate and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed, validated and applied to the determination of either theophylline or paracetamol in milk-based samples. The method allowed drug quantification in fresh and powdered milk with a relatively short run time of analysis and it was also successfully applied to the quantification of the drugs in solid dosage forms intended for pediatric use. Moreover, the main significant advantages over other published works are the simplicity of the sample preparation, reduced assay time and sample loss. The method meets the International Conference on Harmonization guideline for analytical methods validation regarding specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, specificity and robustness as required by health authorities and applied by industry while designing and marketing new drug products. The technique encompasses the separation of the analytes with a reverse phase C18column under isocratic conditions and UV detection at 272 nm and 243 nm,respectively, for theophylline and paracetamol. The lower limit of quantification for both drugs was determined as 0.2μg/mL and the between-batch accuracy was 99.7%.This HPLC method allows quantification of theophylline and paracetamol in milk matrices and it can be applied in the design, development and production of milk-based pediatric dosage forms.

Employing the method of least squares and quadratic B-spline polynomials, different statistical models were tested to identify the most appropriate to model the mean trajectories of live weight and carcass yield of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Data of live weight (8,758) and carcass yield (2,042) of tilapias with ages between 106 and 245 days were obtained from 72 families derived from 36 males and 72 females. The sex and tank variables were considered as classificatory and the coefficients of quadratic polynomials B-spline of two to five intervals of the same size were used as covariables. According to most fit criteria used, the models with quadratic B-spline polynomial with five intervals of the same size presented the best adjustments. The increase in number of intervals of B-spline polynomial improved the fit of the polynomials to the data. The inclusion of classificatory effects from sex, tank, the interaction of these effects and the quadratic polynomial B-spline nested in this interaction indicated that, over time, each sex, grown in different tank, presented different mean trajectory, necessitating the inclusion of nesting time in the interaction sex x tank in order to avoid the under or overestimation of breeding values of the selection candidates in breeding programs of this species.

Allem) A.C.

ABSTRACT Swine production is a well-established livestock activity in Brazil. On the other hand, the Neonatal Colibacillosis, whose pathogen is Escherichiacoli, can decrease the productivity on farms and cause losses to producers. The treatment of the disease is based on the use of antimicrobial drugs. However, the free use of these substances has led to the selection of resistant strains. Thus, the search for alternative therapies such as medicinal plants has become becoming increasingly common. In this context, we aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts of five plants from the caatinga biome: A. cearensis (Fr. Allem) AC Smith, Encholirium spectabile Mart, Hymenaea courbaril L, Neoglaziovia variegata Mez and Selaginella convoluta Spring in face of isolates of Eschericha coli collected from pigs. For the in vitro susceptibility testing, the method of Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was chosen The extracts showed antimicrobial activity in the following averages 138.75 175.28, 128.36, 127.71 and 129.33 mg / mL, respectively. This antibacterial activity could be related to the action of secondary metabolites in the extracts of these plants. Thus, the current study can contribute to the development of alternative therapies for the treatment of infections such as swine Colibacillosis Neonatal, as well as to the knowledge of Caatinga medicinal plants.

RESUMO

The composition of the diets of 66 species of fishes was investigated from September 2009 to June 2010 in three subsystems of the Upper Paraná River floodplain (Brazil), following invasion by the two mollusk species Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) and Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774), and the macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle. Limnoperna fortunei was consumed in all three subsystems and occurred in the diet of 15 fish species, with a high proportion in the diet of Leporinus obtusidens. Corbicula flumineawas present in the diet of Pterodoras granulosus caught in the Paraná and Ivinheima subsystems. Hydrilla verticillataoccurred in the diet of Schizodon nasutus caught in the Ivinheima and Paraná subsystems. It is not yet possible to evaluate the potential of these species to control invasive mollusks in the study area or the impact of these species on the structure of the food chain. Omnivorous and herbivorous fishes in the study area may have little impact on the population of H. verticillata.

RESUMO

Introduction: Currently, two types of atlas provide anatomical studies: those with two-dimensional images, and those compiled by interactive pictures; mostly drawn virtually. In recent decades, the development of virtual anatomical atlases has been encouraged and prioritized by both the technological advances and the need to facilitate and complement medical education. The aim of this study was to develop an interactive virtual atlas of the upper limbs. Material and Methods: A systematic dissection of three upper limbs (shoulder, arm, forearm and hand) of legally preserved cadavers in Anatomy Laboratory of São José do Rio Preto Medical School, SP (FAMERP) has been carried out. Results: A website has been developed to facilitate the learning of superficial and deep structures of the limbs comprising ten pictures showing the steps and the various structures and display devices (naming demarcated structures and text with relevant information about these). In addition, the website includes a photo gallery with subtitled images of the dissected upper limbs. Conclusion: In conclusion, virtual study of Anatomy by means of interactive-image display of dissected parts can facilitate and enhance the learning of the upper limbs.(AU)

Changes in the flow and composition of saliva have been described in patients with cerebral palsy (CP), what can be considered as a risk factor that may result on the development of oral diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of changes in osmolarity and salivary flow in dental caries experience in individuals with CP. The sample consisted of 63 children with CP (GE) and 50 normoreactive children (GC) of both sexes, aged 5-16 years old. For GE group information regarding movement disorder, the clinical type of PC, use of medications, and level of Function Gross Motor Classification System (GMFCS) were obtained through medical records. Both groups were assessed for caries experience, and were recorded the total number of decayed and lost teeth for deciduous and permanent dentition (dmft and DMFT). To determine the salivary flow and osmolality the resting saliva was collected using Salivette© (Sarstedt, Nmbrecht, Germany). The EG and CG have differed significantly for variables DMFT (p <0.001), osmolality (p <0.001), and salivary flow rate (p <0.001). GE has presented higher values of DMFT and osmolarity and inferior salivary flow when compared to GC. The severity of neurological injury represented by standard clinical tetraplegia, lack of neck control, and anticonvulsants are factors that influence negatively salivary parameters and caries in individuals with CP

RESUMO

We evaluated dyspnea perception in cystic fibrosis patients compared with normal subjects, during an inspiratory resistive loading test and 6-min walk test. We also evaluated the correlation between dyspnea scores induced by resistive loads and by the 6-min walk test. In this prospective, cross-sectional study, 31 patients with cystic fibrosis (≥15 years of age) and 31 age-, gender-, and ethnicity-matched healthy volunteers (20 females and 11 males per group) underwent inspiratory resistive loading, spirometry, and the 6-min walk test. As the magnitude of the inspiratory loads increased, dyspnea scores increased (P<0.001), but there was no difference between groups in dyspnea score (P=0.654). Twenty-six (84%) normal subjects completed all the resistive loads, compared with only 12 (39%) cystic fibrosis patients (P<0.001). Dyspnea scores were higher after the 6-min walk test than at rest (P<0.001), but did not differ between groups (P=0.080). Post-6-min walk test dyspnea scores correlated significantly with dyspnea scores induced by resistive loads. We conclude that dyspnea perception induced in cystic fibrosis patients by inspiratory resistive loading and by 6-min walk test did not differ from that induced in normal subjects. However, cystic fibrosis patients discontinued inspiratory resistive loading more frequently. There were significant correlations between dyspnea perception scores induced by inspiratory resistance loading and by the 6-min walk test. This study should alert clinicians to the fact that some cystic fibrosis patients fail to discriminate dyspnea perception and could be at risk for delay in seeking medical care.

RESUMO

We studied the effects of the acute administration of small doses of lead over time on hemodynamic parameters in anesthetized rats to determine if myocardial contractility changes are dependent or not on the development of hypertension. Male Wistar rats received 320 µg/kg lead acetate iv once, and their hemodynamic parameters were measured for 2 h. Cardiac contractility was evaluated in vitro using left ventricular papillary muscles as were Na+,K+-ATPase and myosin Ca2+-ATPase activities. Lead increased left- (control: 112 ± 3.7 vs lead: 129 ± 3.2 mmHg) and right-ventricular systolic pressures (control: 28 ± 1.2 vs lead: 34 ± 1.2 mmHg) significantly without modifying heart rate. Papillary muscles were exposed to 8 µM lead acetate and evaluated 60 min later. Isometric contractions increased (control: 0.546 ± 0.07 vs lead: 0.608 ± 0.06 g/mg) and time to peak tension decreased (control: 268 ± 13 vs lead: 227 ± 5.58 ms), but relaxation time was unchanged. Post-pause potentiation was similar between groups (n = 6 per group), suggesting no change in sarcoplasmic reticulum activity, evaluated indirectly by this protocol. After 1-h exposure to lead acetate, the papillary muscles became hyperactive in response to a β-adrenergic agonist (10 µM isoproterenol). In addition, post-rest contractions decreased, suggesting a reduction in sarcolemmal calcium influx. The heart samples treated with 8 µM lead acetate presented increased Na+,K+-ATPase (approximately 140%, P < 0.05 for control vs lead) and myosin ATPase (approximately 30%, P < 0.05 for control vs lead) activity. Our results indicated that acute exposure to low lead concentrations produces direct positive inotropic and lusitropic effects on myocardial contractility and increases the right and left ventricular systolic pressure, thus potentially contributing to the early development of hypertension.

RESUMO

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to assess the knowledge regarding emergency management of tooth avulsion among elementary schoolteachers in the city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Pernambuco, Brazil. Materials and Methods: A total of 338 teachers answered a questionnaire with items on emergency procedures following tooth avulsion. Results: The majority of teachers (89.1%) had received no previous orientation regarding management of dental trauma and 81.4% had not witnessed an accident in which tooth avulsion had occurred. If an avulsed tooth had fallen to the ground, 84.3% of the teachers said they would pick it up, and 67.8% of them stated that they would clean it with water or some other liquid. A total of 33.1% said that they would take the student with the tooth in hand to a dental office. Of the respondents 88.5% would seek professional help immediately; 85.2% stated they would be unable to reimplant the avulsed tooth; and 39.3% would store the tooth in water. Conclusions: A lack of technical information was observed among teachers regarding management of tooth avulsion. Educational campaigns at schools are necessary to modify the behavior of the teachers with regard to management of tooth avulsion. Further studies should be carried out for the assessment of teachers who have participated in educational campaigns to make the treatment of dental trauma a matter of public interest.

We carried out this study to evaluate the intercurrence of tuberculosis and enzootic leukosis in dairy cattle herds in 8 districts of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, by establishing the prevalence of bovines reagent to specific diagnostic tests, and to also verify the correlation between enzootic leucosis, cattle tuberculosis, the leukocytes count and lymphocytes count among the cattle studied. A total of 662 animals were tested serologically and hematologically, by the techniques of double immunodiffusion in agarose gel and the white blood cell count with the total and differential leukocyte count, respectively, and 612 were evaluated immunoallergically by the tuberculin test. In the 15 herds examined, the prevalence of cattle that were positive to the AGID and tuberculin tests were 32.2% (213/662) and 14.1% (86/612), respectively. Analyzing the correlation between the variables total leukocytes and lymphocytes, we found that total leukocyte is highly related to the variable lymphocytes (72%). The results in this study indicated that the diseases studied are widespread in the population studied, with significant levels of growth in leukemia, and infections of bovine leukosis virus (VLB) and Mycobacterium bovis are active and growing, with risk of impairment of the health of cattle herds, and, due to the zoonotic nature of bovine tuberculosis, of the health of people who work with cattle.

The effect of the addition of dehydrated cashew apple bagasse (DCB) to the diet on ewe postpartum response was evaluated on 41 ewes, housed with their kids in pens, where they received two diets containing 75 percent of Elephant Grass plus 25 percent of concentrate (Diet I; n=17), or 50 percent of DCB plus 25 percent of Elephant Grass plus 25 percent of concentrate (Diet II; n=24). On the 50th day postpartum, estrus was synchronized and ewes mated. Diet Igroup exhibited a greater loss of live weight (P<0.05) and higher intakes of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber (P<0.001). By contrast, animals from diet II showed a significantly increase in dry matter, ether extract, and acid detergent fiber intakes (P<0.001), and lower plasmatic concentrations of cholesterol, total lipids, albumin, and total protein (P<0.001). No differences were found between groups (P>0.05) for the presence of first functionally CL, estrus synchronization response, and gestation or prolificity rates. Thus, the addition of DCB to the diet was well accepted, induced a reduction of weight loss, and did not affect the reproductive response of ewes.

RESUMO

In the present study, Apis mellifera propolis and essential oils (EOs) obtained from aromatic plants were evaluated as alternative antimicrobials. We aimed to establish the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) from Apis mellifera and of EOs from Caryophyllus aromaticus, Zingiber officinale, Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Mentha piperita against 32 Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli strains from human clinical specimens. The antimicrobials were diluted in agar and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were found whereas MIC90 percent values were calculated. Time-kill curve assays using mixtures containing one quarter of MIC90 percent for EEP with all EOs as well cinnamon EO were performed. The cinnamon EO was found to be the most efficient, with MIC90 percent values of 1.22 and 0.96 mg x mL-1 respectively against S. aureus and E. coli, whereas MIC90 percent of EEP were 1.86 and 20.12 mg x mL-1 respectively against S. aureus and E. coli. The combinations of EEP with ginger and mint EOs, and cinnamon with ginger and clove EOs, showed synergistic effects. Consequently, further studies are necessary to confirm these activities in vivo and to evaluate the phytochemical characteristics of natural products.
