RESUMO

Aim: A study was conducted to develop a new approach of non-stress baseline and evaluate different approach of determining non stress baseline for Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI).Methodology: To observe maximum and minimum canopy temperature, two plots with three replications were maintained at fully stress (no irrigation) and no stress (fully irrigated) conditions, respectively. Portable weather station with data logger was installed at the middle of field to record continuous data at half an hour interval. Gypsum block soil moisture sensor were buried at 20 cm interval up to 100 cm and connected with data logger. Infrared radiometer was used to measure canopy temperature. Results: The evaluation was based on five statistical indicators; correlation coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean bias error (MBE) and Wilmot index of agreement (d). It was found that new regression base line performed better than other existing approaches. The calculated value of RMSE, MAE, MBE, d and R2 were 0.65, 0.51, 0.02, 0.79 and 0.83, respectively, for new baseline approach. Interpretation: The newly developed multiple regression equation (incorporating three weather parameters (Rn, VPD and u) and two crop growth parameters (h and CC)) helped to reduce error in the calculation of non-stress baseline for wheat crop in humid subtropical climate

Administration of carbon tetrachloride to normal rats increased activities of hepatic 5(1)-nucleotidase, acid phosphatase, acid ribonuclease while the activities of succinate dehydrogenase, glucose 6-phosphatase, superoxide dismutase and cytochrome P450 were decreased. Levels of lipid peroxides, total lipids and cholesterol of liver were also increased. The activities of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase were increased. Other serum parameters showing changes after carbon tetrachloride were: bilirubin, proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein-X. Picroliv (from the plant Picrorhiza kurroa) in doses of 6 and 12 mg/kg provided a significant protection against most of the biochemical alterations produced by carbon tetrachloride. The degree of protection afforded by picroliv, when administered simultaneously or as a pretreatment was almost equal.

RESUMO

Administration of picroliv, a standardized fraction of alcoholic extent of Picrorhiza kurroa (3-12 mg/kg/day for two weeks) simultaneously with P. berghei infection showed significant protection against hepatic damage in Mastomys natalensis. The increased levels of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), alkaline phosphatase, lipoprotein-X (LP-X) and bilirubin in the infected animals were marked reduced by different doses of picroliv. In the liver, picroliv decreased the levels of lipid peroxides and hydroperoxides and facilitated the recovery of superoxide dismutase and glycogen. Picroliv had no effect on the degree of parasitaemia.

RESUMO

Levels of lipid peroxides in rat caecum, blood, liver and kidney and the capacity of tissue homogenates to form lipid peroxides in vitro was enhanced after caecal amoebiasis in rats produced by Entamoeba histolytica (IB-1). The activity of hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes in post-mitochondrial fraction and the cytochrome P 450 contents in microsomal fraction decreased significantly, while lysosomal enzymes such as acid phosphatase, acid ribonuclease and cathepsin Β showed an increase in the liver homogenates of infected animals. These changes were reversed following treatment with the antiamoebic drug, metronidazole.

RESUMO

A rapid method for preparation of plasma membrane from Acanthamoeba culbertsoni involving toluene treatment followed by lithium bromide extraction is described. In the plasma membrane preparation, 5'-nucleotidase, Na+ + K+ -ATPase, Mg2+ -ATPase and glucose-6-phosphatase activities were enriched. The membrane preparation was free from nucleic acid, cytochrome P-450 and cytochrome b5. Amino acid (14C-Ieucine) was not incorporated in the plasma membrane in 2 min. Succinic dehydrogenase was not detectable in the plasma membrane preparation. The molar ratio of cholesterol and phospholipids was 0·95 which is characteristics for plasma membranes. Under electronmicroscopy the preparation was homogenous without any other component of the cell. Plasma membrane proteins and glycoproteins were separated on acrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Fatty acids, cholesterol and glucose present in axenic medium are utilized by growing Entamoeba histolytica but the amoeba is unable to synthesize cholesterol from [U —14 C — ] glucose although the label is incorporated into the fatty acids and non-saponifiable fractions of the organism. Exogenously-added sonicated dispersions of cholesterol, β-sitosterol, lanosterol, lecithin and lauric, palmitic, linoleic and stearic acids are ingested by the amoebae with subsequent loss in amoeboid movement. After a few hours the movement is regained. Cholesterol, lecithin and the fatty acids stimulate amoebic multiplication but are unable to replace serum in the medium either singly or in combination.
